Environments in AdventureEngine are constructed primarily of Areas. These are the smallest unit of space in AdventureEngine, and as such they generally represent a small region of physical space. Actors and Objects in the world are always located within a single area, and Actors can interact with anything in the same area as them without moving. Areas are connected through AreaLinks, which indicate a physical connection of any sort (not necessarily adjacency) from one Area to another. Areas can also be connected implicitly by placing linked objects (such as doors) in two separate areas.

Areas are always contained within Rooms. Rooms are generally used to describe a broader region of physical space (the obvious example is a physical room, but they can also be used for roads, forests, etc.). Ultimately, Rooms do not have much mechanical importance aside from being a means of grouping Areas under a common name.
