pkg_resources is deprecated as an API

**Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.**

If I run `make test-all` I got a deprecation warning for usage of `pkg_resources`.

**Describe the solution you'd like**

To be safe in the future we should switch to `importlib.metadata` instead of using `pkg_resources`.
