Koda 5.0 (versionCode 28)

Since 4.9, Koda has gained Last.fm scrobbling, Spin, the Hero player style, animated album covers, a visualizer and waveform seek bar, music playback speed, redesigned artist, album and playlist pages, a new playlist studio, scheduled backups, alternate app icons, a rebuilt video minimize animation and video Library, full live-stream quality selection, and fixes for crossfade skips, Bluetooth transitions, OEM widgets and long histories and playlists.

Last.fm

  • Added optional Last.fm scrobbling, off by default, under Settings > Last.fm.
  • Connect with your own Last.fm API key and shared secret, approved in your browser. Koda ships no credentials and never sees your password.
  • Music is scrobbled once you pass half the track or four minutes; videos are never scrobbled.
  • Plays made offline are queued and submitted when you are back on a network.
  • The Last.fm page shows your profile, total scrobbles and recent listening grouped by day.
  • Incognito and Local Only pause scrobbling, and turning Last.fm off clears anything unsent.

Spin and the Hero player

  • Added Spin: a wheel of songs you can flick or spin to choose what plays next.
  • Spin opens from a small die on Your Mix's Play button, or beside Play all in Spotlight.
  • Spin can draw from your mix, For you, liked songs or recently played. In Spotlight it opens on the songs the current filter is showing.
  • Added Hero, a new player style with the album art filling the top of the screen and a big play button in the art's own color.
  • The Hero play button is a rounded square while playing and a circle when paused.

Music player

  • Music can now play at a different speed. Open the three-dots menu in the player and drag the slider from 10% up to 200%. It snaps to 100%, and the reset button beside the reading returns to it.
  • The chosen speed is remembered across songs and restarts, and no longer resets when one track crossfades into the next.
  • Redesigned the player's three-dots menu: actions are now buttons and toggles instead of a list of rows, and it follows the app's color theme instead of mixing it with the album's colors.
  • Added a volume slider beside playback speed at the bottom of the three-dots menu.
  • The progress bar and its thumb now move smoothly instead of stepping once a second.
  • Lyrics are now set in Montserrat, with songs in other scripts keeping a font that can draw them.
  • The Canvas player now shows the album art in the upper part of the screen over a background built from the artwork's own colors, cropping less of the cover.
  • The Canvas player keeps its controls on screen instead of hiding them a few seconds after playback starts.
  • Save the current queue as a playlist from any player style's queue. The name is pre-filled with the date, and a queue holding the same song twice is saved with both copies.
  • The music player no longer goes see-through halfway through opening, and the mini player opens and closes with a softer motion.
  • Fixed tapping the artist name in the music player opening the Subscriptions feed or Home when the app was in video mode.

Motion artwork, visualizer and waveform

  • Album covers can now animate in the full player for albums that have an animated cover. It is off by default under Settings > Player > Motion artwork.
  • Added a motion artwork quality picker with Saver, Balanced, High and Max. Balanced is the default; High and Max are sharper and use considerably more data.
  • Motion artwork uses unmetered Wi-Fi only until you say otherwise, and pauses in Battery Saver, Data Saver, Local Only, Incognito, when animations are turned off system-wide, and whenever music is paused or the player is closed.
  • Animated covers step down to a smaller version when a device cannot decode the largest one, and songs without one keep their normal cover.
  • Added an optional visualizer under the progress bar in every full player style, with bars, wave and dots, three densities and a sensitivity slider, under Settings > Player.
  • The visualizer needs no microphone permission and records nothing; it reads the audio Koda is already playing.
  • Added an optional waveform seek bar under Settings > Player that shows the whole song's loudness as soon as it loads.
  • Songs on your device get their waveform instantly. Streamed songs are measured from the same audio they are about to play, on any connection, so it costs no extra data unless you skip away mid-song. Turning off music caching or Local Only stops it.
  • The seek bar now answers touch in most player styles: the playhead grows while dragging, and the bar ticks under your thumb as it crosses the waveform.
  • The seek bar's vibration follows the Haptics setting, and no longer buzzes every time the player is opened.

Lyrics

  • Added a Lyrics page in Settings: drag lyrics sources into your preferred order, switch individual sources off, or turn online lookup off entirely.
  • Choose whether synced lyrics win over your source order, and whether plain-text lyrics are allowed.
  • Lyrics in the player and in downloads follow these choices; lyrics saved next to your music files still come first.

Crossfade and playback

  • Fixed Next and Previous doing nothing, and playback getting stuck, when crossfade was enabled.
  • Fixed crossfade and AutoMix not working on Bluetooth headphones, speakers and other higher-latency outputs, where transitions were silently abandoned.
  • Fixed a song restarting from the beginning, at full volume, at the end of a long crossfade.
  • Fixed rare cases where a track could continue silently after a skip.
  • Skipping, replacing the queue and playing a duplicate track are now handled correctly while a crossfade or stream resolution is still in flight.
  • Switching between music and video mode no longer throws away what was playing. It pauses instead, keeps the mini player, and switching back picks up where you left off. Shorts still close.
  • Music no longer resumes on its own after another app finished using the speaker when you had already stopped it.
  • Koda releases audio focus once playback stops.
  • Fixed Koda crashing on launch on some phones, including after moving to a new phone with a manufacturer's transfer tool.
  • Koda starts slightly faster when Last.fm is turned off.

Artist pages

  • The artist page has a new look: the artist's photo fills the top of the screen with their name set large on it.
  • Artist pages lead with popular songs, followed by Albums, Singles & EPs, playlists they are featured on, similar artists and a biography.
  • See all opens the full song list, which can be sorted by suggested, A-Z, album or longest, and filtered by name.
  • Artist pages have a Releases shelf that tells albums, EPs and singles apart, shows the release year and lists newest first.
  • Artists opened from Search now show similar artists and featured playlists too.
  • Songs now show the right album instead of a second artist's name, in search, playlists and the queue.
  • Albums and EPs show their type and year on the album page, in search results and on saved playlist cards, and different editions of a same-titled release open the correct one.
  • Song menus and the player's menu now offer Go to album for YouTube Music songs.
  • Going back from an artist or album opened from the player or a song's menu returns you to the screen you were on, without reopening the player. Playlists opened from Spotlight or a shared link go back to where you were too.

Playlists and albums

  • Playlist and album pages now open on the cover, edge to edge, and take their color from it. Album Art Colors now covers these pages as well as the player.
  • Play all and Shuffle sit right under the artwork, with Save and Download beneath them. The floating play button appears once you scroll past the header or while searching within the list.
  • Start radio is now also in the album and playlist overflow menu.
  • Creating a playlist is now a full screen, with suggestions, a live cover preview and a cover picker.
  • Added "Add from your playlists" to copy songs into a local playlist from any playlist or Liked Songs.
  • Playlists without cover art get a generated geometric cover in one color with a single accent, instead of a large initial letter.
  • Songs in a playlist can be swiped for a quick action, with each direction chosen under Settings > Local library: off, remove, play, queue or the options sheet. By default, swiping right plays and swiping left removes where the playlist can be edited.
  • Fixed music playlists silently stopping when a page failed to load.
  • Playlist reordering now works for songs beyond the first page.
  • Fixed a channel's "Open music artist page" link and shared playlist links landing on Home when the app was in the other mode.

Home, search and library

  • Spotlight's For you tab now suggests albums, artists and playlists under the songs. Anything already in your library, hidden playlists and blocked artists are kept off those shelves.
  • Switching between search filters no longer re-runs the search; results are kept for a few minutes.
  • Added a setting to stop showing recent searches under the search bar.
  • The search field is now a flat pill that highlights when focused.
  • The Library's All tab shows its Downloads, offline and history shortcuts as one grouped card.
  • History-paused mode now shows as a small badge on your profile picture in both music and video mode.
  • Albums whose names differ only in capitalization are grouped together, and compilations are credited to Various Artists.
  • Songs with missing tags consistently show Unknown Artist, Unknown Album or the file name instead of "". A band actually called something like Unknown Mortal Orchestra is no longer mistaken for a missing tag.
  • Fixed every song appearing twice, with doubled artist and album counts, when using the manual folder scan. Excluding a folder now works with the manual scan too.
  • Songs that some phones list twice internally no longer show up twice.
  • The bottom section of the music Home no longer fades in late when you scroll to it.
  • Removed the broken My Supermix entry from the music Library.

Video player

  • Opening and minimizing a video now uses the same card animation as the music player, and the video keeps playing all the way into the mini bar without a thumbnail flash.
  • Opening and minimizing a video end with one light haptic tick when the player lands.
  • The video mini bar no longer sits on top of the full-screen music player after switching modes.
  • Pinch a fullscreen video to crop it to fill the screen, and pinch in to go back. A Zoom to fill switch is also in the video player's settings. Videos that would lose too much of the picture are left uncropped.
  • Like, Save, Share and Download now sit in one bar under the video title that stays visible while scrolling. The like button fills in when a video is liked, and comments share a card with the description.
  • The playback speed you pick for a video now carries over to the next video. Live streams still play at normal speed.
  • Added a setting to stop showing related videos under a playing video. Playlist queues are unaffected.
  • Added 240p to the video quality options for Wi-Fi, mobile data and downloads.
  • Fixed watch history stopping partway through a video.

Live streams

  • Live streams now list every available quality, for example 1080p down to 144p, instead of only Auto.
  • Your default video quality setting now applies when a live stream starts, and picking a quality on a vertical or 60fps broadcast plays exactly that quality.
  • Live videos show LIVE while playing at the live edge, and show how far behind live you are once you scrub back, including in fullscreen and vertical broadcasts.
  • Fixed live streams stalling shortly after they were opened, while seeking back still worked.
  • A live broadcast no longer fills the video cache as you watch it.

Video Library, history and Subscriptions

  • The video Library now opens on four big destinations: Watch Later, Liked videos, History and On this device, with Downloads right below. Playlists list as plain rows under numbered History and Playlists chapters.
  • Fixed the app crashing when opening the video Library on accounts with a long watch history.
  • Watch history, Watch Later, Liked videos and other video playlists now load more as you scroll to the bottom, with a retry button if a page fails to load.
  • The video Library no longer shows video and playlist counts, which could be wrong for partly loaded lists.
  • Watched videos now show a progress bar on their thumbnails, kept separately from resume points.
  • Fixed thumbnails for videos on your device spinning forever in the video Library's history and playlist rows.
  • The Subscriptions feed now remembers your time filter and sort order instead of resetting whenever you leave the tab.
  • Added a Hide watched chip to the Subscriptions feed, and long-pressing a video offers Mark as watched or Mark as unwatched.
  • Sorted video searches keep their selected order when scrolling or switching sorts.

Video Home and Shorts

  • With video recommendations turned off, Home now shows the latest uploads from channels you follow instead of an empty feed, and the empty state tells you whether you follow nobody or your channels have nothing new.
  • Added Compact video home under Settings > Content and feeds, with smaller thumbnails beside titles and channels.
  • Video Home shows your downloaded videos when the feed cannot load. Pull to refresh brings the online feed back once it is reachable.
  • Shorts recommendations on Video Home now follow your signed-in account instead of falling back to search results.
  • Added a refresh button to the Shorts shelf, with loading, empty and error states.
  • Swiping through Shorts starts faster, with the next few clips buffered ahead of time.
  • Fixed the Shorts feed sometimes ending early after a network error, and old results appearing after switching accounts.

Downloads, storage and backup

  • Added scheduled backups: choose a folder, a frequency and how many backups to keep, and Koda writes one automatically. Older backups are pruned once a new one is written.
  • Scheduled backups can be limited to when charging, idle or on unmetered Wi-Fi, and "Back up now to folder" writes one immediately.
  • Koda notifies you if the backup folder is deleted or its permission is revoked, so a schedule cannot fail quietly.
  • Downloads can be paused and resumed, carrying on from what was already transferred.
  • Downloading a playlist now keeps the playlist itself, so Downloads lists it by name with its artwork and track count. Tapping it expands the tracks in place.
  • Downloaded playlists open and play with no connection and in Local Only mode, and one whose files were all deleted says so.
  • Settings > Storage and cache now has separate switches for caching music, video and Shorts, plus one for preloading. Turning caching off keeps what is already stored readable, and the video and Shorts caches can be cleared separately.
  • The music cache size is now a slider that goes up to 10 GB, and warns what a large cache can take from device storage.
  • The video Library has a Downloaded content entry that opens Downloads on the Videos tab.

App icons and widgets

  • Added nine app icons to choose from under Settings > Appearance > App icon.
  • An icon studio lets you mix the icon's colors and shape and save your own styles by name. Saved styles are included in backups.
  • Android cannot use custom colors as a launcher icon, so applying one puts the closest preset on your home screen and says which; your style is used for Koda's mark inside the app.
  • Choosing a preset previews it, and a single Apply button commits it, so browsing no longer changes your home screen icon on every tap.
  • Fixed home screen widgets not working on HyperOS, MIUI and other OEM launchers, and widgets frozen after the system killed Koda now recover on their own.
  • The Bloom widget now sits directly on your wallpaper with no card behind it, and gained a next button.
  • The widget previews in the widget picker were redrawn, and the Bloom preview now shows its real scalloped shape.

Appearance and settings

  • Preset color palettes now tint the whole app, including cards, sheets and backgrounds, instead of only buttons and accents.
  • Added Palette style under Settings > Appearance > Color palette: Tonal Spot, Vibrant, Expressive, Fruit Salad or Monochrome. Tonal Spot is the default and looks closest to before. Wallpaper colors and AMOLED black are unchanged.
  • Touch and hold any setting to see a full explanation of what it does.
  • Home style and navigation style now show a preview of each option.
  • Appearance is regrouped into Display, Home and navigation, and Touch feedback, and Haptics moved there from Playback.
  • Fixed an opaque bar behind the status bar on HyperOS, MIUI and similar skins.
  • The voice search button no longer disappears in the Black and White themes.

Downloads

  • app-arm64-v8a-release.apk for most modern phones. This is the one you probably want.
  • app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk for older 32-bit devices.
  • app-universal-release.apk if you are unsure; it works on any supported device.
