GitHub markdown ignores EXIF data on images

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this issue, but I've commonly found that EXIF data describing the proper orientation of an image is ignored when rendering images in a .md file. For example, if I take an image with an iPhone horizontally, Github will sometimes render that image in markdown upside-down. See this markdown file for examples, specifically the two images nearest the end of the file.

Apologies if I haven't posted this in the right place or if I'm overlooking something here. I'm not sure if markup's HTML rendering handles images.

markup doesn't handle images, no; this would be better off going to our support team.

While we're here though, let's have a look. Here's what we're seeing in README.md currently:

Likewise viewing them directly as blobs shows them in the above orientation:

I note that e.g. antenna.jpg when opened locally in Preview shows an image that's 90 degrees rotated clockwise of the above:

Finally, the EXIF data reads "Orientation: 6 (Rotated 90° CCW)":

So is the image as shown in Preview immediately above the desired display? (I can't tell just by looking at the photo … I need to get better at breadboarding or something.) I'm not sure why this would be happening but we can certainly look into it.

The image as shown in your instance of Preview is indeed the desired display. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have picked an image of the inside of a car to demonstrate orientation issues. I've had this issue with multiple GitHub markdown documents, and I'd be happy to submit a ticket to GitHub support if that's a better place to get help.

I was able to solve this solution by using a heavy-grade image manipulation program--Photoshop specifically--to rotate the image by actually transforming the pixels instead of attaching EXIF data that designates a rotate.
