PocketTracker 0.9.9

Miyoo Mini / Mini+

  • A new build for OnionOS on the Miyoo Mini and Mini+ — the lowest tier of devices PocketTracker aims at. Install steps are in the README inside the package.

MIDI

  • MIDI is in the release builds now, on the PROJECT screen under MIDI >.
  • An EXTERNAL instrument plays a hardware or software synth, with MPG, MPB, CCA–CCD, and the pitch commands bending it.
  • A MIDI keyboard plays the selected instrument, mono or with up to 8 voices.
  • Devices connect by themselves and reconnect when plugged back in.
  • Controller knobs can be mapped to mixer, effect and instrument parameters, by hand or by learning.
  • SYNC OUT sends clock; SYNC IN follows another device's tempo, start, stop and song position.
  • Two PocketTrackers can play one song between them over MIDI.

Reverb and delay

  • The reverb's new ALGO row picks OLD — the one that shipped, ReverbSc by Sean Costello (via DaisySP) — or HALL, ROOM, PLATE and FOIL, adapted from Michael Willis and Rob van den Berg's Dragonfly Reverb.
  • New reverb cells: DCAY, PRE, WIDE and MOD.
  • New delay cells: PONG, TONE and WOBL. Feedback above E0 turns the repeats into a held tone, a change of TIME bends the echoes like tape, and A switches TIME between free and note sync.
  • Built-in presets for both, and SAVE / LOAD for your own.
  • A on any REV or DEL cell opens that reverb or delay over the current screen.
  • TIM sets the delay time from a phrase or a table.

Writing music

  • CHD plays a note as a chord, and ARC beside it strums it.
  • L + a direction on PHRASE fills rows from one cell: every Nth row, a ramp, an even spread, or random values in the scale. (GitHub Issue #45)
  • NTH plays a row only on chosen passes of its phrase.
  • INS plays a step on another instrument, and on a table row hands the note on to another instrument.
  • A+B on an empty note cell puts a note OFF.
  • A on an empty FX cell repeats the last command you typed.
  • START plays from the instrument screens, and R+START plays the whole song.
  • An empty song row splits the song into parts that loop on their own, and EXPORT can render just one part.
  • B+UP/DOWN jumps 16 instruments or tables. (GitHub Issue #44)
  • A phrase note sounds for as long as A is held.

Grooves

  • Seventeen built-in grooves, groove files, a swing readout and a PPQ setting per groove.

Sample editor

  • BIT saves a sample at 32, 24, 16 or 8 bits.
  • The time-stretch has its own settings box with a preview.

Help, look and controls

  • New help on SELECT; SETTINGS > HELP switches between a short strip and a full page.
  • The theme editor rolls random palettes and warns when two colours are too close.
  • TRNS, a portrait skin that fills the width of an Android screen.
  • Controller buttons and key repeat can be remapped in config.json.
  • SELECT+B in the file browser deletes every selected file.
  • The Linux package can add PocketTracker to the app menu with install-desktop.sh.

Platforms

  • Android keeps playing a song in the background, with a notification to stop it. (GitHub Issue #40)
  • Windows can play through an ASIO driver (SETTINGS > AUDIO OUT).
  • Everything plays and exports at 48 kHz.
  • A sample voice and the effects cost less CPU, and presses, MIDI and live edits are heard sooner.

Fixes

  • VOL and other commands now reach ARP and RPT repeats. (GitHub Issue #42)
  • Mute and solo on the MIXER's REV and DEL strips no longer hit the track above. (GitHub Issue #38)
  • No more clicks on stop and start, on SoundFont notes, on filter and mixer moves, or from DUST.
  • SoundFont preset changes mid-song are heard again, and presets load in projects from another device.
  • Instrument edits reach the note already playing.
  • Many smaller fixes to HOP, the sample END, the EQ spectrum, the mixer and waking from sleep.

Worth knowing before you open an old project

  • The reverb's SIZE, DAMP and MOD use their whole range now, so a saved reverb sounds different.
  • An empty song cell loops the track's run of cells instead of resting.
  • A phrase row holding HOP is no longer played.
  • RND and RNL add to the typed value; CHA reads its digits as the chances of its left and right neighbours.
  • KIL always cuts the note.
  • SoundFont ARP / RPT repeats play at the note's own volume.
  • The Instruments, Scales, Grooves, Reverbs and Delays folders move into Presets/ at the first start.
  • A saved theme keeps its old colours until you pick a theme again.
