@AlisdairM #366 proposed two directions for this, 4.2 was David's direction here (adding a static member function that returns an ordering) and 4.1 offered a different direction which was to add a comparison category type alias and cast the result of char_traits::compare(...) <=> 0 to that type. I don't think I actually knew about P1310 when I wrote that one.

LEWG preferred the type alias in Kona (which doesn't seem to have minutes?) That design is worded in #391.

@davidstone is this ready for review in Library Evolution? Does it need to be reviewed? Are there actionable things here (decisions we need to make)?

@brycelelbach This paper needs a new revision to account for #391 being adopted for C++20 (i.e. we're not adding char_traits::cmp, but we could consider deprecating compare in favor of <=> - which was added to all of those types).
