@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 09:10

This is the first public release of AgentEd: a visual Markdown editor with a metadata/frontmatter panel and live token estimates.

Write notes, project briefs, and AI instructions with familiar formatting controls. Open and save ordinary .md files in your own folders — no vault to set up, no account to create, and no built-in cloud service. AgentEd makes no network calls of its own: no telemetry, no update check, nothing sent anywhere.

AgentEd is a small desktop application for people who want to work comfortably with Markdown while keeping control of their files.

What’s included

  • Visual editing for headings, lists, checklists, links, tables, images, and code blocks.
  • A metadata panel for editing YAML frontmatter.
  • Live token estimates alongside word and character counts.
  • Local files you can use with other editors and AI tools.

See the README for the full feature list, REQUIREMENTS.md for documented behaviour and limitations, and the CHANGELOG for the release history.

Download

Choose the installer for your platform from the Assets section below.

Platform Installer Status
Windows x64 AgentEd_1.0.0_x64-setup.exe Release
macOS, Apple Silicon AgentEd_1.0.0_aarch64.dmg Release
Linux x86-64 AgentEd_1.0.0_amd64.deb Experimental

Windows is the primary development and testing platform. The macOS release is for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later) and has been tested on a single Mac running macOS 26.6 and 27. Intel-based Macs are not supported by this build.

The Linux package is experimental and has been tested on Ubuntu 24.04 with GNOME and Wayland.

The Windows installer is under 5 MB. This refers to the installer download, not the total installed footprint or any required runtime.

Installation

These installers are not yet digitally signed, and the macOS app is not notarized by Apple. You may encounter a security warning when installing or first opening AgentEd.

Download only from this repository’s releases. The illustrated installation guide explains the expected warnings and when to stop.

Windows

Run AgentEd_1.0.0_x64-setup.exe.

If SmartScreen displays Windows protected your PC, confirm that you downloaded the installer from this release. If you trust the download, choose More info → Run anyway.

This option may be unavailable on managed computers or under some Windows security settings.

macOS

  1. Open the .dmg and drag AgentEd into Applications. Launch it from Applications, not from the disk image.
  2. macOS displays “AgentEd” Not Opened because it cannot verify the developer. Dismiss the dialog with Done.
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security. Under Security, find the message about AgentEd and select Open Anyway. The button is offered for about an hour after the attempt.
  4. In the dialog that follows, select Open Anyway again and authenticate when prompted. The highlighted button is Move to Trash (Move to Bin in British English), which deletes the application — do not choose it.

After approval, this copy of AgentEd opens without repeating these steps. Any new installation asks again, a reinstall of the same build included, with the same steps.

These steps apply to the unverified-app warning, not to a warning that identifies malware or says the app will damage your computer.

Linux

From the folder containing the downloaded package, run:

sudo apt install ./AgentEd_1.0.0_amd64.deb

The package requires glibc 2.34 or later and WebKitGTK 4.1. APT checks the declared dependencies and installs them when available from your configured repositories.

Verify your download

Each installer has a corresponding .sha256 file, and SHA256SUMS.txt lists all installer checksums.

Run the appropriate command in your download folder:

Windows — PowerShell

Get-FileHash .\AgentEd_1.0.0_x64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256

macOS — Terminal

shasum -a 256 AgentEd_1.0.0_aarch64.dmg

Linux — Terminal

sha256sum AgentEd_1.0.0_amd64.deb

Compare the result with the corresponding published checksum. A match confirms that your file matches the published checksum; it does not by itself establish that the software is safe.
