Agree on a format for a 'Metrics Toolkit' that makes application of metrics easier for people/projects. #252

Hi Emma, Thank you for prototyping your idea. Is this something you are suggesting for the GitHub repository we work in or for the released metrics on our website? Best, |
Website (or additional digital asset that has an beautiful UI like Github pages). Happy to come on a call to discuss more - I just wanted to propose in an issue first, based on some challenges explaining this project, and its impact on OSS externally. |
Thanks! I'm tagging @klumb because he can help us understand what is technically possible with our website platform. |
The focus of this (for me) is to make sure we have activities that are easy to a) understand, b) implement and c) contribute back to . The presentation of those activities (whether it's a website etc) is secondary in my mind. For example. This mockup: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/60618/71565556-84b87a00-2a64-11ea-8be2-78dd7c4ea5a3.png ), lets people understand that there are (currently) two ways to evaluate inclusive leadership in their project. One is 'first aid' meaning, quick review, high risk issues identified in a short period of time. and the other is a deep-dive, that might require tools, and closer focus, requiring more time and potentially resource/cost. The second mockup, shows what that user would see if they selected the 'first aid' version (which is most likely for newcomers), and details how you actually apply metrics in a way that sets up for success. I believe, that something like this can make the metrics more accessible, in ways that are actionable, and that people can report back - that we get real stories about how metrics improved projects 'out in the wild' . Before we would get to 'website' we would need to agree on what those activities are. I am interested in building it out for leadership as a prototype for others. |
I like it but @GeorgLink, I don't think this is a manageable release structure. The reason being, that all working groups would need to match the style and each release gets larger making it quite difficult to manage. But it doesn't have to be part of the release. I think the way @emmairwin is describing it, is as a tool to explore and present D&I metrics. It would be easy to build the model she describes on the website. I could see it existing on an "applications" navigation dropdown along with Augur and Grimoire Lab. Happy to continue the discussion and to help implement any form of this. |
As an update, I am going to set a objective/goal for this first half of the year to publish a series of activities based on metrics, that anyone can use on their open source project (think First Aid). |
Awesome!!

Most likely governance, leadership, code of conduct enforcement, and
recognition. But I'll update here as those are published (likely starting
early February)

This!! This is the template that I think we should use when reflecting on D&I in the CHAOSS project. |
@germonprez @emmairwin is it ok to close this issue? I feel like we are addressing this idea in several other places in the CHAOSS project, but I'd like to get your 👍 |
Yes!

This came up in discussion in our DEI working group meeting today. Somewhat related, I am working on capturing open source best practices into a toolkit-like format with my work at UNICEF. You can find the knowledge-base/toolkit on GitHub Pages, and there is an open source website theme that sort of resembles the wireframes pictured in this issue. |
There is a lot of great work in this repo, but I am finding that it's still a challenge for people to apply these in their projects/communities. As a result, I think it's hard for us to talk about the impact we're having.
Keeping in mind that I am horrible at design, I played around with what I think would be helpful to people navigating the opportunity of applying metrics, without needing to understand a lot up front. (loosely based on https://toolkit.mozilla.org/methods/).
A easy Main Page UI that describes focus areas (high level).
Those drill down to focus area - goals(I think they are called)
Which drill down again to 'types' of activities which can be hard, or easy
Finally ending up with one direct way off applying metrics.
For conversation anyway....
PS- @germonprez this is what I was trying to describe in email.
