My thoughts on this at the moment:

I think the support we provide should meet the Python users where they are and provide a script within {sandpaper}, which will run on ipynb files to render and convert them to the staging-area markdown. The advantage to this model is that we can additionally add scripts for other languages such as Julia.

That being said, from my experience, it IS possible to render a lesson using python via {reticulate}, which I experimented with several months ago: https://zkamvar.github.io/miniature-snake-waffle/03-matplotlib.html
