v0.9.1
New Super Mario Bros. U, native PC port, v0.9.1
The Wii U game rebuilt as a native program for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The download has no
game files, no game code and no keys: the installer builds the game on your machine from your own copy.
| System | Start |
|---|---|
Windows 10/11, x86-64 (windows-x86_64) or ARM64 (windows-arm64), Vulkan |
NSMBU.exe |
| macOS 14+, Apple Silicon | NSMBU.app |
| Linux, x86-64 or arm64, glibc 2.35+, Vulkan | nsmbu-launcher |
| Android 13+, arm64, Vulkan | android-arm64.apk |
Download the zip for your system, unzip it anywhere and start that file. The first start builds the
game once and can take a few minutes; later starts go straight to the game. The game, saves and
settings stay in the folder. On Linux you can also use the single-file .AppImage without
unzipping (Steam Deck included); it keeps them in ~/.local/share/nsmbu and ~/.config/nsmbu
instead (Ubuntu 24.04+: libfuse2t64, or --appimage-extract-and-run).
On Android, install the android-arm64.apk (android-x86_64 is for emulators and Chromebooks), open
the app and choose your game: it builds the game on the phone once, which takes a few minutes.
The installer takes a .wux/.wud disc image with its disc and Wii U common keys, a Cemu .wua
archive (no keys needed), or an extracted game folder. Supported regions and versions are in the
Compatibility table.
The builds are unsigned. On macOS 14, right-click the app and choose Open. On macOS 15 or
newer, use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway, and keep NSMBU.app inside the
unzipped folder. On Windows, choose More info > Run anyway when SmartScreen blocks the app.
To open the installer again, hold Shift while starting (macOS, Windows) or run
nsmbu-launcher --setup (Linux). Full install steps and controls are in the
README.
Changelog
Fixed
- Setup finishes on the USA or Europe base disc (#67).

Changelog
Added
- The installer can add a New Super Luigi U folder on the Keys screen, next to a disc image, or with an extracted game folder.
A Cemu archive that already contains the matching add-on installs it with the game. - Settings → Graphics has Async shader compile, off by default.
Turn it on so a burst of new shaders does not freeze the picture.
An object can be missing for a moment while its shader compiles. - Settings → Display has Stretch picture instead of widening the view, on by default.
Turn it off to keep the wider view on screens that are not 16:9. - Settings → Debug can add a Settings button on the world-map start menu.
It is off by default, and the menu becomes two rows of three the next time you open it.
Changed
- Vulkan starts in Vsync (smooth) when you have not chosen a presentation mode.
- A new shader keeps the last picture on screen until that shader is ready.
The shader you can see compiles before shaders that are off screen. - Each shader compiles once, and the shader cache stores that program once.
An existing cache still loads, then it is saved in the smaller form. - Courses draw faster when the frame rate is uncapped.
- The world map draws faster once the picture has settled.
- The hidden GamePad picture is not drawn, so the world map can hold a higher frame rate.
- The New Super Luigi U story-map notice does not appear at startup.
- The performance overlay shows logic steps per second above the frame graph, and shader recompile time with the CPU and GPU lines.
- The performance overlay frame graph is green when the frame time meets your frame rate, shows the line only, and keeps each hitch until it scrolls off.
Removed
- Lua mods and file-replacement packs no longer install.
The Mods tab installs Cemu graphics and shader packs only. Tno longer switches between 60 fps and 120 fps.
Choose the frame rate in the frame menu.Rno longer cycles the internal resolution.
Change it in Settings.
Fixed
- Phones and PCs whose Vulkan driver is 1.1 or 1.2, and has no dynamic rendering, can start the game (#63).
- Stretch picture instead of widening the view stretches the 16:9 TV picture into the chosen shape, such as 21:9.
The GamePad picture keeps its own shape. - 60 fps on a high-refresh display keeps 60 logic steps a second.
- Foreground grass and flowers follow the camera between frames, including an up or down pan.
That pan no longer crashes the course. - Foreground grass wave and sway follow the in-between pictures at high frame rates.
- The ground and bricks follow the camera between frames, so they stay smooth with pipes and enemies.
- The ground and the characters share one camera sample between frames, so the picture no longer jitters when the camera moves.
- The shader cache loads while the game starts, so the first frames no longer wait on that read.
- Crash recovery stays off until you turn it on in Save States.
A crash does not turn it on. - The performance overlay averages its numbers over the same two-second window as the frame graph.
The numbers refresh every half second, and the graph keeps scrolling when the frame rate drops. - A steady 60 fps no longer shows as 59.5 on the performance overlay.
- When New Super Luigi U is installed, the eShop prompt stays off.

Changelog
Added
- The performance overlay shows 1% low FPS in an FPS / AVG / 1% row.
Changed
- Controls always load from the controls file in your user folder.
- Install and first-run help in the online docs is grouped under user-facing guides; README install steps are unchanged on each platform.
- Mods and the Mods tab work on base-disc builds, not only on 1.3.0 update dumps.
- New desktop setup and release packages use a top-level
installer/folder.
Older release zips still unpacktools/installer/.
Fixed
- Windows on older Intel graphics no longer crashes on the title screen after the intro (#60).
- Quitting a course you opened from the map returns you on that course's node, with the world map still showing the world entrance.
- Opening a course from the map shows that course name on the loading card, and quitting frames the opened course on the world map.
- After an intro skip, quitting puts the map player on the course you opened instead of only the save start.

Changelog
Added
- Mods work on the USA and Europe base disc (title version 0), not only on the 1.3.0 update or combo packs.
- iOS and iPadOS build: the Metal renderer in a UIKit app with on-screen controls, game controllers, and hardware keyboards.
Picture-in-picture puts the GamePad picture over the TV picture, where it takes touches. - Press
Tin the game window to toggle between 60 fps and 120 fps frame interpolation (Vulkan SDL and macOS Metal). - Metal decodes BC1–5 textures on upload when the GPU cannot sample them.
Changed
- The performance overlay uses a clearer layout with labeled rows for output FPS, logic rate, CPU and GPU timing, and presentation settings.
Debug overlay sections are independent (output, graph, presentation, waits, and more).
It no longer repeats the GPU name, driver, and Vulkan version in the corner (those stay in Copy performance report). - Settings uses a compact header: tabs sit on the same row as the close button, without the controller help line under the title.
- Graphics card choice for the next start is at the bottom of the Graphics tab instead of Debug.
- In-between frames blend every player's head and course model animation with the camera.
Mario's head, Luigi, and both Toads move with the rest of the body instead of staying on the 60 Hz step.
Moving with the camera no longer leaves models half a step behind the view. - Setup and a full recompile pick up hook changes again, so fixes that rely on new hooks ship after you rebuild.
- A full recompile no longer stops on save-debug hooks after hook files change.
Fixed
- Boost Rush no longer crashes when a Mii is drawn before its shader exists, and Boost Rush on a USA or Europe base disc no longer crashes while the course loads.
- Android setup finishes translating when the phone's Python has no multiprocessing module.
It uses one process instead of stopping. - Course tiles stay visible on Metal when internal resolution is above 1x.
- World-map shadows no longer flicker at 120 fps.
The picture is taken on the in-between present, after the light maps are ready. - 120 fps no longer steps the camera backward on the in-between frame.
Changing the frame rate drops saved poses instead of blending across the gap. - iOS: the on-screen stick works while the GamePad picture fills the screen, as on the world map.
- The performance overlay frame graph uses green for good frame times and fills under the line correctly when a spike appears.
- The Settings close button sits higher in the header row.

- On 21:9, the title screen no longer shows a one-pixel bright column on the far right.

Added
- Settings → Saves shows a short preview of the real game save (files, world, lives, play time) and opens that saves folder from the top of the tab.
- The performance overlay shows average fps and logic steps/s, plus GPU and CPU timing.
Reset clears those averages; Copy performance report includes them.
Changed
- Wider and taller windows show more of the scene instead of stretching a 16:9 picture.
The HUD stays in its original frame. - Settings language and content-mod Restart relaunches the app, the same way as switching Metal and Vulkan.
- Setup precompiles shaders as part of install, repair, and update after the game is built.
Menu and Ready to play keep a Recompile shaders button to run that pass again. - Settings → Language lists only the text languages on the installed disc.
A USA dump shows English, French, and Spanish; a European dump adds the other European languages. - Settings tabs: Controls is first; Saves sits between Audio and Mods; Debug is capitalized.
- The window title no longer shows a live frame rate.
Use the performance overlay for fps. - The performance overlay no longer shows the renderer, scale, and frame-mode footer under the graph.
Fixed
- World-map shadows no longer flicker at 120/144 fps frame interpolation.
- 144 and 165 fps keep the rate you select when a frame runs early or late.
Late frames no longer restart the schedule and settle well below the selection.
Early world-map frames show on the next time slot instead of being dropped. - High frame rates keep normal game speed (60 steps a second).
Dropping every in-between frame no longer leaves the game running about twice as fast. - The Settings restart confirmation stays centered on screen.
- The performance overlay shows the frame rate once, above the frame-time graph.
