Feature: Store size/position/layout of side bar and terminal/debug window

My setup is usually )from left to right) open side bar, then editor window 1, editor window 2, then that terminal/debug/output/problems view that I don't know the name of. I noticed the sizes of the side bar and terminal view are dragable, but don't get saved as part of the layout, so if you change them, it messes up the saved layout.

i wish it was possible but i cant find any api reference for that, if u can search and send me links to read more about it, it would be helpful as well.

I have added a VSCode issue in the hopes of getting that functionality added to the backlog, though it has not picked up nearly enough votes for that. Any upvote is appreciated, maybe we'll get there after all:

so i found away to save everything, basically a full snapshot of the editor state, but to restore the state it might need some scripting to make sure vscode apply the new changes.

That is very exciting to hear! I use VSCode both at work and via remote, which causes a resolution change that messes up my layouts, and I literally have to fix them every day, so that feature would be awesome! Anything I can do to help, let me know

rename the zip to vsix then install it using https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/configure/command-line#_working-with-extensions

• backup ur current saveEditorLayout.list config in case you want to go back to v2
• if possible also plz test it on the web/remote version and reply back with your findings

I only use remote (WSL2), not sure what you mean by web ? The hosted VSCode thing you use through a webbrowser ?

yes, the web based, but for remote it should work as normal

Attempting to install gives the following error:

`2025-08-18 09:45:15.470 [error] Error while installing the extension ctf0.save-editors-layout Cannot read the extension from /home/me/.vscode-server/extensions/ctf0.save-editors-layout-3.0.0 file:///home/me/.vscode-server/data/User/profiles/-72b86097/extensions.json

I tried both through the --install-extension CLI flag as well as via the ...-Menu and providing the extension file on the remote host. The file is of course readable by the user, so I have no idea why it would say 'Cannot read'.

... while writing this post, I figured I'd try to manually uninstall the 2.0.2 version, and after that, the installation worked. Now I am presented with No db found when attempting to save a snapshot.
