Rate Limit Avoidance: A Smarter Approach
In the last release, I expanded the tool to assess whole-slide images alongside text and tables. Unfortunately, I discovered an undocumented rate limit in the Google Apps Script API. This limitation restricted the number of whole-slide image requests from a single documentId, with my testing revealing severe rate-limiting after just six consecutive slide image requests. The bottleneck was significant enough to prevent assessments from completing within the Apps Script execution time.
To address this, I’ve reworked the image extraction process. The tool now operates in batches using unique documentIds, effectively sidestepping the rate limit. The bonus? This batching approach also delivers a substantial boost in performance, allowing you to assess slides faster and more efficiently.
Langflow: Kudos Where It’s Due
Although it’s not my direct work, I want to highlight the incredible improvements from the Langflow team. Their optimisations have indirectly supercharged the Google Slides Assessor, enabling it to handle more requests with fewer resources.
I’m working on deployment scripts and instructions to make these enhancements more accessible. In the meantime, you’ll notice smoother and more scalable performance. Huge thanks to Langflow for their contribution!
Other Tweaks and Enhancements
- Bug fixes galore: I’ve squashed a variety of pesky bugs to keep things running smoothly.
- Refactored code: Some classes have been streamlined to better adhere to the single responsibility principle, improving overall maintainability and clarity.
