XML1-recomp 1.0.1
XML1-recomp 1.0.1
- Long sessions no longer close the game. After about nine level changes in one sitting, 1.0 could shut down while loading the next level. Sound now follows the original Xbox rules: the game's loaded sound banks only take up sound channels while they are actually playing, so you can travel between levels for as long as you like.
Everything else is the same as 1.0. The full feature list and install guide are in the included Read Me.txt and on the 1.0 release.

Updating from 1.0
Close the game and replace X-Men Legends.exe with the one in the ZIP. Your saves, pc-settings.ini, build.ini and mods are kept. Saves from 1.0 load as before.
New installation
You need 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, about 4 GB of free space and your own X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO. The game data is not included.
- Create an empty, writable folder for the game, for example
C:\Games\X-Men Legends(not inside Program Files). - Extract the entire ISO into that folder with an Xbox ISO extraction tool such as extract-xiso.
default.xbeshould be directly inside the folder. - Extract everything in
XML1-recomp-1.0.1-win64.zipinto the same folder and allow it to replace files. - Run X-Men Legends.exe. The first launch prepares the game files once, which takes a few minutes.
Tested
One session changed level 24 times, through the Arbiter, HAARP, the Hive, the Astral Plane, New York, the sewers and the Danger Room, without closing. A fresh installation built from the World ISO and this ZIP completed first-run setup, the main menu, a story movie with subtitles and the first level as Wolverine. Compared with 1.0, only X-Men Legends.exe and Read Me.txt changed; every file is checked against the manifest.
Audio was muted during these checks, so the sound itself was not judged by ear. A complete playthrough, multiplayer and other PCs and GPUs were not retested. Please report problems on the Issues page and attach the logs from the game's build folder.
Unofficial project, not affiliated with the original game's publishers or developers. X-Men Legends and its artwork belong to their respective owners.
XML1-recomp 1.0
XML1-recomp 1.0
A native Windows version of the original Xbox X-Men Legends, recompiled from the game's own code and drawn by a built-in Direct3D 8 renderer. Bring your own copy of the game; this release adds everything needed to play it on a modern PC.
What it does
- Runs natively on Windows 10/11. One self-contained
X-Men Legends.exe: no emulator, launcher, Python or runtime DLLs. - Older PCs. Optimization for older machines has started with this release.
- HD widescreen. 1080p by default, with 720p, 1440p and 4K available. Windowed or full screen, with live FPS in the title bar.
- PC controls. Keyboard and mouse (WASD movement, mouse attacks and camera) and XInput controllers, fully rebindable per player in the new Advanced Options menu.
- Native PC menus. Options and Advanced Options for display, controls and audio, built in the game's own menu style over the 3D Cerebro scene. Quit is on the main menu.
- Expanded roster. Angel and Bishop join the original playable team in English, French and German, with combat abilities imported from X-Men Legends II. Up to ten costumes per character. Bishop's powers are a first draft.
- NewGame+ and the stash. Restart the story with your team's progression from the pause menu, and store items in the X-Men Legends II-style stash.
- Three languages. English, French or German text, chosen with
DefaultTextLanguageinbuild.ini. Movies and speech are in English. - Moddable. First launch unpacks the game into loose files and compiles its data to the later games' XMLB format, so files and packages can be edited directly.
modderModeinbuild.iniunlocks every character and costume. - HD texture packs. Drop upscaled PNG textures into a
texturepackfolder and the game uses them. Mipmaps are kept so they don't shimmer or flicker. - Audio. Original game sound, music and voice through your Windows audio device, including when you switch or unplug it.

Installing
You need 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, about 4 GB of free space and your own X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO (tested SHA-256 0a1ef03e57458144609906bbc2d44d2c26028cf704f4698ce0f1e61c34030b44).
- Extract everything in
XML1-recomp-1.0-win64.zipinto the same folder and allow it to replace files. - Run X-Men Legends.exe. The first launch shows a progress window while it prepares the game files. This happens once and takes a few minutes.
Updating an earlier version: close the game and extract the ZIP over your installation. pc-settings.ini and mods are kept. Re-apply any personal changes to build.ini.
Saves: the 1.0 roster is the original team plus Angel and Bishop. Saves made with English 0.9.x builds include the characters that were removed, so they don't load in 1.0; start a new game. Saves from the original Xbox game and from French or German 0.9.x builds still load.
The included Read Me.txt covers controls, settings and modding.
Making an HD texture pack
- Download
XML1-recomp-1.0-texture-template.zip. - Upscale the PNGs with any tool, by 2x, 4x or 8x. Keep every file name: the 16-character code before
.pngtells the game which texture to replace. - Put the results in a folder named
texturepackbesidedefault.xbe.
Delete a PNG to restore that texture, or set HDTextures = 0 in build.ini to turn the pack off.
Tested
A fresh installation was built from the World ISO and this ZIP, then played: first-run setup, intro and story movies with subtitles, the main menu, and the opening of the first level at 1080p. A texture pack made from the template loaded every texture the game requested, with no errors. Every file in the ZIP is checked against the manifest.
Audio was muted during these checks. A complete playthrough, multiplayer and other PCs and GPUs were not retested for this build. Please report problems on the Issues page and attach the logs from the game's build folder.
Unofficial project, not affiliated with the original game's publishers or developers. X-Men Legends and its artwork belong to their respective owners.
XML1-recomp 0.9.3
0.9.3 — HAARP texture and destruction fixes
- Fixed UI glyphs appearing on HAARP snowbanks and rocks (#20). The renderer now reads the game's actual texture bindings, including material changes that bypass the normal call observer.
- Fixed giant stretched polygons after destroying walls in the Research Facility Danger Room (#21). Restored missing arithmetic instructions used by the original animation code.
- Both corrections apply throughout the game; no map-specific or character-specific overrides were added.
Updating
Close the game and replace X-Men Legends.exe from the ZIP. All other packaged files are unchanged from 0.9.2; preserve your settings and mods.
For a fresh installation, extract your X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO, then extract the complete release ZIP beside default.xbe and launch X-Men Legends.exe. First-run setup prepares the loose assets. No adjacent runtime DLLs are required.
Validation
Reproduced both reported failures and inspected the corrected 1080p gameplay: the HAARP culvert with Angel and nearby combat, and wall destruction beside the Research Facility's blue machine. Added 120,600 arithmetic regression cases plus six checks using the observed failing operands, and native DX8 pixel tests for texture unbinding/rebinding. These passed.
Gameplay tests were muted. Audio, a complete campaign playthrough, and the reporters' hardware configurations were not revalidated.
The ZIP preserves all 1,772 files from 0.9.2, with only the executable changed. Every file was verified against the manifest; SHA-256 checksums are attached. The separate HAARP camera issue (#16) remains open.
XML1-recomp 0.9.2 hotfix
0.9.2 hotfix — 1440p and 4K output
- Added 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 to Advanced Options and manual pc-settings.ini configuration.
- Fixed startup failure when those resolutions were entered manually. Settings validation, the menu and the DX8 renderer now share the same supported modes.
- Resolutions above your monitor's native resolution remain selectable: the game renders at the chosen size and scales down to fit the window. Higher resolutions require more GPU performance.
- The default remains 1920×1080. Apply resolution changes and restart the game.
Updating
For an existing 0.9.1b installation, close the game and replace X-Men Legends.exe from the ZIP. All other packaged files are unchanged, so existing settings and mods can be preserved.
For a fresh installation, extract your X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO, then extract the complete release ZIP into that folder beside default.xbe and launch X-Men Legends.exe. Original ISO data is not included. No adjacent runtime DLLs are needed.
Manual 4K configuration in pc-settings.ini (not build.ini):
[PC]
Width=3840
Height=2160Validation
Tested headlessly with a real 3840×2160 render buffer on a 1080p monitor. Inspected native captures of the story FMV/subtitles, level-one gameplay and HUD, pause/Advanced Options, and return to the Cerebro main menu. Verified resolution cycling and settings save/load tests. The run was muted; audio quality, physical 4K monitors and other GPU configurations were not revalidated.
The full package retains all 1,772 files from 0.9.1b; only the executable changed. Manifest and SHA-256 checksums are attached. HAARP camera issue #16 remains open.
OpenXML1xbox 0.9.1 beta
Changes since 0.9 beta
- Fix shared flight ceiling enforcement so holding ascent cannot climb beyond the loaded map bounds.
- Include the costume, character and menu resources missing from the previous package.
- Include Bishop's XML1-native power tiers and model-based selection portrait. [ROUGH DRAFT ON POWERS]
- Include subsequent character metadata, save discovery, PC interface, sound-bank routing, contiguous-memory and startup repairs.
Installation
Requires the X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO. Extract the ISO filesystem, then extract the release ZIP directly into that same folder, beside default.xbe. Launch X-Men Legends.exe. First-run setup prepares loose resources, PKGBs and XMLB files while preserving the overlay. Existing installations can overlay the ZIP in the same way; back up modded files before replacing them.
The EXE is self-contained; no separate runtime DLLs or launcher are needed. The supplied build.ini retains modderMode=1 for beta testing.
Verification and remaining work
HAARP camera issue #16 remains open; performance on other hardware still needs feedback.
OpenXML1xbox 0.9 beta
OpenXML1xbox 0.9 beta
This beta expands the native PC build and its support for community character content.
Included
- Self-contained
X-Men Legends.exewith no adjacent runtime DLLs or renderer worker. - First-run loose-file extraction and XML-to-XMLB conversion.
- Native 720p/1080p output, PC options, keyboard and mouse controls, Quit menu entry, FPS display, performance logging, and audio device recovery.
- Angel, Bishop, and Sunfire roster content.
- Global XML2 character combat-handler support and PC ZSND support used by imported characters.
Beta status
- Imported-character power coverage remains under active validation.
- Cross-machine performance remains open pending tests on additional hardware.
- Multiplayer and extended audio testing remain beta-test targets.
Requires the X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO. The release archive is an overlay and does not contain the original game data.
0.8b
Windows beta for engine-level assessment, using the native Direct3D 8 renderer.
Includes 1080p widescreen output, keyboard/mouse controls and rebinding, XML1-themed native Options/Advanced Options, loose assets/PKGB support, first-run asset preparation, and main-menu Quit.
Requires your own X-Men Legends (World) Xbox ISO. Extract its Xbox filesystem first, then extract the release ZIP into that folder and launch X-Men Legends.exe. The executable prepares assetsfb.zip; it does not extract a raw ISO. Both architectures of the required Visual C++ runtime are included. See the README for setup and controls.
The 35-file payload was validated against a fresh ISO installation through movies, 3D menus, level-one gameplay, pause/resume, restart, Options/Advanced and Quit. All generated resources and payload hashes passed verification. Testing was headless and muted: audio fidelity, GUI setup interaction, physical device recovery and full-game/multiplayer coverage remain unverified.
This is a prerelease, not a full-game compatibility claim. The ZIP contains additions/replacements only; no ISO, saves or complete original game assets are included. The manifest and SHA-256 checksums are attached separately.
