Smoother streets, fairer rivals and town events that feel special.

Downloads

  • Windows: MtCrankmore-windows-x86_64.zip. Unzip and run MtCrankmore-windows-x86_64.exe.
  • macOS: MtCrankmore-macos.zip (universal, ad-hoc signed). Unzip, then right-click the app and choose Open the first time. If macOS says it is "damaged", run xattr -cr "Mt. Crankmore.app" once in Terminal.
  • Linux: MtCrankmore-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. Extract it, then chmod +x MtCrankmore-linux-x86_64 and run it.

What's in 0.8.3

  • No more breaks in the road. Junctions are paved all the way across, so no wedge of grass or snow shows where two roads meet at an angle.
  • Fairer rivals: they ride the same share of your FTP in town as they do in races.
  • Town events come round a quarter as often, so each one feels special. The busker now walks, and performers, markets and movie night stay off the street.
  • Strava: your ride stays in memory until you post it, so nothing is left on disk if you quit without posting.

Fixes the Bluetooth helper crashing on macOS.

What's in 0.8.2

  • macOS: no more "Python quit unexpectedly" when connecting a trainer. The app now tells macOS it uses Bluetooth, so the first connect asks for Bluetooth permission instead of the helper being shut down. If you said no before, turn it on under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth.
  • Controls menu: when a remap is refused or moves a key from another action, the menu says so. Holding Shift/Ctrl/Alt/Cmd waits for the next key. Pressing a key on a controller remap screen explains why it was ignored.

Now with steering controls.

Downloads

  • Windows: MtCrankmore-windows-x86_64.zip. Unzip and run MtCrankmore.exe.

What's in 0.8.1 (new since 0.5)

  • A whole 90s town that lives. Day and night over an hour with street lamps, rain and snow. Dozens of happenings: a marching band, parades, fireworks, fires, ambulances, robberies, a construction site that orders pizza, chairlifts full of skiers, Santa on winter nights, seagulls and fall zombie kids. Nothing pops into or out of sight any more.
  • Challenges that pay: catch thieves and a runaway dog, race the hot rod or a kid on a BMX along a route with red arrows at the turns, pizza rushes, hill sprints and a mountain rescue, each at a share of your FTP.
  • Smooth turns: every car, truck, rider and townsperson turns through four in-between frames (made with PixelLab), summer and winter.
  • Mt. Crankmore climbs like Alpe d'Huez: 17 stacked hairpins with rock walls and drop-offs. Flour Run sweeps through long bends.
  • The bear: if it catches you, you wipe out and the ski patrol swaps your bike. 15 seconds gone.
  • Ride anywhere across the road, oncoming lane included.
  • More ways to ride: Bluetooth power meters and Wi-Fi trainers (Wahoo Direct Connect). A trainer that goes quiet reconnects by itself, and connecting can't be cancelled by an accidental press.
  • Fixes: vehicles that showed the wrong view (some drove backwards), the race TV moto riding backwards, smooth U-turns, a destination dot you can see on the summer map, lamps on the kerb, and art changes now show up when running from source.
  • Sprite viewer (tools/sprite_viewer/index.html in the source): browse every sprite and watch it turn.

The Wi-Fi trainer support is new and has only been tested against a simulated trainer so far.

Rollers, cool-downs and a bike with no brakes.

What's new in 0.5

  • The Fixie ($2000). Completely impractical, but utterly awesome. Stuck in gear 9: no shifting, and no brakes. Good luck with the traffic.
  • Flour Run has real terrain now: a climb, a dip, a flat, a descent, a bigger climb to the high point, and a long run back down, finishing level with the start.
  • Races don't just end. Every course runs on for a 400 m cool-down past the finish arch. Your place and time count at the line; keep rolling with your rivals and the results come up at the end of the road.
  • Rider sprite sheets. Riders can be drawn from pixel-art sheets in art/, falling back to the procedural bikes when there's no art (see the README).

Four seasons in Crankmore Village.

What's new in 0.4

  • Seasons. The village and Mt. Crankmore follow today's season, or pick one with Season on the title screen or in the pause menu (LEFT / RIGHT). Your choice is saved.
    • Winter: snow everywhere (roofs, pines, the race courses), bare trees, falling snow, a frozen lake with skaters, snowmen, skiers on the hills and townsfolk in bobble hats carrying their skis.
    • Spring: blossoming trees, grass full of flowers, tulip beds, butterflies, duck families on the lake and drifting petals.
    • Summer: as it was, plus people playing catch and frisbee, flying kites, picnicking (with pizza) and playing beach volleyball.
    • Fall: orange grass and trees, golden larches, falling leaves, pumpkins, leaf piles with kids jumping in, scarecrows and hay bales.
  • The rivals have something to say about every season.

Your rides now go to Strava.

What's new in 0.3

  • Strava. Every ride is recorded: distance, speed, power, cadence and altitude, plus the pizzas you deliver, the races you win and up to 4 screenshots. Link your account from title screen > Strava (one-time setup with your own free Strava API app; see the README) and the ride is posted as a Virtual Ride when you quit, or any time from the pause menu. The notes list your pizzas delivered and races won. Strava's API can't attach photos, so Add screenshots to the last ride opens the activity and the screenshot folder to drag them in. Power and cadence only come from a trainer: keyboard rides never send made-up watts.
  • No pizza box in races. You're racing, not delivering.
  • The Gravel Grinder is now the top bike at $8000. The bike shop lists bikes cheapest first.

Power-ups replace turbo, plus a new race, drafting and paddle steering.

What's new in 0.2

  • Power-ups instead of turbo. About 1 in 8 townsfolk, and spectators along the race course, hand them out as you ride past. Carry one at a time (shown on the WEEHOO) and press Y (or Space) to use it. Rivals grab and use them too.
    • Town: Pepperoni Portal (warp to the nearest shop with a pizza waiting), Bike Wrench (full repair), Walkie Talkie (a dancing pizza mascot blocks a rival).
    • Town and races: Pizza Frisbee (knock a rival within 5 m down for 5 s), Fire Socks (30% faster for 15 s), Breadsticks (grow huge and run rivals over), Dough Roller (climbs feel flat for 15 s, on the trainer too).
  • New race: Flour Run. 3 km of flower meadows, mostly flat with gentle rollers, about 10 minutes.
  • Drafting for everyone in races: ride 1-9 m behind someone and the same speed takes fewer watts (18% at 13 km/h, 24% at 17 km/h, 30% at 40 km/h+). A DRAFTING tag shows when you're in the slipstream.
  • Easier races and a new Ludicrous difficulty. Rivals hold about 40% / 50% / 60% / 80% of your FTP on Easy / Medium / Hard / Ludicrous.
  • Handlebar paddles move you across the road (in town and in races); the D-pad still picks turns.
  • Bluetooth helper: --record and --inspect modes to see exactly what your controller sends.

Downloads

  • Windows: MtCrankmore-windows-x86_64.zip. Unzip and run MtCrankmore.exe.

Changes since 0.1

  • The macOS build is now ad-hoc signed, which fixes the "damaged" message on Apple Silicon.
  • README: Mac first-launch note.

Mt. Crankmore 0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@hermeslohin hermeslohin released this 24 Oct 20:33

First playable release of Mt. Crankmore.

Downloads

  • Windows: MtCrankmore-windows-x86_64.zip. Unzip and run MtCrankmore.exe.
  • macOS: MtCrankmore-macos.zip (universal). Unzip and open the app. The build is unsigned, so right-click it and choose Open the first time.
  • Linux: MtCrankmore-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. Extract it, then chmod +x MtCrankmore-linux-x86_64 and run it.

The game works with the keyboard alone. To pedal a smart trainer, use Connect Trainer on the title screen. That needs Python 3 and an internet connection once, to install the Bluetooth helper.

Highlights

  • Title menu with Continue game and New game (New game deletes your save and starts you with $100).
  • Wider gear range (about 50% more each way).
  • Town-scale switchback course with jumps, logs, creeks and wildlife.
