0.8.42
Release Notes
An incident fix: on one machine (argus on Athena, 0.8.38) confer watchers filled the process table and the machine had to be rebooted.
- A transient git failure can no longer fork a hub's identity. Under load, git returned EAGAIN
when asked for a hub's root commit, and the hub key fell back to a URL-derived form. The watch
lock lives under that key, so every plugin reader (each re-checking its watchers every minute)
saw "no watcher" there and started another, while the original kept running. The extra git load
made more calls fail, which fed the loop. Each clone now caches its resolved root id in
.git/confer-hub-keyand reuses it. This also saves a git process on most confer commands. - A timed-out git takes its children with it. confer killed only the git process, so whatever
it had started (ssh, the remote helper, a blob:none clone's lazy fetches) was orphaned and kept a
process slot when it hung. git now runs in its own process group and a timeout kills the group,
with a directkill(2)and no extra fork. - A cap on detached watchers. Starting a watcher is refused when a live watcher for the same
clone and role is already running under a different hub key, or when 64 watchers are already
live on the machine (CONFER_MAX_WATCHERSraises it). The error says why.
