This is a library that adds additional functionality to buttons (or any other html component) in a web page. The idea is to simplify some tasks that we usually do in web pages, such as adding a confirmation dialog prior to submitting a form, or verifying that some condition is met prior to executing a function.
The library adds the following types of buttons:
- verify button that verifies that one condition is valid prior to executing the function that it should execute. And if the condition is not met, show a modal dialog to inform the user and interrupt its action. It is useful for (e.g.) form verification. (see details)
- confirm button that makes that a button shows a confirmation modal dialog prior to executing the function that it should execute. It is useful for (e.g.) confirm the action of submitting a form or deleting entries in a database. (see details)
- asynctask button that executes an asynchronous task prior to executing its real action, and will show a modal dialog while it is being executed. It is useful for (e.g.) executing a long task prior to submitting a form. (see details)
- showmessage button, that shows a modal dialog with a message prior to executing its real action. It is useful for (e.g.) showing the user a message when he is submitting a form. (see details)
- formset button, that sets the values of a form fields prior to executing its real action. It is useful for (e.g.) setting a hidden field in a form prior to submitting it, or pre-filling a form. (see details)
- formbutton button, that substitutes the button by a form that will contain the button. It can also add hidden fields to the form, to be submitted along with the button. It is useful to avoid the need of creating unnecessary forms in the html code. (see details)
The most simple example is the next one:

In this example we have a form. When the user submits it...
- the button verifies that the fields
name
andemail
are not empty. If they are empty, a modal dialog is shown to the user with the message please fill all the fields. - If the fields are not empty, a confirmation dialog is shown to the user with the message are you sure you want to submit this form?.
- If the user confirms, a message dialog is shown to the user with the message thank you for submitting the form.
- And finally, the values of the fields
name
andemail
are set in the hidden fieldpayload
in the form - ...and the form is submitted (it was its first purpose).
And we did all this without writing a single line of javascript code except for the validation and the creation of the derived values in the payload.
The library is written in javascript and is mostly designed to work with Bootstrap, although it is not mandatory. It also provides integration with jQuery, but it is not needed.

It is possible to use PowerButtons in a declarative way (i.e. including parameters in the html5 tags), or programmatically in a script.
I prefer to use the library in a declarative way, so that I can add the functionality to the buttons without writing any javascript code. The library adds the functionality to the buttons by means of html5 attributes.

The confirm button shows a confirmation dialog prior to executing its real action, so that the user can confirm that he really wants to execute the action.
The basic syntax to use this plugin is to include the attribute confirm in the button tag such as the next one:

Once the Confirm button is clicked, the dialog will be closed and the activity in the button will continue (i.e. submit or execute any other click handler).

The showmessage button is a button that shows a modal dialog with a message prior to executing its real action. It is useful for (e.g.) showing the user a message when he is submitting a form.
The basic syntax to use this plugin is to include the attribute data-showmessage in the button tag such as the next one:

This is a special case for the actions chain that is intended to override the next actions chained for this button. If is useful to enable a simple workflow for the power-actions.

Use case: A submit button that may overwrite a file. It is possible to use the confirm
action to ask the user if he is sure to overwrite the file. But if the file did not exist, the app should not ask for confirmation. In this case, the override
action can be used to skip the confirm
action if the file does not exist (* in the declarative way, the override
action is the first action to be executed).

The formset button is a button that sets the values of a form fields prior to executing its real action. It is useful for (e.g.) setting a hidden field in a form prior to submitting it, or pre-filling a form.
The basic syntax to use this plugin is to include the attribute data-formset in the button tag such as the next one:

Take into account that the values to set can be either plain text or javascript expressions (provided that the value to set starts with javascript:

IMPORTANT: in javascript, the names of the dataset attributes cannot contain dashes, and also are camel cased. So the names of the fields to set are case insensitive and cannot contain dashes.
The formbutton button is a button that substitutes the button by a form that will contain the button. It can also add hidden fields to the form, to be submitted along with the button.
The basic syntax to use this plugin is to include the attribute data-formbutton in the button tag such as the next one:

I find that it is very useful to avoid the need of creating unnecessary forms in the html code. For example, a web app with a control panels with many buttons and each of them may submit to different urls or with different parameters.

The asynctask button is a button that executes an asynchronous task prior to executing its real action, and will show a modal dialog while it is being executed.
The basic syntax to use this plugin is to include the attribute data-asynctask in the button tag such as the next one:

When the button is clicked, the code inside the data-asynctask
attribute will be evaluated and, the modal dialog will be shown until the evaluation of the code finalizes.
In the case of the example, the code will fetch a dummy url that will take 5 seconds to respond. The modal dialog will be shown until the response is received.

It is important that the code inside the data-asynctask
will be waited for its finalization. So the code executed as the asynctask must be either a synchronous function or a promise. If it is a promise, it will be awaited for its finalization. If it is a function, it will be executed and awaited for its finalization.
E.g. the next code (which is similar to the previous example, but delayed in time) will not work as expected:

In this case, the function returns inmediately and so the modal dialog will be shown and closed immediately. The correct way to do it is to return a promise that will be resolved when the timeout is finished:

If the code is synchronous, it will be executed and awaited for its finalization. E.g. the next code will work as expected:

This code simply runs an unuseful loop for 5 seconds before returning. The modal dialog will be shown until the code returns.
If your task can be aborted, it is possible to set a cancel callback to the asynctask by means of the data-asynctask-cancel
attribute. If the callback is provided, a cancel button will appear in the modal dialog and, if pressed, the code will be evaluated when the cancel button is pressed.
Have in mind that the execution of the cancellation code will not make the dialog to be hidden: the dialog will be hidden when the code returns. So your function needs to be cancellation-aware. This is made in this way to protect the execution of the original code.
E.g. the next code is a very simple example of a cancellation-aware function:

Once you have your interface, you can use the programmatical method to add any of the functionalities to your buttons.

A button can contain multiple of these functionalities at the same time. For example, a button can be a confirm button and a verify button at the same time.
If using the declarative method, there is a fixed order:

If using the programmatical method, the order in which the actions are added is the order in which they will be executed.
E.g. a button can be a confirm button and a verify button at the same time:

The library exports some utility function that can be used in other javascript code. These utilities are under the namespace window.powerButtons.utils
.
At this moment the utilities exported are related to the creation of modal dialogs. The functions are:

: creates a modal dialog with the given options. The dialog will have a message, a title, and two buttons: Confirm and Cancel. The Confirm button will execute the functiononConfirm
