Documentation unclear for reformats

I've seen this function used on a catalog but it is unclear to me what it does.
It's only described as reformat values on the help page, Looking into the tests has many with " works as expected" without explaining what is expected.
What is the purpose of reformats?

Thanks! The examples were somewhat helpful but wasn't sure if I was missing some more cases. I missed the vignette which describes more in detail the usage of the function. Thanks for the redirection.
