First release of hexgrab, a tiny Windows color picker built with .NET 10 and WPF.
Press Win + Shift + H, point at any pixel, click, and the HEX code is in your clipboard. Enter also copies; Esc or right click cancels.
Downloads
| File | Needs |
|---|---|
hexgrab-win-x64.exe (~72 MB) |
Nothing, the .NET runtime is bundled |
hexgrab-win-x64-small.exe (~185 KB) |
.NET 10 Desktop Runtime |
Both builds pass the e2e test (tests/e2e/hexgrab-e2e.ps1) on Windows 11 at 125% scale.
The exe is not code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn on first run (More info → Run anyway). Verify with SHA256SUMS.txt, or build from source.
Known limitations
- Tested on a single monitor. Mixed-DPI multi-monitor is designed for but untested.
- Windows shell flyouts draw above the overlay.
- HEX only.
hexgrab is an independent implementation, written after studying the MIT-licensed PowerToys Color Picker with REA. No PowerToys code is included. See docs/rea-findings.md.
