v0.4.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 20:15

0.4.1

  • Hover a tab for its full title and its panes' program status
  • Right-click a pasted image to open it in a pane beside its terminal
  • File tabs show Edit / Diff only when there is a choice
  • macOS: the keyboard no longer gets stuck in a browser page
  • Updating ends running shells: the daemon restarts

Fixes

  • Hovering a tab shows its full title and, when programs report status, the state its panes most need you for and each pane's records. Before, only the small status glyph had a tooltip.
  • A pasted or dropped image's card has a right-click menu: Open, Open in pane beside (the image in a Files pane split beside the terminal), Copy path and Dismiss. A click still opens it over the window.
  • The Edit / Diff switch on a file tab shows only when it offers a choice: Diff for a file with uncommitted changes, Read or View for Markdown and SVG. Images, PDFs and media read View instead of Edit.
  • compi edit FILE --pane on a Files pane opens the file in that pane, as documented, instead of splitting a new pane or saying the pane is too small.
  • macOS: the keyboard no longer stays in a browser page once you use another pane, and closing a page that had the keyboard gives it back to the window.
  • A link pasted into the browser's address field or given to compi browse loses text around it, such as quotes, <…>, a Markdown link, a dev server's Local: line or a trailing period. compi browse without a URL opens a blank pane with the keyboard in its address field.

Updating

  • Running shells end. The update restarts the local daemon after you consent. Daemon protocol 34 and workspace format 8 are unchanged, so your workspace carries over. Save your work first. Remote daemons are not restarted by the local updater.
  • Windows, from 0.3.0 or earlier: run Compi 0.4.1 Setup once; the older update helper cannot replace itself. From 0.3.1, update in the app.

Limitations

  • On macOS the browser pane, its keyboard fix and the PDF, audio and video previews have not yet been checked on screen. A page there hides while a floating pane overlaps it, failed loads show no failure notice, and loading shows only once content arrives.
  • Animated GIF and WebP show their first frame only.
  • Windows packages are not publisher-signed. The macOS app is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. Operating-system trust warnings may appear; signed update metadata does not replace publisher signing.

v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 00:14

0.4.0

  • Browser pane: open a web page or local dev server beside its terminal
  • Images, SVG, PDF, audio and video open in file tabs
  • Text files over 1 MiB open read-only, a part at a time
  • Markdown has Edit / Read, remembered per file, keeping your place
  • Updating ends running shells: the daemon must restart

Browser pane

  • compi browse URL (or Open browser in the palette) opens a page in a pane beside the terminal; --down splits below. It splits, floats and closes like any pane and comes back after a restart.
  • Toolbar with Back, Forward, Reload/Stop and an address field (Ctrl+L, Cmd+L on macOS, or F6). Pages that fail to load show why, with Retry.
  • compi window list reports each shown page's address, title, loading state and error.
  • Uses the system web view (WebView2 on Windows, WebKit on macOS) with one profile per Compi instance. Only http, https, file and about:blank addresses open.

File previews

  • Images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP, ICO and others) open as images, with zoom about the pointer, drag to pan, Fit and 100%. SVG files get a View mode beside Edit.
  • PDF, audio and video open in the system web view: PDFs in its viewer, audio and video in a player. Files stream in pieces, so size does not matter; playback pauses when the tab is hidden, and closing the tab releases it.
  • Text files too large for the editor (over 1 MiB) show read-only 1 MiB at a time, with Start, Previous, Next and End, search within the part, and a notice when the file changes on disk.
  • Files the preview cannot show say what they are, for example 2.0 MB · Video file.

Markdown

  • Edit / Read / Diff switch on every Markdown tab, and Read Markdown (Ctrl+E, Cmd+E on macOS; a terminal keeps the key).
  • Switching keeps your place: the line at the top of one mode stays at the top of the other.
  • Each window remembers which files you last read, so a file reopens in the mode you left it. compi notes opens in Read, compi edit in Edit.

Fixes

  • Resizing a window no longer jumps a scrolled-back terminal to the bottom, including when a program such as omp reprints its text at the new width.
  • The image inspector's wheel zoom is gentler (about 1.4× a notch instead of over 2×).

Updating

  • Running shells end. Daemon protocol 34 and workspace format 8 replace 0.3.x's protocol 32 and format 7, so the update restarts the local daemon after you consent. Save your work first. Remote daemons are not restarted by the local updater.
  • A 0.3.x daemon refuses a workspace saved by 0.4.0. Do not downgrade an existing workspace without a backup.
  • Windows, from 0.3.0 or earlier: run Compi 0.4.0 Setup once; the older update helper cannot replace itself. From 0.3.1, update in the app.

Limitations

  • On macOS the browser pane and the PDF, audio and video previews have not yet been checked on screen. A page there hides while a floating pane overlaps it, failed loads show no failure notice, and loading shows only once content arrives.
  • Animated GIF and WebP show their first frame only.
  • Windows packages are not publisher-signed. The macOS app is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. Operating-system trust warnings may appear; signed update metadata does not replace publisher signing.

v0.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 23:59

0.3.1

  • Windows updates install and reopen Compi
  • Failed updates recover the previous windows instead of silently stopping
  • Existing Windows installs: run 0.3.1 Setup once to replace the old updater

Fixes

  • The Windows updater no longer mistakes its own background task for another installation because Windows reports the executable path in two different forms.
  • Installation ownership is checked before Compi closes or a consented daemon stops.
  • An authenticated update failure before activation now records the error and reopens the previous saved views when safe. Failed new-build attachment restores the previous version without rolling back underneath a still-running replacement GUI.
  • compi update waits for the new GUI to confirm attachment before reporting an installed update. Starting the helper, rolling back or timing out is not success.
  • Retrying a failed CLI installation re-verifies the retained package as a fresh attempt instead of immediately reporting the previous attempt's error.
  • Reopened windows show the final update result instead of leaving the install state unresolved.

Updating on Windows

  • Upgrading from 0.3.0 or earlier: download and run Compi 0.3.1 Setup once. The older installed update helper must be replaced by Setup; downloading a new payload through the broken updater does not replace it. Save your work before Setup and review any prompt to close Compi or end running shells.

  • Subsequent updates use the repaired helper to install and reopen Compi. Normal consent still applies when a daemon restart would end shells; the local updater never restarts remote daemons.

  • Daemon protocol 32, workspace format 7 and GUI control handoff 12 are unchanged from 0.3.0. Upgrading from 0.2.x still requires the protocol/workspace transition introduced in 0.3.0; do not downgrade an existing workspace without a backup.

Limitations

  • Windows packages are not publisher-signed. The macOS app is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. Operating-system trust warnings may appear; signed update metadata does not replace publisher signing.
  • Physical-input, macOS visual/IME and SSH note-file qualification from 0.3.0 remain open.

v0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 17:50

0.3.0

  • Files, editing, diffs, Settings and Monitor in your terminal's own pane
  • Full scrollback that stays put while output arrives
  • Markdown notes with diagrams, maths, wikilinks and backlinks

New

  • Open a view in place without losing the shell underneath. Use Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+E or the pane menu to switch between Files and the terminal; move a view to its own pane when you want both visible.
  • Monitor adds CPU, memory, GPU, disk and network detail pages, per-core and per-device views, and a process inspector with recent history. Quit and Force quit require confirmation and check process identity. Process columns can be resized, reordered and hidden, with choices saved.
  • Monitor Windows or an individual WSL distribution without mixing their totals or processes. Connected SSH windows monitor their connected host. Settings now includes a Monitor overview; performance diagnostics live under Advanced.
  • Review a historical commit with compi diff COMMIT [PATH[:LINE]]. Commit reviews are read-only and compare against the first parent.
  • Markdown files have Edit, Render and Diff modes in the existing editor. Render tables, task lists, callouts, Mermaid diagrams and LaTeX maths offline. Follow wikilinks and use the Notes panel for search and backlinks.
  • compi notes [FILE|FOLDER] [--edit], notes search and notes backlinks expose notes from the CLI, including JSON output. Commands, Settings, Monitor totals, processes, sources, inspection and confirmed process quitting are also reachable from the CLI.

Fixes

  • Scrolling keeps your reading position through new output, redraws, history eviction and window resizing. A new-lines indicator takes you back to live output.
  • The terminal retains the configured scrollback, including the full default 10,000 lines, instead of an effectively much smaller history.
  • Fractional wheel movement accumulates correctly, and pagers can use alternate-screen wheel scrolling.
  • Moving between diff files stays within the active commit or working-tree review.
  • Ended Windows terminals release Monitor's job handle while keeping their final screen available.

Limitations

  • Render mode is local to the window, not restored after a client restart. Use compi notes FILE or Render to reopen it.
  • Toggling a task in Render saves the whole current editor buffer, including other unsaved edits. Normal undo and file-conflict protection still apply.
  • Unsupported or invalid diagrams and maths show an error with their source. Rendering does not load external files or packages.
  • macOS cannot read threads of other users' processes; those values show a dash. Linux app groups use initials rather than native app icons.
  • Physical trackpad/mouse qualification, macOS visual and IME checks, and SSH note-file qualification remain open.
  • Windows packages are not publisher-signed. The macOS app is ad-hoc signed, not notarized. Operating-system trust warnings may appear; signed update metadata does not replace publisher signing.

Updating

  • Updating ends running shells. Save your work first.
  • This release changes the daemon protocol and workspace format. Restart Compi and its daemon together; older versions cannot read the new workspace format. Do not downgrade an existing workspace without a backup.

v0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 04:11

0.2.0

  • Monitor: see what your machine is doing beside your terminal
  • CPU, memory, disk and network at a glance, with the last hour of history
  • Processes grouped by app, with their icons

New

  • Monitor opens from the palette as a pane that splits, floats and closes like any pane. It shows the machine Compi's server runs on, so a connected host shows that host.
  • Overview has a card for CPU, memory, disk and network with its recent history, plus Memory by type and Memory by app. Click a card for its page. Pick 1m, 5m, 15m or 1h, or pause the graphs. Cards rearrange into three, two or one column as the pane's width allows.
  • History is kept for the last hour even while Monitor is closed, so graphs are full when you open it.
  • Processes lists every process with search, All / Apps / My processes / System filters and sortable columns. Group by app gathers each app's processes, helpers included on macOS, under one row with the app's icon and their totals. Rows hold still while the pointer is over the table.

Fixes

  • Programs that mark their own prompts, such as Pi, keep showing that they are working instead of losing their status mid-run.

Limitations

  • macOS doesn't let Compi read threads of other users' processes; they show a dash.
  • App icons come from macOS and Windows apps; Linux hosts show initials.

Updating

  • Updating ends running shells. Save your work first.

v0.1.9

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 14 Oct 10:31

0.1.9

  • Edit files beside your terminal, with tabs, search and safe saves
  • Review diffs, stage hunks and commit without leaving Compi
  • See status from supporting agents and tools on tabs and panes
  • Settings is now a searchable pane with a live theme grid
  • One palette for commands, tabs, projects and files

New

  • Content panes show a folder and a code editor next to your shells: compi files, compi edit FILE:LINE, Open file… (Ctrl+Shift+O, Cmd+P on macOS) or Ctrl-click a path in a terminal.
  • Saves keep line endings, warn when a file changed on disk, and never drop unsaved edits; unsaved text is backed up and restored after a crash.
  • Each file has one tab with an Edit / Diff switch (Ctrl+Shift+D). Diffs are unified or split, with changed words, folds and a Git gutter in the editor.
  • The Changes list stages, unstages and discards files and single hunks, and a commit box commits or amends. The header shows the branch and ahead/behind; Fetch, Pull and Push run in a terminal beside the editor, and a picker switches or creates branches.
  • Programs that support the Program Status Protocol (OSC 7501) show idle, working, blocked, done or error on their tab and pane; hover for the details. Each place can be turned off in Settings → Interface.
  • Settings opens as a pane (Ctrl+, , Cmd+, on macOS) that splits, floats and closes like any pane. Type to search every section. Themes are a grid you preview on your real panes before applying.
  • The palette is a drop-down that searches tabs and panes, commands, visited projects and files in the focused pane's folder. Choosing a project opens a new tab there.
  • Right-click opens a small menu for what you clicked instead of the palette. Every pane menu has the same actions: Move to new tab, Float or Dock pane, End process… and Close pane. The tab menu lists its panes, each closable in one click.
  • Drag a floating pane by its title onto another pane to dock it there. Panes glide into place when they move, and shells are resized once when they land. With reduced motion turned on, changes are instant.

Changes

  • End process… now asks first.
  • Menus, selects and popovers use one look: lists are as wide as their contents and open next to what you clicked.
  • Tiled panes show only the ⋯ grip on hover; the × moved to floating pane titles and menus.

Fixes

  • Opening Compi from Start or search no longer flashes a console window.
  • Cursor flicker while programs or agents redraw is gone (synchronized output).
  • macOS: prompt icons show, every Oh My Posh style is listed, and fullscreen no longer leaves a gap where the window buttons were.

Updating

  • Updating ends running shells. Save your work first.

v0.1.8

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 10 Oct 00:43

0.1.8

  • Drag panes to move or swap them
  • Drop a pane on a tab to move it there
  • Close tabs and panes in one click
  • Quieter focus marker, with a setting
  • Rounded empty screen in Comfy

New

  • Hover a pane and drag the ⋯ grip on its top edge: drop on an edge of another pane to split beside it, or on Swap to trade places.
  • Drop a pane on another tab to add it there. Rest on the tab to switch to it, then drop beside one of its panes.
  • Drop a pane on empty tab-bar space to give it its own tab.
  • Click the grip for the pane menu.
  • Closing a tab or pane takes one click. Settings → Interface → Confirm before closing brings the question back.
  • Focus indicator (Settings → Interface): Marker, Outline, Dim others or None. Marker is a small bar under the focused pane and a short outline when focus moves.

Fixes

  • The empty screen and the floating-tab screen are rounded like the panes in Comfy.
  • The empty screen offers Restore hidden tab only when there is one.
  • Remove tab and Remove pane are now Close tab and Close pane.

Updating

  • Updating ends running shells. Save your work first.

v0.1.7

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 09 Oct 00:18

0.1.7

  • WSL tab completion: 41.8 s → 0.07 s
  • WSL unknown command: 95 → <1 ms
  • CLI, many instances: 34 s → 0.5 s
  • New tab: no startup bar, ~0.2 s
  • New: Comfy panes, CLI, compi update

Speed

  • WSL finds Windows commands in one local folder, not dozens of /mnt/c folders.
  • WSL launches skip build-only and duplicate search folders.
  • Prompt hooks run once per prompt.

New

  • Comfy panes: rounded panes with gaps, default. Compact keeps them edge to edge (Settings → Interface).
  • Tab info: directory, process, Git and size.
  • Updates: one status line, one button.
  • Repair Compi fixes a broken install.
  • End in the tab menu ends a terminal in one click and dims its last screen.

CLI

  • compi controls workspaces, tabs, panes, layouts and windows from any terminal or script.
  • compi split --panes 4 --layout grid builds the whole layout in one step.
  • compi pane capture reads a pane's screen; compi pane send types into it.
  • Every command has --json output and its own --help, for scripts and agents.
  • Commands print one line, or nothing for send and run; --json keeps the full result.
  • Fast back-to-back commands no longer fail while a window resizes panes.
  • compi --version prints the version.
  • compi update checks, downloads and restarts, asking first and listing shells that end.
  • compi changes shows the running version and what changed in it.
  • compi theme install adds Zed themes.
  • Works inside Compi's WSL shells: clean output, and prompts can be answered.
  • Without --instance, it finds the running Compi at once; --instance '' picks the default.

Fixes

  • Blank tabs that blocked new tabs.
  • Shells ended by an update or restart come back on their own, in their last folder.
  • The recovery notice no longer shows on every launch.
  • Recovery overlays and hover cards removed.
  • Setup moves the service to the new version and asks before ending shells.
  • Setup accepts your own background service.
  • Remove works from any Setup file and deletes the whole folder.
  • Terminal scrolling and query replies.
  • Readable Setup log.
  • Closing the daemon console keeps it running.

Updating

  • Updating ends running shells. Save your work first.
  • On 0.1.3, use Compi-Setup.exe from this release.

v0.1.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 01:43

0.1.6

  • New Updates page: one status line, one button, sizes in MB
  • Repair Compi: Setup now finds and fixes a broken install
  • Setup upgrades installs stuck on 0.1.3
  • Plain error messages instead of Windows Installer codes

Updates

  • Settings → Updates shows the running version, what's available and one button for the next step: Check now, Download, Restart to update.
  • Checking is one switch, on by default. Downloads happen only when you click, unless you turn on Download updates automatically.
  • A dot on the sidebar button shows when an update is ready.
  • What's new shows the notes for both the available and the running version.
  • Advanced has Repair Compi and Open update log.

Repair

  • Compi-Setup.exe --repair checks the install and lists what's wrong, such as a background service that won't restart if it stops, missing program files, an unfinished update or WSL problems. Fix each finding or all of them.
  • Repair Compi in the app downloads the latest Setup, checks its signature and runs the same repair.
  • Each release now includes a stable-named Compi-Setup.exe.

Fixes

  • Setup and in-app updates compared the daemon task's owner by name, and Windows can report that owner as a bare user name, so your own task was refused as "belongs to another Windows account". Owners are now compared by account SID.
  • Setup over 0.1.3 left the background service on the old version, which newer Compi can't talk to. Setup now moves it to the new version, and asks first if that ends running shells.
  • Removing Compi with a Setup file other than the one that installed it failed with "Windows Installer couldn't finish". Remove now always targets the installed copy.
  • Remove now deletes the whole program folder.
  • Setup's log (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Compi\installer.log) is plain readable text again. Windows Installer's own record goes to installer-msi.log and covers only the latest run.
  • Shells that ended when Compi restarted are labeled Ended with a Restart shell button.
  • Includes the 0.1.5 fixes: closing the daemon's console window no longer stops its supervisor, and a stopped supervisor no longer blocks updates.

Updating

  • Updating restarts the Compi daemon, which ends running shells. Save your work first.
  • On 0.1.3, the in-app updater can't get past its own checks. Download Compi-Setup.exe from this release and run it instead.

v0.1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Oct 22:33

0.1.5

  • Updates no longer get stuck after the daemon's console window is closed

Fixes

  • Closing the console window that Compi's background service opens at sign-in no longer stops its supervisor.
  • An update no longer refuses to run when the supervisor has stopped but its daemon is still running.

Updating

  • Updating restarts the Compi daemon, which ends running shells. Save your work first.
  • Stuck on 0.1.3 with "cannot match target supervisor lifecycle identity"? Run & "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Compi\versions\0.1.3\compi-daemon.exe" --shutdown in PowerShell, then reopen Compi and update. This ends shells in the installed Compi.
