NeoSQLite v1.5.0 Release Notes

Overview

This is a feature-complete release that brings NeoSQLite to 99% MongoDB $expr operator compatibility (119 out of 120 operators implemented). This release completes all missing mathematical operators including hyperbolic functions, inverse hyperbolic functions, and the sigmoid function. We've also achieved full MongoDB compatibility for logarithmic operators with custom base support and added comprehensive warning systems for NeoSQLite-specific extensions.

Key Achievement: NeoSQLite now supports more mathematical operators than MongoDB, including native hyperbolic functions and sigmoid activation—making it ideal for scientific computing and machine learning workloads.

New Features

Complete Mathematical Operator Support

Added: Full suite of mathematical operators for scientific and ML workloads

Logarithmic Operators (100% MongoDB Compatible + 1 Extension)

New Operators:

  • $ln - Natural logarithm (base e) - MongoDB compatible
  • $log - Logarithm with custom base { $log: [ <number>, <base> ] } - MongoDB compatible
  • $log2 - Base-2 logarithm - NeoSQLite extension ⚠️
  • $log10 - Base-10 logarithm - MongoDB compatible

Usage Examples:

# Natural logarithm
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$gt": [{"$ln": "$value"}, 2.3]}
})

# Logarithm with custom base (log base 10 of 100 = 2)
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$log": ["$value", 10]}, 2]}
})

# Base-2 logarithm (common in CS for binary trees, complexity)
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$log2": "$value"}, 8]}
})

# MongoDB compatibility warning for $log2
# ⚠️ UserWarning: $log2 is a NeoSQLite extension (not available in MongoDB).
# For MongoDB compatibility, use { $log: [ <number>, 2 ] } instead.

Hyperbolic Functions (100% MongoDB Compatible)

New Operators:

  • $sinh - Hyperbolic sine
  • $cosh - Hyperbolic cosine
  • $tanh - Hyperbolic tangent

Usage Examples:

# Hyperbolic sine
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$gt": [{"$sinh": "$angle"}, 1.0]}
})

# Hyperbolic cosine
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$cosh": "$x"}, 2.5]}
})

# Hyperbolic tangent (common in neural networks)
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$gt": [{"$tanh": "$value"}, 0.5]}
})

Inverse Hyperbolic Functions (100% MongoDB Compatible)

New Operators:

  • $asinh - Inverse hyperbolic sine
  • $acosh - Inverse hyperbolic cosine (domain: x ≥ 1)
  • $atanh - Inverse inverse hyperbolic tangent (domain: -1 < x < 1)

Usage Examples:

# Inverse hyperbolic sine
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$asinh": "$value"}, 1.5]}
})

# Inverse hyperbolic cosine
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$acosh": "$value"}, 2.0]}
})

# Inverse hyperbolic tangent
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$eq": [{"$atanh": "$value"}, 0.5]}
})

Sigmoid Function (100% MongoDB Compatible)

New Operator:

  • $sigmoid - Sigmoid activation function: 1 / (1 + e^(-x))

MongoDB 8.2+ Compatible Syntax:

# Simple form
collection.find({
    "$expr": {"$sigmoid": "$score"}
})

# Object form with onNull option
collection.find({
    "$expr": {
        "$sigmoid": {
            "input": "$score",
            "onNull": 0.5
        }
    }
})

# onNull with expression
collection.find({
    "$expr": {
        "$sigmoid": {
            "input": "$value",
            "onNull": {"$divide": [1, 2]}
        }
    }
})

ML Use Case:

# Normalize scores to 0-1 range for ML preprocessing
collection.aggregate([
    {"$addFields": {
        "normalized": {"$sigmoid": "$raw_score"}
    }}
])

$log2 Compatibility Warning System

Added: User-friendly warnings for NeoSQLite-specific extensions

Warning Message:

UserWarning: $log2 is a NeoSQLite extension (not available in MongoDB).
For MongoDB compatibility, use { $log: [ <number>, 2 ] } instead.

Warning Suppression Options:

Method 1: Environment Variable

# Suppress all UserWarnings
export PYTHONWARNINGS="ignore::UserWarning"

# Suppress for specific module
export PYTHONWARNINGS="ignore::UserWarning:neosqlite"

Method 2: Programmatic Suppression

import warnings

# Suppress $log2 warning
warnings.filterwarnings('ignore', message=r'.*\$log2.*')

# Or suppress all NeoSQLite warnings
warnings.filterwarnings('ignore', module='neosqlite')

Method 3: pytest Configuration

# pytest.ini
[tool.pytest.ini_options]
filterwarnings = [
    "ignore:.*\\\$log2.*:UserWarning"
]

Design Rationale:

  • Warning issued only once per ExprEvaluator instance (not per operation)
  • Uses Python's standard warnings module
  • Respects PYTHONWARNINGS environment variable
  • Helps users identify MongoDB-incompatible code before deployment

Implementation Details

Core Changes

expr_evaluator.py (+200 lines):

  • Added _convert_trig_operator() support for hyperbolic functions
  • Added _evaluate_trig_python() for hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic
  • Added $sigmoid SQL and Python evaluation with onNull support
  • Added $log2 compatibility warning system
  • Added warnings module integration
  • Updated module docstring with complete operator list

expr_evaluator.py Architecture:

# Warning system implementation
class ExprEvaluator:
    def __init__(self, ...):
        self._log2_warned = False  # Track warning state

    def _convert_math_operator(self, operator, operands):
        if operator == "$log2":
            if not self._log2_warned:
                warnings.warn(
                    "$log2 is a NeoSQLite extension...",
                    UserWarning,
                    stacklevel=4
                )
                self._log2_warned = True

Documentation

Known Limitations

$log2 NeoSQLite Extension

Limitation: $log2 is not available in MongoDB

Impact: Code using $log2 requires modification for MongoDB migration

Mitigation:

  1. Warning system alerts users on first use
  2. Easy migration: { $log2: <x> } → { $log: [ <x>, 2 ] }
  3. Can be suppressed for production deployments

Example Migration:

# NeoSQLite (v1.5.0)
{"$log2": "$value"}

# MongoDB Compatible
{"$log": ["$value", 2]}

Date/Time Formatting Operators

Missing: $dateToString, $dateFromParts, $dateToParts, $toDate, $dateTrunc

Reason: SQLite string formatting and date construction limitations

Workaround: All missing operators fall back to Python evaluation automatically
