[2.6.0] - 2026-10-16

Added

  • repair: automatic initramfs repair on Linux. Rebuilds the initramfs of the kernel that failed to boot (dracut on RHEL-family and SLES, mkinitramfs on Debian/Ubuntu), validates the new image before it replaces the old one, adds a missing initrd line to the boot entry and regenerates GRUB. If the rebuild fails, the previous installed kernel is made the default; if there is no other kernel, the repair reports FAILED and leaves the disk unchanged. Changed files are backed up to /var/backups/gce-rescue/; kernels and modules are never deleted. Not attempted for LVM or LUKS root filesystems (#173, #181, #182, contributed by @kirtxn)
  • repair: automatic repair of a full boot disk on Linux. Resizes the boot disk (prompts for the size, default +5 GB, or --resize-disk-gb N), then grows the root partition and ext4/XFS filesystem in rescue mode and reports the largest directories. No files are deleted. With --quiet, the disk is resized only when --resize-disk-gb is given (#177, #178, contributed by @srijan116)
  • diagnose: detects GRUB file '/boot/initramfs-…' not found when GRUB wraps the line on the serial console, as seen on RHEL 9 family VMs that stop at the GRUB menu (#182, contributed by @kirtxn)

Fixed

  • diagnose: GRUB findings now show "Auto-repair (recommended)"; when GRUB only reports a missing initramfs, the fix steps describe the initramfs rebuild instead of a GRUB reinstall (#183)
  • repair --help listed filesystem repair, which is not available yet, and said Windows VMs cannot use repair; it now lists the supported fixes and the Windows --fix-script option
  • After an initramfs repair, boot verification waits up to 270 seconds, because a missing storage driver only surfaces after the dracut root-device timeout
  • Windows: rescue output, --fix-script help and the rescue VM instructions no longer assume the original disk is mounted at D:; partitions get the next free drive letter from D: onward. The bcdboot boot-repair hint now assigns a letter to the original disk's EFI partition first instead of targeting the rescue VM's C: (#125, #185, contributed by @rubensalmeida)
