v1.6.0
PathTrial v1.6.0
PathTrial is a local-evidence-first network diagnostics MCP with a standalone Rust CLI.
Highlights
- Canonical evidence findings now carry
claim,evidence,probe_id,
confidence,limitsandnot_established. pathtrial fingerprintrecords IPv4/IPv6 exit identity, DNS chain, TLS
certificate SHA-256, local proxy hops and address-family fork.pathtrial fingerprint-diffreports deterministic changes between two
captures.- Three new diagnosis scenarios:
vps-unreachable,proxy-splitand
http3-fallback. - MCP grows from ten to twelve tools with
pathtrial_fingerprintand
pathtrial_fingerprint_diff. Probes remain default-deny.
Schema versions
- Scan report:
1.6.0 - Guided diagnosis:
1.1.0 - Canonical evidence finding:
1.0.0 - Path fingerprint:
1.0.0 - Fingerprint comparison:
1.0.0
Install
Choose macOS Apple Silicon, macOS Intel, Linux x86_64 or Windows x86_64 from the
release assets. Verify the adjacent SHA-256 file before installing.
- macOS and Linux: use
install.sh. - Windows: use
install.ps1.
pathtrial --version should print pathtrial 1.6.0.
Scope
This release does not include WHOIS lookup, port scanning, multi-region remote
probes, a GUI or automatic network repair.

The same values are available in each asset's .sha256 file.
v1.5.0-rc.2
PathTrial v1.5.0-rc.2
This is a release candidate, not a stable release. v1.5.0-rc.1 and its assets are unchanged and do not include a Windows archive.
Highlights
- Windows x86_64 archive
pathtrial-1.5.0-rc.2-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.tar.gzand a SHA-256 file, plusinstall.ps1. - macOS Apple Silicon, macOS Intel, and Linux x86_64 archives are published the same way.
- Local allow file for MCP, offline
pathtrial report render, localpathtrial baseline, andscripts/peer.sh. - Cursor plugin package under
plugins/cursor/pathtrial/. It is not listed on the public Cursor Marketplace.
Install
Verify the .sha256 file beside the archive before installing.
- macOS and Linux:
install.shfrom this Release, into~/.local/binby default. - Windows:
install.ps1from this Release. It copiespathtrial.exeto%LOCALAPPDATA%\PathTrialand does not change PATH, firewall, DNS, or routes.
pathtrial --version should print pathtrial 1.5.0-rc.2.
Limits
- Windows
--bind-interfaceis an error and does not use another interface. - Windows per-target routes, ICMP jitter, and Wi-Fi dBm are not established.
- Cursor Desktop install and the public Marketplace listing are not verified by this release.
- Probe tools stay default-deny.
mcp.jsonarguments remain["mcp"].
See Windows and AI integration.
v1.5.0-rc.1
PathTrial v1.5.0-rc.1 — Guided network diagnosis
This is a release candidate, not a stable release. PathTrial is a standalone, open-source Rust CLI for macOS and Linux with a local MCP server for Codex and Claude Code.
Highlights
- New
pathtrial diagnoseentry point with 11 scenarios:web,vps,latency,proxy,local,dns,tcp,tls,http,dual-stack, andudp-quic. - Evidence-grounded diagnosis across ten common network problem categories. Reports separate observed facts from possible causes, unproven causes, and recommended next checks; evidence references use
<source>:<probe_id>. - Latency statistics (TCP P50/P95/max), independent ICMP loss/jitter reporting, HTTP 4xx/5xx interpretation, and read-only local network interface / route / DHCP / Wi-Fi facts where available.
- 10 MCP tools with the new
pathtrial_diagnose. Existing startup target allowlist and default-deny rules remain in force. pathtrial_explain_reportsupports scan, probe, and guided diagnose report objects, validates real evidence references, and keeps diagnostic uncertainty visible.- Subprocess deadlines, cancellation and cleanup, TCP task payload reassembly, and HTTP Host/SNI behavior received further hardening and regression coverage.
Install
Choose the correct archive for macOS Apple Silicon, macOS Intel, or Linux x86_64 from this Release's assets. Verify its accompanying .sha256 file before installing. install.sh installs to ~/.local/bin by default without sudo.
Try pathtrial --version, pathtrial diagnose --scenario local, or pathtrial diagnose --scenario web example.com --format summary for targets you own or are authorized to test.
To use the MCP plugin, install the PathTrial executable first and ensure the Codex or Claude Code MCP configuration invokes the matching 1.5.0-rc.1 binary. MCP network targets are denied by default until explicitly allowed.
Known limitations
- A reported cause may be a hypothesis, not a proven root cause. ICMP loss cannot establish business-traffic loss or locate a responsible hop.
- Wi-Fi / DHCP observability is operating-system dependent and may be
SKIPorINCONCLUSIVE. - Real external dual-stack, UDP/QUIC and HTTP/3 reachability depends on the test network; a missing server or blocked local path does not by itself prove ISP filtering.
- Windows and Linux ARM64 binaries, a GUI and automatic repair are not provided.
See CLI documentation, MCP guide, and CHANGELOG for details. File reproducible issues with redacted logs at GitHub Issues.
