Personal commentary not working

When attempting to use the Personal commentary to leave notes with specific Bible verses I cannot get it to start. Right clicking in the Commentary window and then choosing Edit from the menu and from that submenu left clicking Open in editor results nothing happening.

I am running debian testing with all software updates applied. My xiphos version is 4.1.0 and my DE is XFCE4.

On Debian Buster (and I guess last Ubuntu releases), Xiphos is built without the editor, you can't open the StudyPad nor edit the Personal commentary, see:

we are currently in discussion about how to replace xiphos' editor, which has caused us grief for years. i am closing this because it's not precisely a bug, it's a choice on ubuntu's part to stop supporting the editor mechanism we've been using for 15 years. i have hope/expectation sometime in the next few months we will release a version of xiphos with a new editor.
