Polestar Client is a small desktop app that keeps Polestar's addons and the community guides from polestar.guide installed and up to date, so you never unzip a folder into AddOns by hand again. No account, no sign-in, nothing else on your PC touched.

This is the first release: a beta. If something's off, tell us on Discord or GitHub Issues.

Download

Pick the one for your computer from Assets below (not "Source code"):

Your computer Download
Windows (also Windows on Arm) Polestar.Client_0.1.0_x64_en-US.msi
Mac (Apple silicon and Intel) Polestar.Client_0.1.0_universal.dmg
Linux .AppImage (any distro) or .deb (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint)
Linux on Arm .AppImage or .deb

First launch:

  • Windows may say "Windows protected your PC", because the installer isn't code-signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway. On Windows on Arm the same installer runs through Windows' built-in x64 support.
  • Mac: the app is signed and checked by Apple; open the .dmg, drag Polestar Client into Applications, and open it.
  • Linux AppImage: make it executable (right-click > Properties > Allow executing, or chmod +x), then run it.

On first start it finds World of Warcraft: Forever by itself; if it can't, point it at your game folder.

What it does

Polestar's addons, kept up to date

  • Installs and updates Polestar, Polestar Recorder and LibForeverData straight from this project's GitHub releases.
  • Every download is checked against the checksum published with it before your AddOns folder changes. Your other addons are never touched.
  • Checks for updates on its own, or when you click Check for updates. You choose whether updates install automatically.

Community guides in one click

  • On any community guide's page on polestar.guide, choose Install with Polestar Client. The app comes forward, shows what will be installed, and one click puts it in.
  • The Community Guides page lists what you have: update, remove, or see what's new.
  • Optional automatic guide updates, off by default. When on, routine updates install a day after they come out, while the game is closed. If an update has a new publisher, adds or removes folders, or the guide was replaced by a different one, it always asks you first.

Careful with your PC

  • The list of community guides is signed by polestar.guide and checked by the app; a copy that was tampered with is refused.
  • Only guide files go into AddOns, and only into the guide's own folders. Anything else in a download (other files, links pointing elsewhere) stops the install.
  • If polestar.guide pulls a guide (broken, or taken down), the app turns it off or removes it and tells you why. A turned-off guide can be restored when the site allows it again.
  • Activity lists every addon change on your PC, newest first.
  • The app updates itself, and only accepts updates signed with Polestar's key.

Recording, if you want to help (opt-in)

  • Turn on sharing and the app uploads what the Polestar Recorder addon logs while you play: quests, kills, NPC positions, trainers and vendors. It helps us build better routes and fix Forever's quest data.
  • Character names are stripped before anything leaves your PC, and chat is never recorded. What we send shows you all of it. Pause or stop any time.
  • One switch: turning sharing on in the app also turns the Recorder on in game. /psrec off in game still wins.
  • Recording needs the new Recorder, which comes with the next Polestar update; until then the Status page says so.

And the small things

  • A small window that lives in your tray when closed, and starts with your computer if you want it to.
  • Works with WoW: Forever only.

Good to know

  • You don't need Polestar Client to use Polestar. CurseForge and the zips on GitHub keep working exactly as before.
  • No account, ever. If you turn recording on, uploads carry a random ID for your install, nothing more.
  • Report anything odd, from wording to crashes, on Discord or GitHub Issues. Screenshots help.

latest.json and the .sig files are for the app's built-in updater; you don't need them.
