Screenshotty v1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 31 Oct 23:52

Screenshotty 1.1

Thanks to everyone in the Early AI-dopters community for the ideas in this release.

Scrolling capture

  • Choose Capture Scrolling Area from the menu bar, pick the area, then scroll down. Screenshotty joins the page
    into one tall image as you go: long web pages, AI chats, docs and Slack threads.
  • Sticky headers and footers appear once, not on every screen, and the scroll bar is left out.
  • Auto-scroll scrolls for you and stops at the bottom (needs the Accessibility permission).

Copy text

  • Capture Text copies the words in any area you pick, instead of a picture.
  • In the editor, Copy Text (⇧⌘C) copies the text from the screenshot. It's read on your Mac; nothing is uploaded.

Pin to screen

  • Keep a screenshot floating above every window while you work. Drag to move it, scroll or pinch to resize,
    double-click or press Esc to close, and right-click to copy, save, edit or fade it.
  • Pin from the editor, the floating preview (right-click), or choose Pin it on screen under After capturing.

Your own hidden words

  • Settings → Your hidden words: add client names, people or internal domains, and Screenshotty hides them
    along with emails, API keys and card numbers, including with Auto-hide.
  • Command line: --hide "Acme Corp, Jane Doe".

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Oct 02:27

Screenshotty 1.0

Beautiful, perfectly centred screenshots for your Mac. Free and open source.

New: it keeps itself up to date

  • When a new version is out you get a notification and an Update to Screenshotty … item in the menu bar menu.
    One click shows what's new and installs it. There's also Check for Updates… and a switch in Settings.
  • Updates are signed, so your Mac only accepts genuine releases, and Screen Recording permission carries over.

Easier to install

Fixes

  • Turning Auto-hide off now uncovers sensitive info again, and there's a Show button once it's hidden.
  • Arrows, boxes and labels land exactly where you draw them, even when the export is enlarged.
  • Typing a new label no longer restyles the previous one, and a deleted label stays deleted.
  • Keyboard shortcuts keep working after typing in the address or watermark field.
  • The smart picker works properly across several displays.
  • Phone photos (JPEG/HEIC) are no longer sideways, and vivid Display P3 colours stay vivid.
  • The iPhone mockup's Dynamic Island never covers content in landscape.
  • A mostly blank capture is no longer shrunk to a single mark.
  • Shared style files can't freeze the app with extreme values.
  • Instant copy and save no longer pause the app; batch export keeps files that share a name.
  • Smaller fixes to shortcuts, launch at login, the menu bar menu and permission prompts.

If you're on 0.6.1 or older, install this version by hand once (download, or the one-line installer).
From here on, updates come to you.

Screenshotty v0.6.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Oct 00:16

Smart selection finds web page sections

  • Sections from the page itself. Browsers leave most layout blocks out of the Accessibility data, so the picker now also finds sections the way you see them: by the empty gutters between them. Cards (with their fill and rounded shape), columns, sidebars, rows and paragraphs are all found, nested from the whole page down. Scroll or ↑ ↓ to step between them; dragged edges snap to them too.
  • More detail from Chromium browsers and Electron apps. Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Slack, Notion and VS Code are asked to share their page structure when the picker opens, so labelled elements inside pages can be locked onto.

Works in every app, with or without Accessibility permission.

Smart selection

Press ⌘⇧2 and the screen freezes. The selection glides onto whatever is under your pointer: a paragraph, a panel, a button, a whole window.

  • Click to capture it. Whole windows come out on their own, with clean transparent corners.
  • Scroll or press ↑ ↓ for the bigger container or a smaller element.
  • Drag your own area; its edges snap to nearby windows and text.
  • Space picks whole windows, Esc cancels.

Turn on smart selection (Accessibility permission) from the hint bar or Settings so it can find individual interface elements. Without it, it locks onto text blocks and windows. The macOS picker is still available in Settings.

Faster editor

  • Esc closes the editor (backing out of a crop, a label or a selection first).
  • ⌘↩ copies and closes: ⌘⇧2, click, ⌘↩.

Fixed

  • After a capture, macOS no longer switches you to a different desktop. Screenshotty stays a menu bar app while editing; a Dock icon is optional in Settings.

Install

Built for teams

  • Text labels and numbered steps. Press T to place a label on a colour pill, or N to drop numbered steps that renumber themselves. Small, medium and large sizes; double-click a label to edit it.
  • Brand kit. Add your logo, name and brand colours in Settings. Turn on a watermark in the editor, and brand colours come first in backgrounds and annotation colours.
  • Shareable styles. Right-click any style and choose Export Style: the file carries its logo and images, and a double-click adds it on a teammate's Mac.
  • Team styles folder. Point Screenshotty at a shared folder (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, a git repo) in Settings. Every style in it shows up for everyone, with a team badge, and updates automatically.
  • Re-editable projects. ⌥⌘S saves a .screenshotty file that reopens with the crop, annotations and style still editable.

Mockups, rebuilt

  • MacBook and iPhone keep their real screen shapes. Screen-shaped shots fill the display, windows sit on a Mac desktop with the notch, wide shots turn the iPhone landscape, and tall ones get an iOS status bar and home indicator.
  • Glass is now real frosted glass; Hairline is a crisp double edge.

Cleaner editor

  • Captures open straight in the editor (the floating preview is an option in Settings). Reopening the app starts a capture.
  • Style cards preview your screenshot in each style, in one compact row.
  • ⌘Z undoes style, crop and annotation changes.
  • Starts on Select; colours appear only when they apply; hold the eye button to compare; drag the preview straight into any app.
  • Save has a menu for Save As and Save Project; automatic fixes collapse into a small chip.

Command line

  • Render projects (screenshotty render guide.screenshotty) and shared style files (--style-file).
  • New --watermark, --logo and --watermark-position options.

New

  • Crop. Press C in the editor to choose exactly which part of the capture to show. Drag any edge or corner, or drag the box to move it. Return applies, Esc cancels. Annotations stay on their content.
  • Cut-off content is removed automatically. When the capture edge cuts through something, like half a column of sidebar labels, that strip is cropped away and the rest is re-centred. Tight crops of text and solid sidebars are left alone, and your own crop always wins.

Screenshotty v0.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 09:24

Fixed

  • Quick preview showed only the background. After a capture, the floating preview card (and its Copy, Save and drag-out) could show just the background with no screenshot. Captures were read lazily from a temporary file that was already deleted. Images are now loaded fully into memory, so the screenshot always appears.

Install

Screenshotty v0.3.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 09:06

New

  • Never leak a secret. Every capture is checked on your Mac for emails, API keys, tokens, card and phone numbers and IP addresses. Nothing is uploaded. Hide them in one click with a solid bar or blur. Turn on Auto-hide once and every later capture is covered automatically.
  • Styles. One-click looks for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, product launches, mobile apps, MacBook shots and docs. Each has an exact export size, so 16:9 at 1920 is exactly 1920×1080. Save your own look as a style too.
  • Batch Export. Apply one style to a whole set of screenshots at once.
  • Browser frames and mockups. A browser window with your URL in the address bar, or a MacBook or iPhone around the screenshot. They combine, like a browser on a MacBook.
  • Quick preview. After each capture a card slides in with Copy, Save, Edit and drag-out.
  • Fixes sloppy captures. Slivers of desktop or neighbouring windows are cut off the edges automatically. Hold Compare to see the original.
  • Recent backgrounds. Images you've used as backgrounds stay one click away.

Improved

  • Smart backgrounds are on by default and follow the screenshot's main accent colour.
  • Auto canvases never post as thin strips.
  • Small captures are enlarged pixel-for-pixel on export so text stays sharp.
  • CLI: --style, --device, --url, --width and --redact.

Install

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/harrison-bbb/screenshotty/main/scripts/install.sh | bash

Or download Screenshotty.dmg below.

Screenshotty v0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 08:08

New

  • Annotations. Draw arrows and highlight boxes, blur areas, or redact them with a solid bar. Shortcuts: V select, A arrow, B box, U blur, R redact. Move, recolour, delete (⌫), undo (⌘Z) and redo (⇧⌘Z). Marks stay pinned to your content when you change trim, margins or background.
  • Smart backgrounds. A new Smart tab builds Vibrant, Mesh, Pastel and Dark backgrounds from each screenshot's own accent colours. Pick one and every new capture gets its own matched version. Also available in the CLI as --smart.
  • Drag handle. Drag the new handle next to Save to drop the image into Finder, Slack and other apps.

Improved

  • Balanced margins. Tight captures get an even inner margin in their own background colour, so text is never cropped flush or clipped by rounded corners. Adjust it with the new Inner margin slider.
  • Window title bar. With Light or Dark window chrome on, the corner radius is capped so the title bar and traffic lights are never cut off.
