CloudBridge 0.5.0

CloudBridge now keeps running after you close its window. It stays in the menu bar, refreshes on a schedule and sends a notification when an alert fires. Cloudflare is a new billing source, with each day's bill split by bucket, Worker, D1 database and Durable Object. Insights compares your bill with a read-only scan of your AWS and Cloudflare resources. And a refresh that fails no longer pays for the same data twice.

Highlights

  • Runs with the window closed (macOS and Windows). Closing the window leaves CloudBridge in the menu bar (the notification area on Windows). The icon shows this month's spend and, when there are any, the number of open alerts. Click it for a panel with month-to-date spend, the month-end forecast, open alerts and the biggest movers. Every 15 minutes it refreshes the accounts that are due, runs the alert rules and sends a notification for each new alert. It still respects the refresh interval, so it makes no more provider requests than a daily Refresh would. Open at login (Settings → Background) starts it in the menu bar after a restart.
  • Cloudflare billing. Add an account ID and an API token with Billing · Read to get spend per service per day. That means a runaway Worker or Durable Object shows up the next day instead of on the month's invoice. Usage within the free allowance is recorded too, at a cost of zero. Pay-as-you-go accounts only.
  • Cloudflare spend by resource. Add Account Analytics · Read to the token and each day's bill is split across the R2 buckets, Workers, D1 databases and Durable Object namespaces that used it, based on each resource's usage that day. The split amounts add up to the bill and are marked as estimates.
  • Insights: what to cut. An optional, read-only resource scan, run by a pinned and checksummed build of our corkscrew fork that is installed only when you ask for it. For AWS it finds stopped instances whose volumes still bill, idle public IPv4 addresses, resources with no owner, and resources that are billed but missing from the scan. For Cloudflare it lists Workers, buckets, databases, KV namespaces, zones and Durable Objects, each with its cost and usage. Results are grouped by type first, with counts and cost; open a type to see its resources, fifty at a time. ⌘0 / Ctrl+0.
  • No paying twice. If a provider answered but CloudBridge failed to save the result, it waits out the refresh interval before fetching again (Force Refresh still retries right away). Accounts that keep failing are retried less and less often, and you get a notification when one stops refreshing. AWS Data Export files that haven't changed are not downloaded again. Cost Explorer months that span several pages are now read in full, up to 20 pages.

Also in this release

  • Service categories mean the same thing on every cloud: ECS, EC2 and Volcengine ECS are all Compute / Virtual Machines, so the Attribution page's Category view compares clouds directly.
  • One failing billing period no longer blocks the other, so this month is still fetched when last month fails.
  • The docs homepage lists every supported cloud and model platform.

Before you upgrade

  • The ledger is upgraded automatically on first launch (schema v5 and v6). If you have SQL that reads model names from service_category, change it to read x_model.
  • Background refresh is on by default and makes the same requests your refresh interval already allowed. You can turn it off, or turn off notifications, in Settings → Background. Open at login is off until you turn it on.
  • Cloudflare permissions: Billing · Read for the bill. Add Account Analytics · Read to split it by resource. To scan Cloudflare in Insights, also add Read on Account Settings, Zone, Workers Scripts, Workers R2 Storage, Workers KV Storage, Queues and D1.
  • Linux has no tray icon, so the app still quits when its window closes. The schedule and notifications run while the window is open.
