dotnet tool install fails

Installation of the dotnet interactive tool with latest version fails (Following instructions on the nuget page):

dotnet tool install --global Microsoft.dotnet-interactive --version 1.0.607001

Tool 'microsoft.dotnet-interactive' failed to update due to the following:
The settings file in the tool's NuGet package is invalid: Settings file 'DotnetToolSettings.xml' was not found in the package.
Tool 'microsoft.dotnet-interactive' failed to install. Contact the tool author for assistance.

This also breaks the vscode polyglot extension, which just sits and hangs:

Please can this be investigate and resolved?

Same issue here, the VS Code extension is inoperable and my company had to roll back to a previous version. I have dotnet version 8.0.300 installed

The latest version requires the .NET 9 SDK. If you install that, do you still see this issue?

The user warning about the .NET SDK is still instructing the user to install 8.

Upgrading to dotnet 9 is not an option for us, what version should we be using?
