Azimuth Digital 0.7.1
- Quitting Azimuth closes everything it opened on this computer: the
output and the operator screen too (it used to stay open, saying the helper
was not reachable). On a Mac or Linux, closing the start script's Terminal
window is quitting: the show is saved and the output and the operator
screen close; before, they stayed open. - On a Mac or Linux the start script starts the helper again if it ever stops
by itself, as Azimuth Digital.exe does on Windows: at most three times in
two minutes, saying why in its window. The output keeps playing and the
operator screens reconnect; after such a restart Azimuth opens an operator
screen only if none came back by itself (on Windows too, where a second one
used to open). - Linux: Start Azimuth (Linux).sh starts Azimuth on Ubuntu 22.04 and later
(other distributions too), with Google Chrome or Chromium; it offers to
download the Node.js it needs into the Azimuth folder, as the Mac script
does. Converting needs the distribution's ffmpeg. See the manual's Linux
section. - Updates install from inside Azimuth, Windows, Mac and Linux: when a new version is
out, its button at the top of the operator screen has Install and
restart. Azimuth downloads the new version, checks its signature and that
it starts, and installs it while Program is clear (on air it downloads and
waits for End All). It restarts in a few seconds, the operator screen
reloads itself and the output opens again; Media, Shows, Logs, config.json
and tools are never touched. The version before is kept for 30 days:
Settings › Info › Updates › Go back. From this version on; 0.7.0 is
updated by hand once more. - Settings replaces Output setup: one dialog with three tabs. Output has
the displays, the test signal, the stats over the output and the audio;
Remote has remote access, network control (Companion, PlaybackPro TCP
and UDP, OSC) and monitor pictures; Info has a new media report (every
clip in the show, its format and how this computer plays it), this
computer, updates and the log, which moves here from its button in the
top bar. Settings opens on the tab used last; the footer's load meters
open Info. - Settings › Output lists the displays on its own a few seconds after
Azimuth opens (Chrome asks once to see them), so the operator only picks
one: the Display box comes first, with Detect again. - Each clip has its own fit: Fit, Fill, Stretch or 1:1 at the top of its
Geometry tab, instead of one Fit for the whole output. Edit multiple sets
it on many clips; Copy and Paste geometry carry it; Reset gives Fit. A show
saved by an earlier version opens with every clip on the fit this
computer had, so nothing moves; new clips start at Fit. - The clip settings' Main tab shows how the clip decodes at the bottom, and
In and Out sit in two columns above the fades. - The playlist's Loop and Link durations are wide enough for -0.5 and -10.5
(no spin buttons; the arrow keys still step them). - Drag video, picture and sound files, or whole folders, from Explorer or
Finder onto the playlist: they go where they are dropped. Files already in
the media folder are added as they are; any other is copied into the media
folder first (its row shows COPY and how far it is, and plays once the copy
is in), keeping the folders dragged and never replacing a file ("(2)" when
a name is taken). While a clip is on air, copies run at most 60 MB/s so
playback keeps its disk. Two files of that name and size in the media
folder: Azimuth asks which. A drop is one Undo step; a copied clip is
checked like any clip added. A file dropped elsewhere on the operator
screen no longer opens in its tab. - The Media column counts every audio track: a clip with eight mono tracks
shows "audio 8 ch in 8 tracks" (QuickTime files with more than two LPCM
channels included). - A config.json that cannot be read (a hand edit with a comma missing) is
kept aside as config-unreadable-.json and the log says so, instead
of being replaced with the defaults without a word. - The Slate is gone: Set Slate in the Main tab, Ctrl+, OSC
/azimuth/mark/slate and Companion's "Mark Slate" choice. Marking is In and
Out, as before; a show saved with slates opens without them. - Mac: the quick start, the manual, the README and the download page walk
through allowing the start script on macOS 15 and later (Done, then
Privacy & Security › Open Anyway), and say how to update on a Mac without
losing shows: Finder cannot unzip over a folder, and replacing the old
folder throws its shows away.
Azimuth Digital 0.7.0
Geometry in pixels, smoother playback with the GPU renderer, and exact loops.
- The Geometry tab can show a clip's geometry in the output's own pixels: the
switch at its top changes between % and Pixels. Width, Height, Left and Top
place the picture exactly: whole pixels typed in land exactly on those
pixels, with both renderers. Keep shape, 1:1 (one clip pixel on one output
pixel), Centre and Whole pixels help line clips up. Clips filmed on a phone
held upright count as they are shown (portrait). - The GPU renderer (Output setup › Picture › Renderer › GPU) now shows every
frame for the same time: a 30 fps clip on a 60 Hz output is two refreshes a
frame, steadily. Before, a frame now and then stayed on for three refreshes
and the next for one, which showed as a small judder in slow pans. - With the GPU renderer the sound now goes with the picture. Its picture comes
a little later than Standard's (Azimuth draws it after the players hand over
their frames), so the sound waits as long: about 45 ms at 60 Hz. Standard is
unchanged. - The last frame of a clip is shown for its full time before a loop, a link
or the end, with both renderers (it used to be cut short). - With the GPU renderer the clip that comes next starts on time too, so a loop
takes exactly the clip's length and runs through the seam at the same
cadence as the rest of the clip. - "Frame gaps" in the status line now counts only frames that were not shown.
With 50 and 60 fps clips it used to rise nearly every frame while every
frame played.
Azimuth Digital 0.6.3
Azimuth now tells you when a new version is out.
- Once a day (the first time half a minute after it starts) Azimuth asks
GitHub whether a newer version is out. If there is one, a small
"0.x.y available" button appears at the top of the operator screen; click
it for what is new and the download. Nothing is downloaded or installed by
itself and the show is never interrupted: you update when it suits you. - The check sends nothing about you, the computer or your shows, and the
answer is signed, so Azimuth only believes one that really comes from
Azimuth Digital. Without internet it stays quiet and tries again the next day. - Output setup › This computer › Updates turns it off, or checks at once.
Azimuth Digital 0.6.2
Easier on a Mac.
- "Start Azimuth (Mac).command" gets Node.js by itself: on a Mac without
Node.js 20 or newer, it offers to download the current Node.js 22 from
nodejs.org into the Azimuth folder (tools/node, about 50 MB). The download
is checked against nodejs.org's checksums and Node.js's signature, needs no
password and installs nothing elsewhere. A Node.js the Mac already has is
used as it is. - The script now comes out of the download ready to run: no more
chmod +xin Terminal first. The first time, macOS may still ask to
confirm it (System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway). - Converting ProRes on a Mac no longer needs Homebrew: as on Windows, the
Convert window offers to download ffmpeg the first time. It gets ffmpeg
and ffprobe for the Mac's processor (Apple silicon or Intel) from Martin
Riedl's FFmpeg builds into the Azimuth folder (tools/ffmpeg), checks them
against the server's checksums and their signatures, and needs no password.
An ffmpeg installed with Homebrew is still used if the Mac has one.
Azimuth Digital 0.6.1
Azimuth Digital now looks like an app of its own on Windows.
- Azimuth Digital.exe starts Azimuth: no black window. The Azimuth icon
sits in the notification area, by the clock; right-click it for Open
operator screen (or double-click it), Open output, the Azimuth and Logs
folders, and Quit Azimuth. Starting it again while Azimuth runs just opens
the operator screen. Closing the operator screen leaves Azimuth running. - If the helper ever stops by itself, Azimuth starts it again and says so by
the icon; the output keeps playing meanwhile. - A new icon, on the program, the notification area, the taskbar and the
operator, monitor and output windows. Windows (Task Manager, the firewall's
first-run question, file properties) now names Azimuth Digital and Azimuth
Digital LLC instead of Node.js. - The helper's messages go to Logs\helper-console.txt.
Troubleshooting\Start Azimuth with a console window.bat runs Azimuth the old
way, with its messages in a window. - The README in the download says the right version again.
- Updating from 0.6.0 or older: "Start Azimuth.bat" is no longer needed and
can be deleted. Mac: nothing changes; start Azimuth with
"Start Azimuth (Mac).command" as before.
Azimuth Digital 0.6.0
A folder browser for the media folder, sliders that follow the mouse, and
values you can type.
- Add clips and Locate: Browse… next to the media folder shows the show
computer's drives, a few places (the Azimuth Media folder, the one in use,
Desktop, Videos, Documents) and the folders inside the one you are in, with
how many media files it holds. Click a folder to open it, Up or the path to
go back, then Use this folder. Works from remote operator screens too. A
folder inside the Azimuth folder is remembered relative to it. - Geometry and Levels sliders follow a drag all the way. Before, each change
rebuilt the panel, which replaced the slider under the mouse and ended the
drag after a short move. The panel now only changes what changed. - The value beside each slider (and beside Master in Output setup) is a field:
type a value and press Enter or Tab, Esc puts it back, Up and Down step it
(Shift: ten steps). Typed values stay within the slider's range and land on
its steps.
Azimuth Digital 0.5.0
Audio meters, a wider playlist, and less overhead everywhere.
- Program audio meters on the operator screen, right of the Program transport:
left and right output level with peak hold, the highest recent peak as a
number, and a clip warning at 0 dBFS. Peaks are measured over the whole time
between two updates, so short peaks are not missed. - Playlist: the Section column is gone (set sections with Edit multiple; they
still head the printed running order and the monitor page). The playlist is
wider and Title and Media have more room. - Monitor pictures are composed and encoded in a background worker on the
output, and decoded and drawn in a background worker on the operator and
monitor screens. In tests the output's playback thread does a fifth of the
work it did with monitor pictures on, the operator screen less than half. - The status sent to each screen ~15 times a second is a quarter of its size:
the log and setup details go out only when they change. The operator screen
only touches what changed. - Windows show computers: the output keeps the display and computer awake
(no "no signal" after a long hold on black), ignores keyboard and headset
play/pause keys, sends pixel values unchanged regardless of the display's
colour profile, uses the faster graphics chip on laptops with two, and
Azimuth's Chrome windows run no updates or background downloads. The helper
runs slightly above normal priority. The GPU load reading asks Windows for
less, less often. - Locate: a path being typed is no longer replaced when the media list
refreshes (this also made a browser test fail now and then).
