The first release of Sonic R (the 1998 PC version) on the PSP.
What's in it
- 60 fps: the game's logic still runs at 30 Hz, as on PC, and the PSP draws an extra frame halfway between two ticks. 30 fps is still an option.
- Drawn on the PSP's graphics chip: the track, the ground, the characters and the fog.
- Widescreen (16:9) in one-player races, with the HUD at the screen's edges, or 4:3 as on PC.
- A draw distance up to twice the PC's "Very Far".
- Options → Graphics sets the FPS, the draw distance and the screen shape.
- Music in ATRAC3, streamed from the Memory Stick; a race's files load in about 1.5 s.
- Fixes checked against the original
SONICR.EXE: the menus remember the chosen character and course, Radiant Emerald's start sign is back over the track, and the robots' exhaust flame flickers again. - The main menu has Grand Prix, Time Attack and Options: no multiplayer, since the PSP has one pad and no network play here.
How to install
This is only the game's program (EBOOT.PBP): it does not include the game. You need your own Sonic R PC CD. The README explains how to turn it into the folder the PSP reads, with Python and the scripts in this repository:
python tools/extract_cd.py "Sonic R (USA).cue"python tools/convert_music.pypython tools/make_ms_folder.py --eboot path/to/EBOOT.PBP- Copy
dist/PSP/GAME/SonicRintoPSP/GAME/on the Memory Stick.
Needs a PSP with CFW.
Sonic R belongs to SEGA (developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team). This port is built on jnmartin84's Sonic R decompilation; it may be shared, never sold.
