Modernize the site for readability, accessibility (incl. dark mode), including:

• adding a secondary navigation sidebar
• moving to bootstrap v 5.x
• panels/cards to partition info
• dark mode

The current Hugo theme is based on Hugo-material-theme (now archived) which in turn is based on Material-kit-bs4 (functionally EOL). Material-kit is that kit's successor, but is not quite a drop-in replacement. It is also minimally (if at all) maintained; it includes analytics integration for a service that shut down over a year ago. The extra things included in the UI kit such as this, that are not in use, are excess to CodeMeta's needs and complicate maintenance.

While it is possible to port from material-kit-BS4 to material-kit, my recommendation for this is to port the theme to the latest vanilla bootstrap while keeping most of the current look for familiarity. This simplifies the maintainability significantly since it avoids the complications of using a third-party kit.

I have a draft branch in my personal fork of the site (see the pingback abovebelow) which has:

• stripped out most of Material-Kit-BS4 except for the derived css file.
• replaced the one tiny bit of JS that stopped working (it wasn't even in the current/BS5 version of Material-Kit),
• migrated to vanilla Bootstrap bundle v5.3.8, JQuery 3.7.1, and
• tidied up duplicate and unnecessary assets (some were from the kit, others from the template's parent)

As best I can tell everything looks the same. The /codemetar/ self-contained site has not been touched.

Currently trying to figure out a staging solution.
