Auto-sign commits in Codespaces terminal?

At the bottom of the article there's a note that you may set VS Code to auto-sign all commits, but that you need to append -S to git commands in the terminal to sign them. When setting git config commit.gpgSign to true the git command produces an error.

Is there a way to get the git command in the embedded terminal to auto-sign all commits?

Where are you facing that error ? In the terminal or the VSCode in-built Git extension ?

In the terminal. Repro steps:

• Set up a fresh codespace
• Create a commit (works)
• git commit --add commit.gpgSign true
• Create a second commit:

error: gpg failed to sign the data
fatal: failed to write commit object

@bogosj so what do you want then ? Are you trying to enable the property commit.gpgSign ?

I have enabled the property commit.gpgSign, that's the crux of my question about the documentation for this feature.

I've tried enabling it on the repo I'm working in as well as my global-user config. When I do this a naked git commit -m "my message" fails with the error:

error: gpg failed to sign the data
fatal: failed to write commit object

@bogosj It's a problem at your side ig. I just tried it and it worked flawlessly.

It appears that removing

[user]
  name = "James Bogosian"
  email = "<myemail>"

Allows the commit.gpgSign value to do the correct thing.
