What happened?

The logical order of the document is confusing, which is perplexing. Moreover, Elasticsearch hasn't been installed yet, but the document already provides guidance on editing the configuration file that only exists after installation.

Good finding here, I see two options:

• Move the document to the reference docs, as it's not a system configuration topic, more an Elasticsearch configuration item about how DNS resolution works in Java. --> Update, better to move it here, as Shaina has suggested :)

• Keep it here, but explain that the suggested configuration should be applied after installation, somewhere around here:

These values should be suitable for most environments, including environments where DNS resolutions vary with time. If not, you can edit...

In a parallel topic, while analyzing this issue I've realized that we have a similar problem with the bootstrap checks doc! What are they doing in the Important system configuration section?

As those are descriptive and also not related with OS configuration, I'd suggest to place them directly under Deploy an Elasticsearch cluster, at the same level as all the installation docs and Important system configuration. Probably after Important system configuration and before the install docs, as it might be a good reading for a user before the actual installation.

@eedugon maybe we could reach out to Jason who moved these to the system config docs in the first place here to confirm this is purely a post-install concern.

if it doesn't belong here, perhaps it goes here which is where we deal with key post-install config.

agree that the jvm settings should be reflected in the jvm reference doc though.

aligned on moving the bootstrap checks doc as described.

@shainaraskas , yes, that's the perfect spot for that document IMO.
I'll double check with Jason that the doc is more a post-install topic than a pre-install OS setup.
