v2.0.0
Disk Inventory Z 2.0.0 — Background Scanning & Live Results
Requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. Universal build runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
This is the headline release of the modernized Disk Inventory Z. Scanning no longer freezes the app: the scan engine now runs in the background, results
appear as they're found, and the app stays fully responsive throughout. If you're coming from the original Disk Inventory X, this is the version to start
with — it brings the app fully current on recent macOS, including macOS 26 (Tahoe).
Under the hood
- Rewritten scan engine. The filesystem walk now runs off the main thread, so the window never beach-balls during a scan — menus, About, and Quit all keep
working while a scan is in progress. - Results stream in live. The file list and File Kinds table fill in as each top-level folder finishes, rather than appearing all at once at the end. The
treemap renders once the scan completes. - Concurrent scans are safe. You can open and scan several volumes at the same time without corrupting shared state.
- macOS 26 (Tahoe) correctness: the new /.nofollow and /.resolve system directories are skipped so disk-usage totals aren't double-counted.
- Removed a workaround from 1.6.0 that bypassed the system document controller; document opening now uses standard, non-deprecated framework APIs end to
end. - All ~100 deprecated-API warnings from the original codebase are gone, and the build now treats deprecation warnings as errors to keep them from creeping
back. - Fixed a treemap crash on full-volume scans (an NSIntegralRect rounding issue on the free-space / virtual-memory region).
What you'll notice
- A scan can be cancelled at any time and returns you to the disk-selection screen instead of quitting — and you can close a scanning window mid-scan
without crashing. - A compact progress overlay floats over the document window during a scan, showing the current path, item count, and elapsed time, while the window stays
usable. - A new disk-usage pie panel for full-volume scans, showing used vs. free space at a glance.
- New treemap appearance settings in a popover, with unified colors for free space and "other" files.
- Reworked settings: a dedicated "Scan Settings" button replaces the old preferences panel.
- The volumes list now defaults to local drives only on first launch (Network, External, and Mounted Images are off by default — flip them on when you need
them). - Side panels resize to fit their content, and the volumes list re-fits as you toggle which drive types are shown.

v1.7.0
Disk Inventory Z 1.7.0 — Modernized Side Panels
Requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. Universal build runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
This release retires the last of the deprecated UI from the original Disk Inventory X. The "File Kinds" and "Selection List" side panels were built on macOS
drawers, which Apple deprecated years ago and never updated for dark mode or modern layout. They've been rebuilt on current AppKit.
Under the hood
- Replaced the legacy NSDrawer side panels with a modern split-view layout. Files outline and File Kinds sit side by side across the top; the treemap fills
the width below. - The Selection List now opens as a proper floating panel instead of a drawer.
- Converted the main menu and document window from the old binary .nib format to editable .xib, so all four localizations (English, German, French, Spanish)
stay in sync. - Fixed a treemap rendering assertion ("rect exceeds bitmap width") triggered by fractional column widths.
What you'll notice
- The side panels no longer slide out as drawers from the window edge — they're integrated into the window itself and behave correctly in dark mode.
- A wider color palette for file kinds (30 colors, up from 12), so more kinds get a distinct color before reuse.
- New toolbar icons and a "Choose Another Disk" button to get back to the volume list quickly.
- Closing the last window now quits the app, as expected on macOS.
- The file list correctly shows row one below the column header on first open, instead of hiding it underneath.
Known limitations
- Very large scans still block the main window while running; background scanning arrives in the next release.

v1.6.0
Disk Inventory Z 1.6.0 — First Release
Requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. Universal build runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
This is the first official release of Disk Inventory Z, a modernized fork of the classic Disk Inventory X. The original is no longer maintained and was built against
old frameworks that have been retired by macOS; this release brings most things current (another release in the future is planned as well).
Under the hood
- Universal build (Apple Silicon and Intel x86_64).
- Removed dependencies on the long-retired OmniFoundation, OmniAppKit, and OmniBase frameworks.
- Migrated to current macOS APIs throughout — file management, document loading, pasteboard, drag and drop, alerts, drawing, color handling, and "Open With" all use modern,
maintained equivalents. - Fixes several crashes that affected the original on recent macOS: a crash on scan completion, an assertion that aborted any non-trivial scan in some configurations, and a
startup race condition in the disk-filter switches.
What you'll notice
- The window opens at a sensible size with room for the side panels, instead of filling the screen and pushing controls off-screen.
- The "File Kinds" and "Selection List" side panels consistently open on the right side of the window.
- Columns fit the window automatically. Long names and paths truncate with an ellipsis ("…") instead of being cut off mid-word.
- Right-click any file or any kind to "Show Files in Selection List" — quicker navigation when you spot something interesting in the file list.
- Holding Shift while zooming the treemap now slows the zoom (was silently broken in the original).
- The first disk in the volumes panel is selected by default — press Return immediately to scan it.
- Dark-mode text appears in the correct color across all panels.
- A bottom status bar shows the original scan root, total size, and file count — stable through zooming.
- The Cancel button on long scans is responsive on the first click, and the app remains usable (App menu, Quit, About) while a scan is running.
Known limitations
- The side panels still use the legacy "drawer" UI from the original; modernizing them is planned for a future release.
- Some operations (very large scans) still block the main window while running; background scanning is planned next.
