Use the global Vue variable if defined, otherwise, use the vue module itself to set the directive.

many thanx, btw is it possible to use both the new import & the old require ?

It would still be possible, yes. Since the directive is linked to the module itself on run time, you can require the module from anywhere in your app and however you feel like doing it (using import or require). It doesn't even have to be imported in the same file. Could be:

// app.js
const Vue = require('vue')

// config/directives.js
require('vue-multi-ref')
