Mohio Home v0.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@countart countart released this 16 Oct 21:51

A patch release fixing issues found on a real Android tablet run of v0.5.0. This is a full release (not a pre-release), so the installer links below are permanent -- they always point at the newest full release.

Builds on v0.5.0.

What's fixed

  • The editor screen no longer shows a Windows "Install VS Code" card on Linux, macOS, or Android. Where VS Code is not present and there is no Windows installer to offer, it now shows your projects folder path and "open it in any editor you have," and offers code-server if that is already installed. (v0.5.0's fallback only covered the first-project screen.)
  • "See it running" now opens the project in your browser on every platform. It is an ordinary link (so the browser itself opens it, even when Mohio Home runs headless), and the project's address is shown as text next to it as a fallback.
  • "Open the folder" buttons are hidden on devices with no file manager (such as Android/proot), where they did nothing; the folder path is shown as text instead so it is always reachable.
  • Actions that only work on Windows are hidden elsewhere: "Fix my installation" and VS Code's "Set it up again" no longer appear on Linux/macOS/Android, where they were no-ops.
  • Settings no longer shows startup toggles that did nothing ("Open Mohio Home when I log in" / "Start the projects that were running last time") -- hidden until that behavior is actually built.
  • On Android, only one Mohio Home runs at a time. Opening it again (or re-running the installer) replaces the previous one, so there is a single process and a single current link; "Show my link" recovers the live link reliably.

Android

Install Termux from GitHub or F-Droid (not the Play Store build), open it once, then run:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/countart/mohio-home-releases/releases/latest/download/bootstrap_android.sh -o bootstrap_android.sh && bash bootstrap_android.sh

You can read the script first at https://github.com/countart/mohio-home-releases/releases/download/v0.5.1/bootstrap_android.sh .

If pasting the command fails with a stray character at the start, type it instead of pasting.

Still unverified on a tablet (do not treat as working until shown): these fixes address the exact v0.5.0 tablet findings, but the installer and app have not yet been re-run end to end on a tablet after this release -- including the home-screen shortcuts, termux-open-url opening Chrome, code-server's Mohio highlighting, and deploying to / connecting getmohio from Android (not tested at all yet).

Deploy

Deploy to getmohio is still being verified end to end on all platforms.

Windows: expect a SmartScreen warning

When you run bootstrap_windows.bat, Windows will very likely show "Windows protected your PC." This is normal for any new, unsigned tool - click More info, then Run anyway.

Files

  • Windows: download both bootstrap_windows.bat and bootstrap_windows.ps1, keep them in the same folder, run the .bat
  • macOS: bootstrap_macos.command
  • Linux: bootstrap_linux.sh
  • Android: bootstrap_android.sh (run in Termux -- see above)

(mohio-home-app.zip is downloaded automatically by the installer -- you do not need to download it yourself.)

Mohio Home v0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@countart countart released this 16 Oct 13:52

The pilot suffix is dropped at v0.5.0. This is a full release (not a pre-release), so the installer links below are permanent -- they always point at the newest full release.

Builds on v0.4.2-pilot.

What's new

  • Mohio Home on Android (Termux + Ubuntu). A one-command installer sets Mohio Home up inside a small Ubuntu environment on an Android tablet (via Termux and proot-distro), using the same Linux installer underneath, and adds home-screen shortcuts.
    ⚠ Not yet verified on a tablet after this release. The underlying proot/Linux install and the Run fix are verified; the Termux-specific pieces -- the wrapper end to end, the home-screen shortcuts, opening the link in Chrome (termux-open-url) -- are written to documented behavior and must be confirmed by a real cold run on a device. See the Android section below.
  • Installers are safe to re-run. Running any installer again over an existing install now updates it in place instead of failing. Verified on Linux and Windows (macOS uses the identical Linux logic, not yet run on a Mac).
  • API keys on devices with no system keychain. On Android/proot (and headless Linux), where there is no OS keychain, Mohio Home keeps saved API keys in its own private app storage -- a file only you can read, not a system keychain -- and Settings says so plainly. "Remove Mohio" deletes those saved keys. Every device that has a real keychain keeps using it, unchanged.
  • Carries the v0.4.2 fixes: Run works on Linux/macOS; no background errors without a keychain; no dropped connection on an unexpected error; the editor step on Linux/macOS without VS Code shows the project's folder path instead of a Windows-only install button.
  • Still installs the verified public Mohio 5.1.0.

Android (Termux + proot Ubuntu)

Install Termux from GitHub or F-Droid (not the Play Store build), open it once, then run:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/countart/mohio-home-releases/releases/latest/download/bootstrap_android.sh -o bootstrap_android.sh && bash bootstrap_android.sh

You can read the script first at https://github.com/countart/mohio-home-releases/releases/download/v0.5.0/bootstrap_android.sh .

If pasting the command fails with a stray character at the start (some keyboards insert one when you paste into Termux), type it instead of pasting.

Plug in and keep the screen on for the first run. It prints your Mohio Home link and opens it in Chrome. For a home-screen icon, install Termux:Widget (F-Droid) and add its widget. An optional in-browser editor (code-server) is documented alongside the installer.

Unverified on a tablet (do not treat as working until shown): the wrapper end to end (install -> create a project -> Run -> loads in Chrome), the home-screen shortcuts, termux-open-url opening Chrome, code-server's Mohio syntax highlighting, and deploying to / connecting getmohio from Android (not tested at all yet). Safe claim today: Mohio runs on Android via Termux, and the Mohio language 5.1.0 is verified there.

Mohio Home v0.4.2-pilot

Choose a tag to compare

@countart countart released this 14 Oct 17:51

Installer build for the Mohio Home pilot. Builds on v0.4.1-pilot.

This is a full release (not a pre-release), so the installer links below are permanent -- they always point at the newest full release and do not change when a new version ships.

This release fixes Run on Linux and macOS, which was broken in v0.4.1-pilot. If you installed on Linux or macOS, re-run the installer from the same link.

What changed since v0.4.1-pilot

  • Run now works on Linux and macOS. The console looked for the Mohio runtime at a Windows-only location, so clicking Run on a fresh Linux install failed with a blank "no response" page. It now finds the runtime correctly on every platform. Run is fixed on Linux (verified) and macOS (same code path, not yet tested on a Mac). (Found on a real Android tablet running the Linux installer inside proot Ubuntu.)
  • No more background errors on computers without a system keychain (headless Linux, Android/proot). A missing keychain now simply means "no key saved yet," instead of a repeating error behind the scenes.
  • No more dropped connections on an unexpected error. If something goes wrong while handling a click, Mohio Home now shows a plain-language message with the technical detail behind a Technical details toggle, never a blank browser error.
  • Editor step on Linux/macOS without VS Code. The first-project screen no longer shows a Windows-only "Install VS Code" button on machines that cannot use it; it shows the project's folder path and a plain "open this folder in your editor" line instead.
  • The installer now checks Run end to end -- at the finish it creates a project through the app and runs it, confirming the whole path works, not just that the language engine starts.
  • Still installs the verified public Mohio 5.1.0.

A note on Android

Running Mohio Home on an Android tablet uses Termux, then proot-distro Ubuntu, with the Linux installer. The Run fix was verified on Linux; not yet re-tested on the tablet. A dedicated one-command Android installer is coming in a later release.

  • Linux: bootstrap_linux.sh

v0.4.1-pilot

@countart countart released this 06 Oct 15:22

Installer build for the Mohio Home pilot. Builds on v0.4.0-pilot.

This is a full release (not a pre-release), so the installer links below are permanent -- they always point at the newest full release and do not change when a new version ships.

Mohio Home sets up everything a machine needs to build with Mohio -- the language runtime, a place for your projects, and the console you build in -- from one file, no terminal required.

What changed since v0.4.0-pilot

  • Permanent install links. The bootstrap scripts now fetch the app from the stable .../releases/latest/download/mohio-home-app.zip URL instead of a version-tagged one, and this release is published as a full release. Share the links below once; they keep working across future updates.
  • Carries the current Mohio Home app, including: VS Code syntax highlighting fixes for the real 5.1.0 language (interpolation, the mio* services, request, flow/walk/map, framework:/sector:); clearer starter-project comments (what journey.mho is for); and the Deploy screen now correctly reports a failed deploy instead of showing "deploying..." indefinitely.
  • Still installs the verified public Mohio 5.1.0.

(mohio-home-app.zip is downloaded automatically by the installer -- you do not need to download it yourself.)

v0.4.0-pilot

v0.4.0-pilot Pre-release
Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@countart countart released this 18 Sep 05:30

Pre-release installer build for the Mohio Home pilot. Builds on v0.3.1-pilot.

This is the first release that genuinely installs and runs for someone who only downloads the files on this page. Every earlier pilot release assumed you were running from a copy of the source repository; a plain download of the bootstrap files failed partway through. That is fixed here (see "The cold-download install fix" below).

Mohio Home sets up everything a machine needs to build with Mohio -- the language runtime, a place for your projects, and the console you build in -- from one file, no terminal required.

The cold-download install fix (the important one)

Every previous release's installer tried to load the Mohio Home app from a source checkout sitting next to it, which a normal downloader does not have -- so the install failed at the "Installing the Mohio Home app" step. Now the app ships as its own download here (mohio-home-app.zip), and each bootstrap script fetches and unpacks it automatically. Download only the files on this page and you get a complete, working install.

Platform status, stated plainly:

  • Windows -- proven end to end. A real cold download (only the release files present, nothing else) installs the runtime, the app, the VS Code extension and the starter example, launches Mohio Home, and answers a real request -- verified.
  • macOS and Linux -- the same fix is in place, but NOT yet verified on real hardware. The code paths mirror the proven Windows one and are syntax-checked, but no macOS or Linux machine has run them end to end yet. Treat them as "should work, unconfirmed" until tested on a real device.

What's new since v0.3.1-pilot

  • Installs Mohio 5.1.0 (pinned, up from 5.0.1). The installer pins an exact, verified version rather than "whatever is latest," so a future broken release can never be pulled in automatically.
  • Corrected starter project. A new project's index.mho is now the simplest thing that works -- a plain page that serves itself -- instead of the older, needlessly heavy boilerplate. Shared setup (your database connection, with room for shapes, shared values, maps, and more) lives in journey.mho, the project's "spine," with plain-language comments explaining what each part is for. Delete the comments once you are comfortable.
  • Opens where you left off. Once you have a project, Mohio Home opens straight to your projects instead of re-showing a one-time "Setup finished" screen on every launch.
  • Local version history for every project. Each project gets a real, silent local version history (a full Git repository underneath, via a built-in implementation, so it never depends on you having Git installed). "Save a version" records a snapshot with your own message; a clear indicator shows whether there is anything new to save.
  • Deploy to getmohio, for real. The Deploy screen connects to getmohio with your key, sends a project up, and reports its real status -- connected, deploying, and whether the live app is answering.
  • Your own AI keys, any major provider. Add keys for the major AI providers (or a custom one), stored in your operating system's secure keychain, so ai.decide runs against the model you choose.
  • Manage your project list. Rename a project, remove one from the list, or archive it -- and bring an archived project back, intact. Nothing is ever silently deleted.
  • Fixed a project-list scroll bug where a long list could scroll the whole window instead of just the list.

(mohio-home-app.zip is downloaded automatically by the installer -- you do not need to download it yourself.)

Pre-release

@countart countart released this 12 Sep 04:28

Pre-release installer build for the Mohio Home pilot. Builds on v0.3.0-pilot.

What's new since v0.3.0-pilot

  • Local version control: every project now gets a real, silent local git repository (via a pure-Python git implementation, so this never depends on a pioneer having real git installed). A new "Save a version" action in each project's More menu commits a real, pioneer-typed message; a real clean/dirty indicator shows whether there's anything new to save. A project created before this feature existed picks up its repo the moment it's first saved - nothing is ever silently rewritten.
  • Fixed: "Install this update" on the Version screen. This was failing silently for every real pioneer on every platform - the update mechanism called pip directly inside the installer's own virtual environment, but that environment is built without a pip module at all. Now goes through the same tool the installer itself already uses to build that environment, so updating in place actually works.
  • Fixed: the installer's own internal self-check (Windows, macOS, and Linux) was using a form of the language that the current Mohio compiler no longer accepts, so every fresh install's "making sure it actually works" step could report a false failure even though the real install underneath was fine. Corrected to the current, working syntax.
  • Fixed: on macOS and Linux, the installer could report "Mohio Home did not report a launch address" even on a fully successful first-ever install - a fixed two-second pause wasn't long enough for the app's own one-time startup cost before the installer checked whether it had opened. Now waits properly instead of guessing a fixed delay.

@countart countart released this 08 Sep 17:24

Pre-release installer build for the Mohio Home pilot. This is the first release published through this repo, so there's no prior release here to diff against — this note covers what the build actually includes.

What's in this build

  • Installer pinned to Mohio language v5.0.1 (the first working public release — v5.0.0 was published broken and was never used by this installer)
  • Full Deploy screen: connect to getmohio, real deploy, real status/health
  • Rename and Archive (hide/restore) for projects — no delete, files are never touched
  • Multi-provider AI keys: Anthropic, OpenAI, and Gemini, plus a free-text option for any other provider
  • Fixed: the project list no longer scrolls the whole window at scale — only the list itself scrolls now
  • Verified end to end against the real, live v5.0.1: mio check/mio serve on every real scaffold this installer generates

Windows: expect a SmartScreen warning

When you run bootstrap_windows.bat, Windows will very likely show "Windows protected your PC." This is normal for any new, unsigned tool — click More info, then Run anyway.

Files

  • Windows: download both bootstrap_windows.bat and bootstrap_windows.ps1, keep them in the same folder, run the .bat
  • macOS: bootstrap_macos.command
  • Linux: bootstrap_linux.sh
