Agent Skills
git task skills install teaches a coding agent, such as Claude Code, how to use this CLI:
addressing, --format json, task CRUD, config/automation, and cross-repo sync, all from
SKILL.md files embedded directly in the binary. No source checkout is required on the machine
running the install; the skill content ships inside the compiled git-task/gtask executable.
git task skills install # every detected agent's global skills directory
git task skills install --project # + this repo's .claude/skills, committed and shared via git
git task skills install --dir ./somewhere # install into an exact directory, nothing auto-detectedThree skills ship together:
- git-task: everyday task CRUD (new/show/edit/status/comment/label/link/delete), addressing, and the non-interactive gotchas an agent needs to know before scripting a command.
- git-task-config: per-repo configuration (address key, required fields) and the automation rules engine.
-
git-task-sync: push/pull, cross-repo registration, and aggregated
ls.
Without --dir, installation auto-detects known agent conventions under your home directory
(currently: Claude Code, ~/.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, detected by the presence of a
~/.claude directory). If nothing is detected, it still installs to that one known convention as
a sensible default, rather than doing nothing.
--project additionally installs into this repo's own .claude/skills/, which is ordinary source
under version control: commit it, and every clone of the repo gets the same skill content without
anyone running skills install themselves.
The bundled skills are, in effect, the terse version of JSON Output: they tell an
agent to always reach for --format json when parsing a result, to check ok rather than trust
the exit code alone, and to take an id from a prior command's output rather than reconstructing
one. If you're writing your own integration by hand rather than pointing an agent at git-task,
that page is the fuller reference; skim the installed SKILL.md files if you want the condensed
version an agent actually reads.
