I'm sure we could come up with something better looking than it is now. Of course there are generally no colorful cover images for research papers, so it could only be a variant on the "books" formatting. I'll do some thinking on the problem :)

Probably we can either add some generic icon for papers or a photo of the author. There's also the option to generate thumbnails from PDFs, but that's probably an overkill. Something along those lines.
