Support installing LuaRocks packages as mise tools
#14653
Thanks for all your work on mise. I'd like to ask about a use case involving Lua development tools.
The problem
I use mise to manage the tools required by my Lua projects, including the Lua interpreter, language server, formatter, and linter.
For linting, I'd like to use Luacheck, which is distributed through LuaRocks. However, I haven't found a straightforward way to manage LuaRocks packages as mise tools without a separate plugin.
For now, I've created a small custom plugin, mise-luarocks, to handle this. It works for my use case, but I'd prefer to manage Luacheck alongside my other development tools through mise's existing configuration.
Current configuration
Here's an example of how I currently configure my Lua development tools:
The depends = ["lua"] declaration ensures that Lua is installed first, making LuaRocks available for installing Luacheck.
Ideally, I'd like to declare Luacheck alongside my other development tools in mise.toml, without having to maintain a separate plugin.
A question about the best approach
Would there be a recommended way to manage LuaRocks packages through mise without requiring a separate plugin?
I'm primarily interested in the capability rather than a particular configuration syntax or implementation. If there's an existing feature or approach that could support this use case, or if there are design constraints that would make this kind of integration a poor fit for mise, I'd appreciate any guidance.
