DK94 Recomp 1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@gnome41 gnome41 released this 27 Oct 00:28

What's new in 1.3.0: stage select

  • START STAGE in the launcher starts new games at any of the 101 stages, from 0-1 (the original arcade game) to 9-9. Left/right moves a stage, Page Up/Down a whole world; --stage W-S on the command line.
  • You still see the opening, then the chosen world's map. Continuing a saved game is unchanged.

Earlier

  • 1.2.1: the freeze-timer cheat no longer stops the end-of-stage bonus count.
  • 1.2.0: GameShark and Game Genie cheats (launcher CHEATS screen, F8 in game).
  • 1.1.x: mod support (HD graphics, HD SGB border, music and sound) and an example pack.

Unofficial static recompilation of Donkey Kong (Game Boy, 1994) for Windows and Linux, with Super Game Boy colours, border and SNES sound, widescreen views, a launcher and controller support.

No game code or data is included. When you press PLAY, the player recompiles your own ROM to C and compiles it in memory with TinyCC (about 0.3 s). Nothing derived from the game is shipped or written to disk.

You need

  • The game ROM, dumped from your own cartridge: Donkey Kong (World) (Rev 1) (SGB Enhanced).gb (CRC32 F777A5D8)
  • (Optional) a Super Game Boy BIOS (.sfc), for the SGB's SNES sound effects

Downloads

  • Windows (x64): DK94-Recomp-1.3.0-windows-x64.zip. Run dk94.exe.
  • Linux (x86-64): DK94-Recomp-1.3.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. Run ./dk94 (./install-desktop-entry.sh adds it to your application menu). Needs SDL2 from your distribution (e.g. libsdl2-2.0-0) and glibc 2.34+.

Put the ROM next to the program, or choose it in the launcher. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS-1.3.0.txt.

Licenses

DK94 Recomp is MIT-licensed. TinyCC 0.9.27 (LGPL-2.1) is included as an unmodified shared library, with its source in each package. SDL2 is zlib-licensed.

DK94 Recomp 1.2.1

@gnome41 gnome41 released this 27 Oct 00:13

What's new in 1.2.1

  • Fixed: with freeze stage timer on, the end-of-stage time bonus never finished counting. The cheat is now a Game Genie code (00C-4BF-EAE) that stops the timer's countdown during play, so the bonus works normally. Saved cheat lists are updated automatically.

1.2.0: cheats

  • GameShark and Game Genie codes, managed in the launcher under CHEATS > MANAGE.... F8 toggles cheats in game; --cheat CODE on the command line.
  • Built in: infinite lives and freeze stage timer.

Unofficial static recompilation of Donkey Kong (Game Boy, 1994) for Windows and Linux, with Super Game Boy colours, border and SNES sound, widescreen views, a launcher and controller support.

DK94 Recomp 1.2.0

@gnome41 gnome41 released this 27 Oct 00:03

What's new in 1.2.0: cheats

  • GameShark and Game Genie codes, managed in the launcher under CHEATS > MANAGE...: type codes in, name them, turn them on and off. F8 toggles cheats in game; --cheat CODE on the command line.
  • Built in: infinite lives (010443DA) and freeze stage timer (016311C7).
  • Game Genie codes patch the ROM; the few recompiled functions that contain a patched byte run on the interpreter, so the codes work exactly as on the original game.

Earlier: example mod pack (1.1.1), mod support (1.1.0)

  • mods/DK94-Example: an original HD SGB border, HD timer digits and a new first-stage tune.
  • HD graphics packs, HD SGB border, music and sound replacement, several packs at once, dump tool for modders. See MODDING.md.

What's new in 1.1.1

  • Example mod pack in mods/DK94-Example: an HD Super Game Boy border, HD timer digits and a new first-stage tune, all original work. Enable it under MOD PACKS > MANAGE... to try mods, or copy it to start your own (see the "Example pack" section of MODDING.md).

1.1.0: mod support

  • HD graphics packs: replace any tile, sprite or background with high-resolution art (2x-16x), plus an HD Super Game Boy border.
  • Music and sound replacement with OGG or WAV files and loop points. The game's own effects keep playing under replaced music, and SGB SNES-side sounds can be replaced too.
  • Several packs at once, with a priority order, managed in the launcher under MOD PACKS > MANAGE.... F9 toggles mods in game.
  • Dump tool for modders: writes the tiles, border and audio requests to start from (for local use only; share original work).
