MMModern 0.10.1
MMModern 0.10.1
This release fixes saving after the barrier switches in the Golem Dungeon.
-
Using one of the three barrier switches on the Golem Dungeon's west wall could make every later save fail with "invalid object override value". This included saves made after leaving the dungeon and when signing in at an Inn. Saving now works, and loading such a game shows the barriers as you left them. The failed saves never damaged earlier save files.

MMModern 0.10.0
MMModern 0.10.0
This release adds the original game's other sound devices and fixes scripted containers and trap effects.
-
Music and sound now come from the devices chosen in the game's
WORLD/XEEN.CFG, as the original installer wrote them, in both the game and the intros. Besides the installed Sound Blaster Pro music, the AdLib, Sound Blaster and Pro Audio Spectrum music drivers play on an OPL2 chip, and digital sound can also come from the Sound Blaster driver. -
Roland MT-32 music plays on an emulated MT-32 when
XEEN.CFGselects it. Put your own MT-32 1.07 control ROM and PCM ROM, under any file names, in%LOCALAPPDATA%\MMModern\roms; MMModern includes no ROMs. Without them, music is silent and one notice explains why. -
The installer's other devices are not supported yet and give one notice. The game's timing is the same with every device.
-
Rubble, crates and similar containers that release monsters can now be searched only once, as in the original. Before, 58 such places in Clouds, such as the rubble in Dwarf Mine 1, could be searched again and again.
-
While a scripted event waits on its message, the view now shows what the event changed, as in the original: moved objects, summoned monsters and trap effects such as the gas in Dwarf Mine 1.
-
Requires the original World of Xeen two-CD talkie game data. The download does not include game data.
-

MMModern 0.9.5
MMModern 0.9.5
A maintenance release with fidelity fixes found while playing and auditing 0.9.0.
-
Outdoors, the red hit splash now stays in front of the monster you hit instead of being hidden behind it.
-
Poison Volley cast outside combat, or from an item, now fires one missile per active party member, as the original does with a smaller party.
-
Forward and back in combat now do nothing, as in the original, instead of showing a "not supported yet" notice.
-
At the Inn, adding or removing a character refreshes the sheet only when the change is accepted.
-
Ctrl-Q no longer quits during the title-exit fade, and keys pressed during the Clouds intro fades are kept for the next scene, as in the original.
-
Scripted events now mark a location as "executed" exactly as the original does for each event command.
-
The Clouds ending no longer sends three extra sound-mixer commands the original never sends.
-
A missing INTRO.CC or DARK.CC is now reported as missing game data, naming the file.
-

Clouds of Xeen can now be completed, with its original ending and score. This release also adds the Clouds intro and the Darkside startup intro, and improves scripted encounters and map rules.
- Requires the original World of Xeen two-CD talkie game data. The download does not include game data.
- Clouds maps are playable; Darkside gameplay is not supported yet.

MMModern 0.8.0
Saves from 0.7.x do not load in this release. The save format changed from v18 to v20. Each 0.x release keeps one save format and refuses older saves with a message, so start a new game.
What changed
- The Inn. Sign In at the Vertigo, Rivercity or Shangri-La tavern adds a day, saves the game and opens the original Inn, with its song and scrolls. Lodged characters join and leave the party. Exit saves again and puts you back at the tavern door, and a game saved at the Inn reopens there.
- Create and Delete. Create opens the original creation screen, where you roll the dice, swap attributes, pick a class and a free portrait, and name the new character. Delete removes a character for good once you confirm.
- Parties of one to six. Dismiss (D) sends a member away. Combat, spells, Events, Rest and the shops all work with one to six characters in any order.
- Events react as in DOS. On a cell with automatic Events, they run again after every key or click, so a trap hurts again with each key. Load and New Game start with that run. An Event interrupted by a monster finishes after the fight, and Run lands where the original puts you. Keys follow the original's table, and both mouse buttons do the same thing everywhere.
- Presentation. Doors show open for an instant as you walk through. A fall from the sky or the clouds plays the original drop, with its scream and landing. Moon Ray heals one member at a time, and the border lights restart when a shop opens.
- Fixes. Mr Wizard also works from the combat control panel, and an Event lock on a map's first object now opens.
Still missing: the intros, the Clouds ending and Lord Xeen's Scepter, the Pyramid, Darkside, and the title lightning sound. F8 speech replay is left out on purpose. The README has the full list.

MMModern 0.7.1
Saves from 0.7.0 load in this release. The save format is unchanged (v18).
What changed
- Fullscreen. Alt+Enter switches between the window and borderless fullscreen.
- Window size. You can resize or maximize the window, and the picture keeps its proportions. The first window opens at the largest whole multiple of 320x200 that fits the screen. The game remembers fullscreen and the window size between runs, in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\MMModern\window.ini, apart from your saves. On scaled Windows displays the picture stays sharp. - Escape no longer quits. As in the original, Escape backs out of menus and dialogs and does nothing on the main screen. Quit from the control panel, press Alt+F4 or close the window to leave the game.
Everything else plays as in 0.7.0. See the 0.7.0 notes for what this release plays and what is missing.

MMModern 0.7.0
Saves from 0.6.0 do not load in this release. The save format changed from v15 to v18. Each 0.x release keeps a single save format and refuses older saves with a message, so start a new game.
What changed
- All of Clouds opens. Every Clouds map loads from the original data: the outdoor regions, the towns, and the dungeons with their stairs and teleports. The mirror, Lloyd's Beacon, the travel spells and Town Portal (now to all five towns) work. Mountaineer and Pathfinder each need two party members, and dark maps stay black until the party has light.
- Every town works. Rivercity, Shangri-La, Nightshadow, Asp, Winterkill and both levels of Newcastle have their services, with the original prices, stock, Training caps and Guild spell lists.
- Dungeon entrances and the Arena. The Reaper, the Golem, the Dwarf Mine and the Sphinx speak, turn you away without their key and let you in with it. The Warzone Battle Master runs his fights and pays for each win.
- Monster treasure. Monsters drop the gold, gems and items of their original records, at the original treasure levels and with accessories.
- Sound. Music and sound effects play through an emulated Pro Audio Spectrum FM chip, set up as the CD version installs it. Shop and guild voices, the dungeon guardians, the dream, the death laugh, monster voices and combat hits play as digital samples, and NPCs talk with the CD speech from the GOG installation. The control panel's Efx, Music, Speech and Text buttons work and are saved with the party. With Text off and Speech on, NPCs speak their lines instead of showing them, as the original does.
- Sound problems no longer stop the game. If the sound output fails, the game goes silent, shows a message and keeps running. Unplugging headphones or changing the Windows output moves the sound to the new device.
- Run and Mr Wizard. Run works on every map, and Mr Wizard works outside combat.
- Fixes. Cursed characters hit less often, and Confused, Asleep and Paralyzed now clear every eight hours, both as in DOS. Energy Blast deals 2 to 6 times the caster's level. Shop pictures no longer cover the window frame.
Still missing: the Inn and character creation, the intros and the Clouds ending, Darkside, and a few original sounds (falls and the title lightning). F8 speech replay is left out on purpose. The README has the full list.
The zip now includes the license texts of the Vorbis and Ogg libraries built into the game.

MMModern 0.6.0
Saves from 0.5.0 load in this release. The save format is unchanged (v15).
What changed
- Items in combat. The combat Use button and Items dialog let you swap weapons and armor and use charged items, as in the original. Town Portal also works from an item (Vertigo for now).
- Quests and Awards. The Quests screen shows quest items, current quests and Auto Notes; the Awards screen lists each member's awards.
- Skill indicators. Direction Sense, Spot Secret Doors and Danger Sense light their border indicators.
- The F3 mainland comes alive. Every Event around Vertigo now runs as in the original: fountains, statues, NPCs and the other sites, besides the sign, Myra, the Phirna Roots and the well. The Dwarf Mine and Pyramid entrances still say "not supported yet", now on screen.
- Minimap and Map. Vertigo's buildings show as solid blocks, the minimap's edges are complete and the party arrow is no longer covered by walls, as in DOS.
- Fixes. An object removed by an Event shows again when another Event moves it.
Everything else plays as in 0.5.0. See the 0.1.0 notes for what this release plays and what is missing.

MMModern 0.5.0
Saves from 0.4.0 do not load. The save format changed (v15). Older slots show as "Unavailable"; start a new game.
What changed
- Every Clouds spell works. All 76 spells now work from the spell book, Quick Fight and charged items, as in the original.
- Monster control and damage. Sleep, Beast Master, Hypnotize and Dragon Sleep put monsters out of action; Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Star Burst, Finger of Death, Poison Volley and every other damage spell hit as in DOS.
- Healing and cures. Every healing and cure spell, up to Raise Dead, Resurrection and Divine Intervention. A member woken or cured in combat after their turn was skipped waits for the next round, as in the original.
- Buffs. Bless, Heroism, Holy Bonus, Power Shield and Protection from Elements change combat, with the original indicators on the border.
- Senses, items and travel. Light, Levitate, Walk on Water, Clairvoyance, Detect and Identify Monster; Enchant Item, Recharge Item and Item to Gold; Super Shelter, Etherealize, Time Distortion, Teleport, Lloyd's Beacon and Town Portal (Vertigo for now).
- Rest is refused on the cells where the original refuses it.
- Fixes. Spell rows and portrait clicks during spell prompts respond as in DOS; Temple Donation grants Clairvoyance.
Everything else plays as in 0.4.0. See the 0.1.0 notes for what this release plays and what is missing.

MMModern 0.4.0
Saves from 0.3.0 do not load. The save format changed (v14). Older slots show as "Unavailable"; start a new game.
What changed
- Terrain works as in the original. Lava burns, the sky and clouds drop the party to the land below, space kills, and the desert costs time, wherever the original applies them.
- Rest works on every surface.
- Space passes time. Pressing Space waits a turn and lets nearby monsters act, as in the original.
- More Vertigo services. The Tavern offers Drink and Tip (Rumors stays free and changes daily); the Temple offers Donation, which can bless the party, and Uncurse. Sign In at the Tavern still waits for the Inn.
Everything else plays as in 0.3.0. See the 0.1.0 notes for what this release plays and what is missing.
