v0.96.0

Windows Defender no longer removes the download. Defender's cloud
model classified the v0.95.0 Windows binary as
Trojan:Win32/Sabsik.FL.A!mland deleted it on arrival. Nothing in the
binary was ever malicious - that verdict comes from a machine-learning
classifier, and the pattern it matched was how v0.95.0 created its
Start Menu shortcut: it ranpowershell.exewith
-ExecutionPolicy Bypassagainst a script dropped into%TEMP%, which
usedWScript.Shellto write a.lnkinto the Start Menu, with the
console window hidden. Each of those is ordinary installer behaviour,
but together, inside one unsigned executable, they are also the
textbook description of malware installing itself. The shortcut is now
created by calling the Windows shell directly (IShellLink), which is
what the PowerShell wrapper was doing underneath anyway - no script, no
temp file, no spawned process.Worth knowing if you hit this on v0.95.0: the file only tripped the
check when it arrived from the internet, so a copy that was already on
disk kept working, which made it look intermittent. If Defender removed
yours, download again on this version. -
A development build can update to a release again. Running a build
from the source tree, the update check would offer the new version and
then refuse the download outright: "this is a development build, not a
release". The refusal was protecting something real, since installing a
release over your own build destroys it, but it left no way forward
inside the app. It is now a confirmation rather than a wall - it says
what will be overwritten, and proceeds if you agree. Only relevant if
you build ssh-tool yourself.
