Problem with 4.18 dependencies on Mint 19/Ubuntu 18.04 #2

4.18 version of your kernel, specifically headers is missing libncursesw6 and libtinfo6, which don't exist for Cosmic. https://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=libncurses&searchon=names&subword=1&version=breezy&release=all
I don't understand the problem as "normal" 4.18 or newer kernels don't have those problems. Do you have any idea how to fix it, or at least could you update your batch file to install kernel 4.17 on Mint 19 and Ubuntu 18.04.

For the time being, you can download the 4.17 kernel from the releases-page here (just sudo dpkg -i the two .deb-files)

I downgraded the script to install 4.17 as long as this isn't working.
btw, these packages seem to exist in cosmic:

There could be something in the build-config that changed from 4.17 to 4.18, that requires these libraries. If so, then it happened in this commit

I'm pretty sure to have found the cause of this problem.
in this script, it is being checked if libncursesw (which depends on libtinfo) is available. If so, it will be used. If not, it tries to fall back to libncurses (without the w).

The thing that changed between my 4.17 compilation and the 4.18 compilation is the host system i used.

i used an ubuntu system to compile 4.17, and a debian system to compile 4.18. fortunately, i still have both systems here, so i checked what was installed where, and as it turns out, libncursesw is available on the debian system, but is not available on the ubuntu system.

So what needs to be done is probably to tell the script to use libncurses, even if libncursesw exists.

Btw., i can reproduce your error on a VM, so i will recompile with these changes, and if it works, update the release and re-enable 4.18 in the install script

ok, this was not it, the header deb-package still requires libncursesw when being built using debian. I'll probably have another look at it at the weekend

@aaguilarjimenez not yet. I haven't had too much time on my hands the last couple of days. I'm pretty sure, that it would work, if i were to build the kernel on a ubuntu machine, but i'd prefer to build it on my main (debian) machine.

But i actually do have some time right now, and could take another look

ok, progress. the problem is not with libncursesw6 vs libncurses6, but with libncursesw6 vs libncursesw5

The problem seems to be, that i have installed linbcurses-dev version 6.1 on my debian system, which has dependencies on libncursesw6 and libtinfo6.

Now i need to somehow tell it to use an older version of libncurses-dev. As can be seen here, version 6.0 only requires libncurses5 and libtinfo5

might setup an Ubuntu-System just fur building the kernel tomorrow. Though not ideal, this seems to be the easiest way (for me at least) to build the kernel so it "just works" for everyone

@heikomat thank you for taking the time to fix this. I have a Ubuntu machine and I could build the kernel for you. I have never done anything related to the kernel before so instructions would be nice :).

@NoeelMoeskops setting up the ubuntu machine is not a problem, would've just been nice to be able to build it using my main (debian) machine.

If you however want to build the kernel yourself so you don't have to wait until i do, here are the instructions i use to build the kernel (they work for ubuntu and debian)

i'm actually currently tinkering with compiling inside an ubuntu docker-container :D

I got it to build the kernel (even on my mac) but the docker container run out of space just before finishing (configured it with not enough space). So i'll test tomorrow if the .deb-files it produces are actually working

ok, i successfully build the kernel inside the docker container, and updated the files in the 4.18 release here

I tested them on my E200HA on debian, and on an ubuntu-vm, but not on an ubuntu on an E200HA.

@NoeelMoeskops would you be able to quickly test this?

@heikomat running the kernel and it seems to work, no failed dependency or whatever in the console output when installing.

i now made this 4.18 kernel the one that gets installed by the installer-script (see this change)

This issue should be solved by that change. If you still encounter installations problems, let me know :)

When netvsc device is removed it can call reschedule in RCU context.
This happens because canceling the subchannel setup work could (in theory)
cause a reschedule when manipulating the timer.

To reproduce, run with lockdep enabled kernel and unbind
a network device from hv_netvsc (via sysfs).

Resolve this by getting RTNL earlier. This is safe because the subchannel
work queue does trylock on RTNL and will detect the race.

Directories and inodes don't necessarily need to be in the same lockdep
class.  For ex, hugetlbfs splits them out too to prevent false positives
in lockdep.  Annotate correctly after new inode creation.  If its a
directory inode, it will be put into a different class.

This should fix a lockdep splat reported by syzbot:

While reading block, it is possible that io error return due to underlying
storage issue, in this case, BH_NeedsValidate was left in the buffer head.
Then when reading the very block next time, if it was already linked into
journal, that will trigger the following panic.

This change has the following effects, in order of descreasing importance:

1) Prevent a stack buffer overflow

2) Do not append an unnecessary NULL to an anyway binary buffer, which
   is writing one byte past client_digest when caller is:
   chap_string_to_hex(client_digest, chap_r, strlen(chap_r));

The latter was found by KASAN (see below) when input value hes expected size
(32 hex chars), and further analysis revealed a stack buffer overflow can
happen when network-received value is longer, allowing an unauthenticated
remote attacker to smash up to 17 bytes after destination buffer (16 bytes

While vfio_ccw_mdev_{write|read} validates that the input position/count
does not run over the ccw_io_region struct, the usercopy code that does
copy_{to|from}_user doesn't necessarily know this. It sees the variable
length and gets worried that it's affecting a normal kmalloc'd struct,
and generates the above warning.

Adjust how the ccw_io_region is alloc'd with a whitelist to remove this
warning. The boundary checking will continue to do its thing.

inlined frames and use a fallback '??' function name instead.

While this crash was originally reported by Hadrien for rust code, I can
now also reproduce it with trivial C++ code. Indeed, it seems like
libbfd fails to interpret the debug information for the inline frame
symbol name:

The reason is that the node timer handler sometimes needs to delete a
node which has been disconnected for too long. To do this, it grabs
the lock 'node_list_lock', which may at the same time be held by the
generic node cleanup function, tipc_node_stop(), during module removal.
Since the latter is calling del_timer_sync() inside the same lock, we
have a potential deadlock.

We fix this letting the timer cleanup function use spin_trylock()
instead of just spin_lock(), and when it fails to grab the lock it
just returns so that the timer handler can terminate its execution.
This is safe to do, since tipc_node_stop() anyway is about to
delete both the timer and the node instance.

We can concurrently try to open the same sub-channel from 2 paths:

path #1: vmbus_onoffer() -> vmbus_process_offer() -> handle_sc_creation().
path #2: storvsc_probe() -> storvsc_connect_to_vsp() ->
	 -> storvsc_channel_init() -> handle_multichannel_storage() ->
	 -> vmbus_are_subchannels_present() -> handle_sc_creation().

They conflict with each other, but it was not an issue before the recent
commit ae6935e ("vmbus: split ring buffer allocation from open"),
because at the beginning of vmbus_open() we checked newchannel->state so
only one path could succeed, and the other would return with -EINVAL.

After ae6935e, the failing path frees the channel's ringbuffer by
vmbus_free_ring(), and this causes a panic later.

Commit ae6935e itself is good, and it just reveals the longstanding
race. We can resolve the issue by removing path #2, i.e. removing the
second vmbus_are_subchannels_present() in handle_multichannel_storage().

BTW, the comment "Check to see if sub-channels have already been created"
in handle_multichannel_storage() is incorrect: when we unload the driver,
we first close the sub-channel(s) and then close the primary channel, next
the host sends rescind-offer message(s) so primary->sc_list will become
empty. This means the first vmbus_are_subchannels_present() in
handle_multichannel_storage() is never useful.

It was observed that a process blocked indefintely in
__fscache_read_or_alloc_page(), waiting for FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP
to be cleared via fscache_wait_for_deferred_lookup().

At this time, ->backing_objects was empty, which would normaly prevent
__fscache_read_or_alloc_page() from getting to the point of waiting.
This implies that ->backing_objects was cleared *after*
__fscache_read_or_alloc_page was was entered.

When an object is "killed" and then "dropped",
FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP is cleared in fscache_lookup_failure(), then
KILL_OBJECT and DROP_OBJECT are "called" and only in DROP_OBJECT is
->backing_objects cleared.  This leaves a window where
something else can set FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP and
__fscache_read_or_alloc_page() can start waiting, before
->backing_objects is cleared

There is some uncertainty in this analysis, but it seems to be fit the
observations.  Adding the wake in this patch will be handled correctly
by __fscache_read_or_alloc_page(), as it checks if ->backing_objects
is empty again, after waiting.

Customer which reported the hang, also report that the hang cannot be
reproduced with this fix.

UBIFS's recovery code strictly assumes that a deleted inode will never
come back, therefore it removes all data which belongs to that inode
as soon it faces an inode with link count 0 in the replay list.
Before O_TMPFILE this assumption was perfectly fine. With O_TMPFILE
it can lead to data loss upon a power-cut.

Consider a journal with entries like:

2: inode X (nlink = 0) /* inode was changed, xattr, chmod, … */
3: inode X (nlink = 1) /* inode was re-linked via linkat() */

Upon replay of entry #2 UBIFS will drop all data that belongs to inode X,
this will lead to an empty file after mounting.

As solution for this problem, scan the replay list for a re-link entry
before dropping data.

The code uses a bitmap to check for duplicate tokens during parsing, and
that doesn't work at all for the negative Opt_err token case.

There is absolutely no reason to make Opt_err be negative, and in fact
it only confuses things, since some of the affected functions actually
return a positive Opt_xyz enum _or_ a regular negative error code (eg
-EINVAL), and using -1 for Opt_err makes no sense.

There are similar problems in ima_policy.c and key encryption, but they
don't have the immediate bug wrt bitmap handing, and ima_policy.c in
particular needs a different patch to make the enum values match the
token array index.  Mimi is sending that separately.

This patch set contains three fixes for the vxlan driver.

Patch #1 fixes handling of offload mark on replaced VXLAN FDB entries. A
way to trigger this is to replace the FDB entry with one that can not be
offloaded. A future patch set should make it possible to veto such FDB
changes. However the FDB might still fail to be offloaded due to another
issue, and the offload mark should reflect that.

Patch #2 fixes problems in __vxlan_dev_create() when a call to
rtnl_configure_link() fails. These failures would be tricky to hit on a
real system, the most likely vector is through an error in vxlan_open().
However, with the abovementioned vetoing patchset, vetoing the created
entry would trigger the same problems (and be easier to reproduce).

Patch #3 fixes a problem in vxlan_changelink(). In situations where the
default remote configured in the FDB table (if any) does not exactly
match the remote address configured at the VXLAN device, changing the
remote address breaks the default FDB entry. Patch #4 is then a self
test for this issue.

Commit 32a5ad9 ("sysctl: handle overflow for file-max") hooked up
min/max values for the file-max sysctl parameter via the .extra1 and
.extra2 fields in the corresponding struct ctl_table entry.

Unfortunately, the minimum value points at the global 'zero' variable,

If xace hardware reports a bad version number, the error handling code
in ace_setup() calls put_disk(), followed by queue cleanup. However, since
the disk data structure has the queue pointer set, put_disk() also
cleans and releases the queue. This results in blk_cleanup_queue()

Fix the problem by setting the disk queue pointer to NULL before calling
put_disk(). A more comprehensive fix might be to rearrange the code
to check the hardware version before initializing data structures,
but I don't know if this would have undesirable side effects, and
it would increase the complexity of backporting the fix to older kernels.

probably should not have been created with this flag in the first place.

Patch #5 fixes a regression where an IP address cannot be assigned to a
VRF upper due to erroneous MAC validation check. Patch #6 adds a test
case.

Patch #7 adjusts Spectrum-2 shared buffer configuration to be compatible
with Spectrum-1. The problem and fix are described in detail in the
commit message.

Please consider patches #1-#5 for 5.0.y. I verified they apply cleanly.

By calling maps__insert() we assume to get 2 references on the map,
which we relese within maps__remove call.

However if there's already same map name, we currently don't bump the
