Release list
Merik 0.7.2
Merik 0.7.2
Merik for macOS is now signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without the right-click and Terminal steps. The program itself is the same as in 0.7.1.
What's new
- macOS: signed and notarized. Open the DMG, drag Merik onto Applications and start it. macOS may ask once to confirm that the app was downloaded from the internet. The
xattrcommand is no longer needed. - Windows installer (from 0.7.1):
Merik-0.7.2-windows-x64-setup.exe. It is not code-signed yet, so Windows may warn.
Install
macOS
- Download the file for your Mac:
Merik-0.7.2-arm64.dmg(Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later) orMerik-0.7.2-intel.dmg(Intel, macOS 15 or later). Open it and drag Merik onto Applications, then start it.
Windows (64-bit)
- Download and run
Merik-0.7.2-windows-x64-setup.exeand follow the installer. It installs for your own account and needs no administrator rights. - The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway.
- If there is no "Run anyway" button, SmartScreen is set to block: open Windows Security, App & browser control, Reputation-based protection settings and set Check apps and files to Warn (or Off).
- If Windows 11 blocks it with Smart App Control (no "Run anyway" either), open Windows Security, App & browser control, Smart App Control settings and choose Off. On some Windows 11 versions Smart App Control cannot be turned on again afterwards.
- Allow Merik on private networks when Windows asks, to use the lyrics and remote control web page.
The Windows build is not code-signed yet (code signing is planned), so these warnings can appear.
On all systems, choose a General MIDI SoundFont (.sf2) under Settings → Soundfont. Merik does not include one. MatrixSF_v2.1.5.sf2 and MS_Basic.sf2 are good free options, but any General MIDI SoundFont works.
Known limits
merik.local, port 80 and rendering with the internal SoundFont have been tested on macOS only. Some Android devices cannot resolve.localnames; use the IP address there.- A
.merikof 4 GB or more cannot be made. Transpose is not available for songs with stems. Linux is not supported yet.

Merik 0.7.1
Merik 0.7.1
A small release: Merik for Windows now comes as an installer instead of a zip. The program itself is the same as 0.7.0.
What's new
- Windows installer.
Merik-0.7.1-windows-x64-setup.exeinstalls Merik for your own account (no administrator rights needed), adds a Start menu entry and an optional desktop shortcut, and can be removed under Apps. Windows may still warn about an unknown app, because the installer is not code-signed yet. - Documentation and website: clearer steps for the Windows warnings (SmartScreen, Reputation-based protection and Smart App Control), SoundFont advice, and new download buttons.
Install
macOS
- Download the file for your Mac:
Merik-0.7.1-arm64.dmg(Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later) orMerik-0.7.1-intel.dmg(Intel, macOS 15 or later). Open it and drag Merik onto Applications. - The app is not notarized, so macOS blocks the first start. Right-click Merik.app, choose Open and confirm. If it is still blocked, run this in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Merik.app
Windows (64-bit)
- Download and run
Merik-0.7.1-windows-x64-setup.exeand follow the installer.

Merik 0.7.0
Merik 0.7.0
A big update for Merik, the live MIDI/audio backing tracks player for the stage: the player is now always reachable at http://merik.local, you can render MIDI to audio with Merik's own SoundFont, back up all your setlists, and the web page has a setlist view with jump buttons. There are also help pages for everything.
What's new
merik.localand port 80. Merik announces itself on the network (mDNS/Bonjour) asmerik.local, and the web page now uses the normal web port 80, sohttp://merik.localis all you type on the tablet. If port 80 is in use, Merik falls back to 8888. The IP address always works too. Settings → General shows the addresses.- Render with Merik's own SoundFont. Settings → Tools → Render MIDI files... has a new Sound source: Merik's SoundFont renders every family much faster than real time, without hardware or other software, and saves a
.merikper song. Merik can also do it from the command line (--render-internal, seedocs/render.md). Rendering through a hardware module or a software synth works as before. - Backup and restore of all setlists. Settings → Tools → Backup saves all setlists and songs (with titles, transpose and volume) in one file,
merik.backup, and restores it later after a warning. The MIDI and.merikfiles must stay in the same places; songs that cannot be found are shown in red. - Web page:
- A setlist view (with the key): the setlist that is playing, the time left, and Jump now / Jump next for every song.
- Sections from the MIDI file (Intro, Verse, Chorus, ...) at the top right, with a beat counter.
- A wait pill that counts down before the next line.
- The time left in the setlist, also in the app.
- Search and play next: a song that you play next now respects Auto play next, and the setlist continues where it was.
- Volume per song now goes back to 0 dB (or the song's own value) for every new song, just like the transpose.
- Layout: version, build, IP address and memory moved to Settings → General; the title bar only shows the web address. The default reverb is room 50, damping 50, width 50, level 10 (for new installations).
- Help pages in
docs/: playing MIDI files, audio files and both together, the web page, rendering, backup and the.merikformat, with new screenshots. The four demo songs now have sections.

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Merik.app
Windows (64-bit)
- Download
Merik-0.7.0-windows-x64.zipand extract it to a folder. - Run

Merik 0.6.0
Merik 0.6.0
A big update for Merik, the live MIDI player for the stage: you can now render MIDI files to audio through a hardware sound module or a software synth, search your setlists (also from the browser), insert a song without losing your place, and set a volume per song.
What's new
- Render MIDI files to audio stems. Settings → Tools → Render MIDI files... plays each MIDI file through a MIDI output (a hardware module such as a Boss DS-330, or a software synth in a host like MainStage, Logic or Bidule via IAC and a virtual audio device such as BlackHole) and records every family as its own stem (up to 7 passes), then saves a .merik per song.
- An interactive level test (piano and drums at full velocity, target about -6 dB) and a delay measurement. The delay is stored in the file (
delay.json), so MIDI and audio play together. - Choose any audio input device and channels (mono or stereo), a progress window with the song, the pass and the time left, and a Stop button.
- Options: keep the WAV files, FLAC in the
.merik, a General MIDI reset (off by default), and a demo render (the first 30 seconds of every track). Merik asks before it overwrites an existing result. - See
docs/render-external-module.md. On macOS, the first time you are asked to allow Merik to use the microphone (that is how macOS names an audio input).
- An interactive level test (piano and drums at full velocity, target about -6 dB) and a delay measurement. The delay is stored in the file (
- Search the setlists: a magnifier next to the song list (or Ctrl/Cmd+F) and, with the control key, in the web page (with your tablet's keyboard). From 3 letters you get a list of candidates, in the current or in all setlists.
- Play now or Play next: a "next" song waits until the current one ends and shows in the Next: field. Afterwards the setlist goes on where it was; the Continue button takes you back to that setlist and position.
- Volume per song (a difference in dB): a control next to the transpose control and a right-click submenu. Audio stems and the built-in SoundFont can go louder or softer; an external MIDI device gets scaled channel volumes. Transpose is now remembered per song as well.
- Click track on at startup is a setting (Settings → General), on by default.
- Web page: a neat "Merik is not running" message that reconnects by itself, and the title of a
.merikis shown correctly. - Setlists: right-click on the empty space below the setlists for New setlist. The Load button is gone; a folder icon next to "+" opens a MIDI file once. Compact transpose and volume controls and list tags, and
.DS_Storefiles are ignored.
Install
macOS
- Download the file for your Mac:
Merik-0.6.0-arm64.dmg(Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later) orMerik-0.6.0-intel.dmg(Intel, macOS 15 or later).
- Download
Merik-0.6.0-windows-x64.zipand extract it to a folder. - Run
Merik.exe. If SmartScreen warns about an unknown app (the build is not code-signed), click More info, then Run anyway. - Allow Merik on private networks when Windows asks, to use the lyrics and remote control web page.
On all systems, choose a General MIDI SoundFont (.sf2) under Settings → Soundfont. Merik does not include one. MatrixSF_v2.1.5.sf2 is a great free option, but many others exist.
Known limits
- Rendering through an external module has been tested on macOS only. Please report problems on Windows.
- With some software synths the drums stay silent after a General MIDI reset: leave that option off (the default).
- A
.merikof 4 GB or more cannot be made. - Streaming works for stems stored without compression. A slow or network drive can cause stutter: copy the file to a local drive.
- For an external MIDI device, a song volume above the maximum is not possible (only where the file's own volume is below the maximum).
- Transpose is not available for songs with stems. Linux is not supported yet.

Merik 0.5.1
Merik 0.5.1
A small update to Merik 0.5.0 with two big conveniences: Merik now runs on Intel Macs, and it can make a .merik file for you.
What's new
-
Intel Macs. There is now a separate download for Intel Macs,
Merik-0.5.1-intel.dmg(macOS 15 or later). Apple silicon keepsMerik-0.5.1-arm64.dmg(macOS 14 or later). -
Create a .merik file from inside Merik. Settings → General → Create a .merik file from a folder.... Choose the folder with your stems and Merik:
- shows what it recognised and what it ignored (by file name:
1-drums.wav,7-void.mp3,song.mid,click.wav,chords.json,lyrics.json, ...), - warns about stems of different lengths or sample rates, more than one MIDI file, or a missing MIDI file or tempo,
- converts WAV to FLAC if you want (lossless: 16- and 24-bit come back bit for bit identical; 32-bit float becomes 24-bit),
- saves the
.merikwithout compression, so it can be streamed and loads instantly, - and can add the new file straight to the current setlist.
This is much more stable than zipping by hand. The manual way is still described in the README and in
docs/merik-format.md, at the bottom, for the command line and scripts. - shows what it recognised and what it ignored (by file name:
Install
macOS
- Download the file for your Mac:
Merik-0.5.1-arm64.dmg(Apple silicon) orMerik-0.5.1-intel.dmg(Intel).
- Download
Merik-0.5.1-windows-x64.zipand extract it to a folder. - Run
- The Intel build has had little testing. Please report problems on Intel Macs and on Windows.
- A
.merikof 4 GB or more cannot be made (the zip format used here has no support for it). - Streaming works for stems stored without compression. A slow or network drive can cause stutter: copy the file to a local drive.
- Transpose is not available for songs with stems.
- MIDI out uses a portable output on Windows, so timing is less tight than on macOS.
- Linux is not supported yet.

Merik 0.5.0
Merik 0.5.0
Merik is a live MIDI player built for the stage. Version 0.5.0 adds recorded audio stems next to MIDI, a click track you can send to its own output, and a lot of polish around them.
What's new
- Audio stems (
.merikfiles). A.merikis a zip with audio stems per family (1-drums.flac,7-void.mp3, ...), optionalsong.mid,click.wav,chords.json,lyrics.jsonandtempo.json. No manifest to write: Merik recognises the files by name. Per family audio wins over MIDI, anything missing falls back to the MIDI file, so MIDI plus a live vocal stem, or a full recorded band, both work. The name after the number is shown on the family button. - Fast loading and low memory. Stems stored without compression in the zip (
zip -0 -j "song.merik" *.wav song.mid) are streamed from disk: a song is ready in a fraction of a second and uses about 17 MB per stem instead of the whole song. Compressed zips are decoded completely, in parallel, behind a progress screen that only appears when loading takes longer than half a second.docs/merik-format.mdand the README explain how to make a.merikon macOS and Windows, and how to convert WAV to FLAC. - Click track on family 8. Generated from the tempo and time signature of the song, sample-accurate with the music; or use your own
click.wav. Without a MIDI file or tempo there is no internal click and no beat display. Fader = volume, switch = on/off. - Separate outputs. Settings → Audio: a main output (stereo pair or one channel), the click on any other channel or pair (or click left / music right), and an output per audio-stem family. Handy with a multichannel interface or mixer, for example the click to the drummer only.
- Family labels and meters. Every family shows an AUDIO, MIDI or CLICK pill and a level meter, in the app and in the browser mixer. The song list marks files that contain MIDI and/or AUDIO.
- Update notification as a pill. A newer version shows as a dark-red Update available pill next to the song counter instead of a pop-up. Click it for the download. Skipping a version hides the pill.
- Memory in the title bar, spacebar = play/pause, Command/Ctrl/Alt-click on Lyrics opens the web page with your control key, and
.mid,.karand.merikfiles open from the Finder or Explorer. - Settings: a separate Soundfont tab, a new tab design and an audio device panel with all outputs of your interface.
- Families: 7 is now Others (FX and other), 8 is Click.
- Faster setlists: selecting a setlist is snappy again (saving the settings takes about 12 ms instead of 380 ms). Your existing setlists are converted automatically on first start.
- Web page: no "4/4" or empty chord bar when there is no tempo or no chords.

On both systems, choose a General MIDI SoundFont (.sf2) under Settings → Soundfont. Merik does not include one. MatrixSF_v2.1.5.sf2 is a great free option, but many others exist.
Known limits
- Audio stems, streaming and the separate outputs are new and mostly tested on macOS. Please report problems on Windows.
- Streaming works for stems stored without compression. A slow or network drive can cause stutter: copy the file to a local drive.
- Transpose is not available for songs with stems.
- MIDI out uses a portable output on Windows, so timing is less tight than on macOS.
- Intel Macs and Linux are not supported yet.
- After the first start, setlists are stored in a new format; an older Merik version no longer reads them from the same settings file.

Merik 0.4.0-beta.1
Merik 0.4.0 Beta 1
The first beta of Merik, a live MIDI player built for the stage. Big step since the alpha: Merik can now play recorded audio stems next to MIDI, and has a click track you can send to its own output.
What's new
- Audio stems (
.merikfiles). A.merikis a zip with audio stems per family (1-drums.flac,7-void.mp3, ...), optionalsong.mid,click.wav,chords.jsonandlyrics.json. No manifest to write: Merik recognises the files by name. Per family audio wins over MIDI, and anything missing falls back to the MIDI file. Mix MIDI and audio freely, for example MIDI plus a live vocal stem. Stems keep their name on the family button. See the README anddocs/merik-format.md; a test song is indocs/demo, andscripts/make-merik.pymakes your own. - Click track on family 8. Generated from the tempo and time signature of the song and sample-accurate with the music. Fader = volume, switch = on/off. Own click audio (
click.wav) is supported too. - Separate outputs. Settings → Audio: choose a main output (stereo pair or one channel), the click output (any other channel or pair, or a split of click left / music right), and an output per audio-stem family. Handy with a multichannel interface or a mixer, for example the click to the drummer only.
- Family labels and meters. Each family shows AUDIO, MIDI or CLICK and a level meter, in the app and in the browser mixer. The song list tags files that contain MIDI and/or AUDIO.
- Settings: a separate Soundfont tab, new tab design, and an audio device panel with all outputs of your interface.
- Spacebar is play/pause. Command-click (macOS) or Ctrl/Alt-click (Windows) on Lyrics opens the web page with your control key.
.mid,.karand.merikfiles can be opened from the Finder or Explorer ("Open with"). - Families: 7 is now Others (FX and other), 8 is Click.
- Faster: selecting a setlist is snappy again. Setlists are stored in a compact form, so saving takes about 12 ms instead of 380 ms. Your existing setlists are converted automatically on first start.
- Update notification (from the previous alpha): Merik tells you at startup when a newer version is available. Turn it off or check by hand under Settings → General.
Install
macOS (Apple silicon)
- Download
Merik-0.4.0-beta.1-arm64.dmg, open it and drag Merik onto Applications. - The app is not notarized, so macOS blocks the first start. Right-click Merik.app, choose Open and confirm. If it is still blocked, run this in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Merik.app
Windows (64-bit)

Known limits
- Audio stems and the separate outputs are new and have mostly been tested on macOS. Please report problems on Windows.
- Transpose is not available for songs with stems.
- Stems are loaded into memory when a song loads (about 11 MB per minute per stereo stem).
- MIDI out uses a portable output on Windows, so timing is less tight than on macOS.
- Intel Macs and Linux are not supported yet.
- After the first start, setlists are stored in a new format; an older Merik version no longer reads them from the same settings file.

Merik 0.2.0-alpha.2
Merik 0.2.0-alpha.2
The second alpha of Merik, a live MIDI player built for the stage. This release adds a Windows version and a beat indicator.
What's new
- Windows (alpha): Merik now runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). Download the zip, extract it and run
Merik.exe. - Beat indicator: the time signature (for example 4/4) is shown top right, with LEDs that follow the beat. The first beat has its own colour. It is in the app and on the web page, where it slides under the countdown when that is shown.
- Next song is queued: when a song in a setlist ends and Auto play next song is off, the next song is loaded and ready, but not started.
- macOS: the download now runs on macOS 14 or later (alpha 1 needed macOS 27). The disk image has a window with an arrow from Merik to the Applications folder.
- Built and packaged automatically on GitHub.
