Staypaw 1.0: nothing takes your keyboard. The first release.

Try it

  1. Run staypaw-setup-win-x64.exe. The paw appears in your tray.
  2. Click into the app you care about, then right-click the paw and pick Protect followed by its name.
  3. Let something take focus. Focus comes straight back, and the tray menu names the app that took it.

What's in it

  • Protected app: nothing takes focus from it unless you click or Alt+Tab away, even while you're idle.
  • Held keys: a key you press during a steal never reaches the stealer. It goes to your window once focus is back.
  • Stealers by name: the tray menu shows the last and the busiest, and the focus log lists every focus change.
  • Start with Windows: on from the first launch, with a toggle in the tray menu.

Heads-up

  • Keys meant for your protected app are dropped, not replayed, as they would be for a game, in case it is one.
  • No updates by itself: Staypaw has no networking code, so it never checks for new versions. Watch this repo's releases.
  • Not on winget yet. The package goes in after this release.
  • Administrator apps: Staypaw runs without admin rights, so it can't take focus back from an app that has them. It logs those steals.

Thanks

To NoFocusSteal, whose watcher and steal test Staypaw's are ported from, and to everyone who described their steals in PowerToys #65.
