First release of the maintained fork of Simpletask, the todo.txt task manager. The original project was archived in 2023; this release gets it installing and syncing again on current Android. No new features and no UI changes.

Which APK?

  • simpletask-dropbox-…apk: syncs your todo.txt with Dropbox. Log in with Full Dropbox access (the App folder option isn't set up in these builds).
  • simpletask-cloudless-…apk: keeps todo.txt on the phone. Use a separate sync app such as Syncthing-Fork. Asks for "All files access" so it can read the file wherever your sync app puts it.

Both install alongside the original app (new package ID ca.delahousse.simpletask…), so you'll set it up once: log in and pick your todo file via ⋮ → Open todo file. The Dropbox version looks for /todo/todo.txt by default.

What's fixed

  • Installs on Android 15–17. Targets Android 17, so the system no longer blocks it as an app "built for an older version of Android".
  • Dropbox login works again. The bundled Dropbox library only offered encryption settings Dropbox's servers now refuse; updated to Dropbox SDK 7.0.0.
  • No more endless sync spinner when the todo file doesn't exist in Dropbox. The app now shows "Loading of todo file failed" instead.
  • Layout fixed for Android 15+ edge-to-edge (nothing hidden behind the status or navigation bars).
  • Asks for notification permission (Android 13+) when you pin a task to the notification bar.
  • Crash fix when adding a task with trailing spaces (from @willemw12's fork).

Under the hood

Dead build dependencies replaced, build tools updated (Gradle 9.5, AGP 9, Kotlin 2.2), and automated builds on GitHub Actions. Maintenance fixes from @chadvoegele's and @willemw12's forks were reused with credit. Full history: commits on maintenance/modernize.

Tested on a Pixel 7 running Android 17. Licensed GPL-3.0, like the original; all credit for the app goes to Mark Janssen.
