How much more effective is a contact form vs a simple mailto link?

Currently on the website we have 2 places with simple mailto links (and no contact forms).
One on the top right:
dwylio top right mailto link

And one on the bottom right (both the envelope and the email address itself):
dwylio bottom right mailto link

These have never been used.

Of course I suspect that the reason for this is the massive call to action, but it will be interesting to A/B test in future iterations how contact forms work vs mailto links.

The way we can test this in the Next Iteration #51 is to use an email alias.
Does this mean we need to move to Google Apps for Email...? dwyl/hq#38

I am hugely in favour of the contact form, rather than mailto. With mailto you have to mess around with outlook etc.

But wait! What if dwyl clients have outlook and not gmail!? 🙈

Perhaps the solution is a contact form with a big call to action.

Having said that ...

I love the idea of a contact form to get more directed information, in two ways:

  • To get more targeted information (for example, if you want a project, here are some extra fields so we get some useful info from you first time round)
  • To use the placeholder text to give people some direction.

But I'd love to A/B test this.

Interesting contact form from rawnet.

...with a budget field too - part of the 'useful info' we can get from clients @iteles ? (think we may be dealing with slightly lower figures 😄)

and what about leaving a contact number too? I've seen a number of agencies (especially small scale ones), that have a phone number. Thoughts?

  1. Would you be comfortable providing a phone number on the contact form?
  2. Would you like to have a 'budget' box on the contact form and if so - what should the numbers be? (we'll have an option saying 'It's not about work', or something similar)

  1. Yes. We have to have this. But I need to investigate forwarding calls from landlines as I don't like the idea of our mobile numbers on there.
  2. Yes to budget (let's test it to see if anyone uses it). Let's use the numbers above but change '25k' to '15k'. And add an 'I don't need an app' option to the dropdown.

Good a place as any to start!

By the way, I'm a big fan of how clean the rawnet form is but not a fan of all those fields. I don't think we need a subject field for example. It should just be concatenation of 'dwyl.io enquiry from' and the person's name (do we even need that?) or email address for example.

FYI, from my experience with the FAC contact form, it's incredibly annoying having a load of conversations with the same/similar subject

Agreed @rub1e, that's why I'm suggesting we concatenate with the email address as the 'unique ID' of sorts 😉 (I assume once they use the contact form they won't need to again so the subject line won't be repeated.

@rub1e Also, thanks for following along, it's so nice to get other people's thoughts!

@iteles with the 'budget' options is it:

  • under 15k,
  • under 25k,
  • under 50k,
  • under 100k,
  • above 100k
  • I don't need an app!

?

Sure. I'm not sure we need the £25k in there!

Please don't use Facebook as an example here, we don't in any way want to endorse their practices.
(see https://github.com/dwyl/start-here/blame/master/manifesto.md#L22)

Let's have a quick discussion in this issue about what would be best before any further commits.

Love the 'What problem can we solve?' text, would just add 'for you' onto the end of that sentence: 'What problem can we solve for you?'

@iteles With you on not endorsing facebook!

Are there any mainstream big names we could put there which might have similar comedic effect whilst not undermining our values?

Tim Berners-Lee sounds vanilla enough for now (though I personally am an Elon Musk fan) 😊

@iteles - The latest dwyl site has both options - is there any more testing/research to be done here or can the issue now be closed?
