Inlay 1.2.1: Fix for Nintendo-layout handhelds

Choose a tag to compare

@dakingeman dakingeman released this 01 Nov 21:16
inlay-1 2 1-swap-buttons A small fix for handhelds set to a Nintendo button layout, like the Retroid Pocket 6.

Those devices report A, B, X and Y by the letter printed on them instead of where they sit, so every press landed on the opposite button. If that's you, go to Settings → Device and turn on Swap A/B and X/Y. Try your buttons on the same page shows straight away whether it's right.

It's off by default, so nothing changes for anyone else.

Updating: install Inlay-1.2.1.apk over your current version. Your settings stay. Obtainium picks it up by itself.

Thanks to the Retroid users on Reddit who reported it and sent a video.

Inlay 1.2.0 — Words, accents, sounds and the device in your hands

Choose a tag to compare

@dakingeman dakingeman released this 31 Oct 15:11
whats-new-1.2.0.mp4

The biggest update so far. Inlay now suggests words and learns yours, puts accents one hold away, tidies small slips as you type, and knows what you're holding. All nine sound packs were remade, and Settings, the tour and What's new got a new look in your own colour.

Typing

  • Word suggestions in all 11 languages, and they learn the names and game titles you use (on your device only).
  • Hold A on a letter for its accents.
  • Tidies up as you type: a lone i becomes I, and a space before a full stop moves after it. Each has a switch.
  • An optional number row.
  • B closes the keyboard and nothing else, so your browser no longer goes back when you only wanted the keyboard gone.

Made for what you hold

  • Pictures of your device that light up as you press, in the Button guide, the tour and What's new.
  • A new Device tab, with Try your buttons.
  • Automatic recognises handhelds like the AYN Odin, Retroid Pocket and Anbernic devices, and vertical ones like the Retroid Pocket Classic.
  • Works with just a TV remote on Android TV and Google TV.

Sound and look

  • Nine sound packs, all remade and checked: Soft, Thock, Tactile, Typewriter, Felt, Chime, Glass, Pop and Retro. Soft Deep became Thock.
  • Sounds play in silent mode on handhelds and TVs (phones still respect it).
  • A custom colour you shape with Colour, Strength and Brightness, always readable.

Also

  • Settings in six tabs, and it opens without the keyboard (press Y).
  • Lighter on the battery, and your clipboard and learned words stay out of cloud backups.
  • Lots of small fixes. The full list is in the changelog.

Updating: install Inlay-1.2.0.apk over your current version. Your settings stay. If you use Obtainium, it'll pick it up by itself.

Inlay 1.1.1 — faster, and the right stick joins in

Choose a tag to compare

@dakingeman dakingeman released this 25 Oct 22:59
whats-new-1.1.1.mp4

A speed update. I type fast and the keyboard felt a beat behind me, so this release is about making every press land instantly. The right stick also finally has a job.

What's new

  • The right stick moves the text cursor. Push it sideways and the further you push, the faster it goes. Hold RT to jump whole words, push up or down for a line (or the start and end of short boxes), and in select mode it grows the selection. It's on by default and can be turned off in Settings → Typing.
  • What's new. From now on, the first time you open Settings after an update, a short screen shows what changed, acted out on the keyboard in your own button icons. Once per update, then it gets out of your way. (Yes, the screen showing you the new things is one of the new things.)

Faster

  • Typing no longer waits on the app. The keyboard used to stop and ask the app about its text several times after every letter. Now it asks once, when you pause.
  • The highlight lands on the next key on the very first frame.
  • Sounds and vibration run on their own, so they never hold up the next press.
  • Holding a direction, X or LB / RB repeats sooner and faster.

Better

  • The left stick is more precise: a lighter push, no dead spots on the diagonals, and quick back-and-forth flicks all count. A light push moves gently, a full push fast.
  • Capitals after a full stop now work in apps that don't ask for them, like the Play Store search.
  • Long tour pages no longer hide their last rows on 1080p screens.
  • With Android's "Remove animations" on, the tour and What's new show still pictures.

Install

Install the APK over 1.1.0 and your settings carry over. The full button map is now in the README under Controls, and everything else is in the changelog.

As before: Claude wrote the code, and I directed and tested it on my AYN Odin 2 Portal. If something doesn't work on your device, please open an issue.

Inlay 1.1.0 — languages, themes, smart keys and a TV mode

Choose a tag to compare

@dakingeman dakingeman released this 25 Oct 13:50

Inlay 1.1 is the first big update, and most of it comes straight from your comments on Reddit and here on GitHub. Thanks for trying 1.0 and writing back.

What's new

  • 11 languages: English, Deutsch, Français, Español, Português, Norsk, Dansk, Svenska · Suomi, Türkçe, Русский and Українська. Pick up to three and switch with RT + LT.
  • Accents without touching the screen: type a letter, then RT + Y cycles é, è, ê…
  • Smart keys: / and .com in web addresses, @ in email boxes, a number pad for numbers.
  • TV mode for docked play: a compact floating keyboard with a big line showing what you type. It turns on by itself when you dock, and Inlay now installs on Android TV and Google TV.
  • Four new themes, including Clear, a see-through one with a slider.
  • Three new sound packs: Retro, Typewriter and Felt (seven in total).
  • A one-minute tour on first open. Skip it with Start, replay it any time from About.
  • Settings in your colour, a set-up card, and a refreshed icon.

Fixed

  • Swiping Settings away from recent apps no longer switches you back to another keyboard.

Install

Download Inlay-1.1.0.apk below and install it over 1.0. Your settings carry over. If you use Obtainium, it will pick this up by itself.
