0.131.1: Hosted desktops keep their screens on while participants wait
humanish 0.131.1 keeps a hosted desktop's screen on while a participant waits without input.
About 1 in 8 stock E2B desktops started with a screen saver that turned the screen black after 5
minutes, and a participant then spent its turns keeping the screen awake: one live hour cost
$17.70 where its pair cost $2.03. humanish now turns the screen saver off once the participant's
browser or terminal has opened. The refusal of an out-of-range actor.maxWaitMs also now says the
field caps a turn of only waits.
Fixes
- A study whose
actor.maxWaitMsis out of range, or whoseactor.idleWaitMsis longer than it, is refused with a message that callsactor.maxWaitMs"the longest one wait or one turn of only waits lasts". It said "the longest one wait action lasts", which since 0.131.0 leaves out that the field also caps how long a turn of only waits is watched. (#1860) - A hosted desktop's screen stays on while a participant waits without input. Three programs in the stock E2B desktop's XFCE session set the X screen saver timeout in its first seconds: xfce4-screensaver to 300 s, xfce4-power-manager to 600 s, and an autostart entry to off. The last write wins. Where it was 300 s, xfce4-screensaver turns the screen black after 5 minutes without input. That matches 2 of 8 desktops in one live check, where one participant then spent the rest of its hour keeping the screen awake, 171 requests for $17.70 against 43 for $2.03 in its pair. In a later check, 1 of 16 fresh desktops also ended at 300 s. humanish now runs
xset s offon each participant's desktop once its browser or terminal has opened and the desktop has waited 8 s to settle. Nothing waits for the three programs, so the order rests on that time: on the 16 fresh desktops, the last write came 1.6 to 2.5 s after a command sent as soon as the desktop was created. A desktop wherexsetfails gets a warning and the participant runs; a desktop withoutxsetis left as it is. On a live desktop set to 300 s, the screen went black at 300 s without input; afterxset s offon the same state it stayed lit for 9 minutes. (#1855, #1863)
Checked before release
- CI on this PR is the gate of record.
pnpm gateon the release commit passed. - The post-publish check rehearsed on the release tarball (
pnpm packed:check): all 125 rows passed. pnpm release:dogfood: a participant installed the tarball and ran the offline first-run study (share_ready, 16 of 16 checks, $0).- Live on the release tarball, on hosted E2B desktops:
- An OpenAI participant was held 6.7 minutes on a static page with no input. Its 12 screenshots were all lit, and no screen saver warning appeared.
study checkrefusesactor.maxWaitMs3600001 with the new wording.- try-live with analysis passed.
- Before merge (#1863):
- The cause was found by probing live desktops.
- A Claude review and a Codex review found no P0 to P2 defects.
- 4 participants were held 15.7 minutes each with no input, 0 of 60 screenshots black. One of them had the 300 s screen saver forced during setup.
Not verified
- Nothing waits for the three XFCE programs, so the fix depends on timing. Their last write came within 2.5 s of create on the desktops measured, and humanish's call comes at least 8 s after.
- The desktop terminal route and the speech template live.
- macOS and Windows.
