@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 06:12

A small update to OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.9

  • The Flatpak updates itself from the game. When a new version is out, UPDATE installs it through Flatpak, as the tarball and Windows versions already update themselves, and the game restarts into it. The first time, your system asks whether OpenPax may update itself. If it cannot, the game says so; update through your software center or flatpak update instead.

  • Updates installed while you play. When your software center (or flatpak update, or apt upgrade) installs a new OpenPax while the game is running, the main menu offers to restart into it.

  • Fixes: the bridge's pointer no longer turns pink when it passes over the star map; in a tall window the Sector Display's build panel no longer repeats its BUILD SHIP button's outline; in a wide window the lamp's message history widens with the top bar and reaches the lamp; a computer player at war no longer crashes the game when a fleet orbits a star itself rather than a planet.

If you installed the Flatpak or the .deb from 0.1.8, this version comes to you through your system's updates. Copies from 0.1.7's packages need this one installed by hand, once.

Everything else is as in 0.1.8; 0.1.0's notes cover what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below.
    • Windows: run OpenPax-0.1.9-win-x64-setup.exe, or unzip OpenPax-0.1.9-win-x64.zip (the whole folder) and run openpax.exe. Windows warns about an unsigned program: click More info, then Run anyway.
    • Linux: any one of these:
      • openpax_0.1.9_amd64.deb: install it with sudo apt install ./openpax_0.1.9_amd64.deb, then start OpenPax from the menu or run openpax. Updates come with your system's updates.
      • OpenPax-0.1.9-linux-x64.flatpak: install it with flatpak install --user OpenPax-0.1.9-linux-x64.flatpak, then start OpenPax from the menu. Updates come through the game, your software center or flatpak update.
      • OpenPax-0.1.9-linux-x64.tar.gz: unpack it and run ./openpax. This one updates itself.
    • macOS (Apple Silicon): OpenPax-0.1.9-osx-arm64.tar.gz. Run ./prepare_mac.sh once from the unpacked folder, then open OpenPax.app.
  2. On first start, point OpenPax at your copy of the game: an installed copy, or GOG's offline backup installer (setup_pax_imperia_2.0.0.12.exe). The small GOG Galaxy installer holds none of the game.
  3. The import converts the game once, into your user folder (a few minutes). Then the game starts.

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.8

  • Lua mods. A mod can now be a Lua script instead of a C# assembly: a main.lua in the mod's folder, nothing to build. Scripts hear the game's events, act every step or every so many ticks, read their own files, keep saved values, and draw from the mod's own random numbers, so a game comes out the same on every machine. Bounty ships in Lua too, as "Bounty (Lua)". See docs/modding/lua.md in the game's folder.
  • Saves across mod changes. A save played with mods that are not turned on does not load until they are. Loading a save tells you which mods were added or updated since, and an updated mod can bring its saved values up to date.
  • Saves show their mods. In the load lists, a save played with mods that are not turned on has an orange warning and cannot be loaded; one whose mods are at another version is marked too, and loads. Rest the pointer on the warning to see which mods.
  • Linux packages update themselves. The .deb and the Flatpak now come with OpenPax's package repositories: install either once, and your system's updates (the software center, flatpak update, or apt upgrade) bring every later version. Copies installed from 0.1.7's packages need this one installed by hand, once.
  • Licenses. A new button at the bottom of the main menu opens the open source and attributions window: every component OpenPax includes or follows, with its license in full.
  • The tall sector panel at 2x. The planet panel's new background filled only a quarter of the panel in large windows; it now fills it at any size.

If you have 0.1.3 or later, the game offers this update itself.

Everything else is as in 0.1.7; 0.1.0's notes cover what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below.
    • Windows: run OpenPax-0.1.8-win-x64-setup.exe, or unzip OpenPax-0.1.8-win-x64.zip (the whole folder) and run openpax.exe. Windows warns about an unsigned program: click More info, then Run anyway.
    • Linux: any one of these:
      • openpax_0.1.8_amd64.deb: install it with sudo apt install ./openpax_0.1.8_amd64.deb, then start OpenPax from the menu or run openpax. Updates come with your system's updates.
      • OpenPax-0.1.8-linux-x64.flatpak: install it with flatpak install --user OpenPax-0.1.8-linux-x64.flatpak (it fetches the freedesktop runtime from Flathub), then start OpenPax from the menu. Updates come through your software center or flatpak update.
      • OpenPax-0.1.8-linux-x64.tar.gz: unpack it and run ./openpax. This one updates itself.
    • macOS (Apple Silicon): OpenPax-0.1.8-osx-arm64.tar.gz.

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 00:32

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.7

  • Linux packages. Besides the tarball, Linux now has a .deb (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint and the like) and a Flatpak (any distribution). Each adds OpenPax to the menu with its icon. These are updated by installing the new package, so the game tells you when one is out but does not update itself.
  • Species selection animates as in the original. Picking another species now closes the open figure and sends it back into its tube before the next one comes out, with each step's sound, and the tubes beside it no longer stay drawn half over the empty spot.
  • Bug fixes in one go. On its first start, OpenPax asks whether to turn on all its fixes to the original game's bugs (ships given to the computer never reaching it, trades of over 21 ships losing some, fast shots missing planets and more). Your answer is kept, and each fix can still be turned on or off in Options, GAME.
  • No public lobby for now. The multiplayer menu offers LAN and Private Lobby only; earlier releases pointed PUBLIC LOBBY at an address that was never a real lobby. Anyone running their own public lobby can name it in config.json, and the choice comes back.
  • The bridge's pointer stays right. After a popup over the bridge closed, the pointer stayed the popup's arrow, which came out pink and striped in the bridge's colors.
  • A sky for the tall sector panel. In a tall window the Sector Display's planet panel used to repeat the same few stars all the way down. It now has its own stars and nebula under the same purple grid, and the metal frame beside it runs smooth instead of in steps.
  • Tooltips on the economy and planet screens. Rest the pointer on a budget line, a planet's figure, CP Subsidy, the plan or the orbitals on the Domestic Policy screen (F5) or a planet's surface (F7) to see what it is for.
  • Volume in the menu's Options. A new SOUND tab has master, music, sound effect and voice volumes. (GAMEPLAY is now GAME, to fit.)
  • The game keeps running in the background. It no longer freezes when its window loses focus. To pause like the original did, turn on Pause while in the background under Options, GAME. Network games never pause.

If you have 0.1.3 or later, the game offers this update itself.

Everything else is as in 0.1.6; 0.1.0's notes cover what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below.
    • Windows: run OpenPax-0.1.7-win-x64-setup.exe, or unzip OpenPax-0.1.7-win-x64.zip (the whole folder) and run openpax.exe. Windows warns about an unsigned program: click More info, then Run anyway.
    • Linux: any one of these:
      • openpax_0.1.7_amd64.deb: install it with sudo apt install ./openpax_0.1.7_amd64.deb, then start OpenPax from the menu or run openpax.
      • OpenPax-0.1.7-linux-x64.flatpak: install it with flatpak install --user OpenPax-0.1.7-linux-x64.flatpak (it fetches the freedesktop runtime from Flathub), then start OpenPax from the menu.
      • OpenPax-0.1.7-linux-x64.tar.gz: unpack it and run ./openpax. This one updates itself.
    • macOS (Apple Silicon): OpenPax-0.1.7-osx-arm64.tar.gz.
The Flatpak can see your Downloads folder and ~/GOG Games directly; for anywhere else, pick the folder or file in the file picker.
  3. The import converts the game once, into your user folder (a few minutes). Then the game starts.

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 19:03

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.6

Simple Combat (the sample mod that fights battles on the map) fights more like the original:

  • Defenses get to shoot first when they outrange you. A fleet attacking a planet first flies in under the defenses' guns, as in the original's battles: if the missile bases or battle stations reach farther than the fleet's own weapons, they fire on it while it closes, and it cannot answer. How long that takes depends on the difference in reach and the fleet's slowest ship.
  • Damage spreads over the fleet. Fire is shared across the ships it falls on, the bigger ones drawing more of it, so a fleet wears down together instead of losing one ship at a time.
  • Battered ships fight worse. Some of each hit lands on a ship's parts, as in the original: weapons, shields, sensors and ECM. Damaged weapons fire weaker and a damaged shield stops less, and the worse off a ship is, the more of its parts get hit.
  • Two new settings in simple-combat.toml: approach_steps_per_round and most_approach_rounds.

If you have 0.1.3 or later, the game offers this update itself.

Everything else is as in 0.1.5; 0.1.0's notes cover what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below and unpack it.
    • Windows: run OpenPax-0.1.6-win-x64-setup.exe, or unzip OpenPax-0.1.6-win-x64.zip (the whole folder) and run openpax.exe. Windows warns about an unsigned program: click More info, then Run anyway.
    • Linux: OpenPax-0.1.6-linux-x64.tar.gz, then run ./openpax.
    • macOS (Apple Silicon): OpenPax-0.1.6-osx-arm64.tar.gz. Run ./prepare_mac.sh once from the unpacked folder, then open OpenPax.app.

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.5

  • A Windows installer. OpenPax-0.1.5-win-x64-setup.exe installs OpenPax for you, with no admin rights needed: a Start menu entry, a desktop shortcut if you want one, and an uninstaller in Windows' Apps list. The zip is still there if you prefer it. The game keeps updating itself either way.
  • OpenPax has its own icon: a gold star in an orbit, on the program, the window, the installer, the shortcuts and the Mac app.
  • Fixed: the update offer's colors. Over the main menu, the update popup came out pink with its buttons missing. It is now its own dialog, drawn the same as Options. (If 0.1.3 or 0.1.4 shows you the broken one, press Enter to update: the hidden button is YES.)
  • The mods list shows what is on at a glance: a green light and green name for each mod turned on, a red light for those off. The same in a hosted lobby room.

If you have 0.1.3 or 0.1.4, the game offers this update itself.

Everything else is as in 0.1.4 and 0.1.3; 0.1.0's notes cover what's in OpenPax.

What's new in 0.1.4

  • Smaller windows keep the game's own shape. In a window under twice the original size (a 1366x768 laptop screen, say), the screens now fill the window in their original 4:3 shape, with starfield beside them, instead of spreading wide and small. From twice the original size up they still widen as before.

If you have 0.1.3, the game offers this update itself the next time it starts.

Everything else is as in 0.1.3: the game updates itself from GitHub, remembers its window, and has a tidier folder; see its notes and 0.1.0's for what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below and unpack it.

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 14:43

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.3

  • OpenPax updates itself. On start it checks GitHub for a newer release. If there is one, the main menu offers it: one click downloads it, checks it against the release's SHA-256, puts it in place and restarts the game. Saves, settings, the imported game and your own mods are kept. Options has a new UPDATES tab: turn the check off, choose whether pre-releases count, or check now.
  • The window remembers where you left it: the same monitor, position and size, maximized if it was, and fullscreen if it was. If that monitor is gone, it opens centered on the main one.
  • A tidier folder: the program is now a single file, with only the graphics, sound and video libraries beside it (and the docs, fonts, mods and tools folders).
  • Simple Combat: missile bases, battle stations and fighter bases now fire as hard and as fast as in the original's battles (half again a ship's power, and faster reloads). Before, a lone missile base barely scratched an attacking fleet. Two new settings in simple-combat.toml, orbital_power and orbital_reload_share, tune it.
  • Fixed: the Options tabs ran past the edge of their panel.
  • This is the last update you install by hand. Unzip it into a new folder and run it: your saves, settings and imported game are in your user folder, so nothing needs copying over. From here on, the game updates itself.
  • Fixed: on Windows, the import opened a console window for each movie it converted (0.1.2).
  • Crash reports (0.1.1): if OpenPax stops unexpectedly, it says why and writes crash.log and openpax.log to your user folder (%APPDATA%\OpenPax\OpenPax\ on Windows).

Everything else is as in 0.1.0, whose notes cover what's in OpenPax.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below and unpack it.

A small update to the first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. OpenPax comes with none of the game: you need your own copy from GOG.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's new in 0.1.1

  • Fixed: the first-run setup crashed when you pressed IMPORT on some machines. The screen could ask for the import's progress before the import had reported any.
  • Crash reports. If OpenPax stops unexpectedly, it now says why in an error box and writes the details to crash.log in your user folder, instead of closing with no word. Everything the game prints goes to openpax.log beside it, including the import's progress. On Windows that folder is %APPDATA%\OpenPax\OpenPax\. Please attach both files when you report a problem.
  • The bundles now carry their version number, so logs say which release they came from.

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 00:53

The first release of OpenPax, an open-source engine for Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. It plays the game on modern Windows, macOS and Linux with no emulator or compatibility layer.

OpenPax comes with none of the game. You need your own copy from GOG; OpenPax imports its art, sound, movies and data on first start.

This is an early release: expect rough edges, and please report what you find.

What's in 0.1.0

  • The full single-player game: galaxy generation, colonies, economy, research, ship design, fleets, combat, diplomacy, espionage and computer players, following the original's rules and numbers. The same seed gives the same galaxy.
  • Native builds for Windows (x64), macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux (x64).
  • Widescreen and high-resolution displays: the game draws sharp at any window size, and nine of its screens use the extra width. The art is upscaled 2x, with a modern font for the interface.
  • Multiplayer over the LAN or online through a lobby, with chat and a ready check, and a self-hostable lobby server (lobby-server/).
  • Optional fixes for the original's bugs. Each is a separate setting, all off by default.
  • Mods: art and data packs, new technologies, ship designs and planet types, and rule changes in C#. A host's mods are sent to the other players in the room automatically. Three sample mods ship with it, off until turned on in Options:
    • Simple Combat: no battle screen. Fleets fight on their own over a few days, weighing firepower, shields, mines, ECM, drones and crew experience, and besiege planets from orbit. The game never stops for a battle.
    • Bounty: credits for every enemy ship your fleets destroy. The modding guide's first example.
    • Arsenal: a new beam weapon, a stronger shield, an orbital farm, crystalline worlds and a premade cruiser, as data only.

Getting started

  1. Download the bundle for your system below and unpack it.

    • Windows: OpenPax-0.1.0-win-x64.zip, then run openpax.exe.
    • Linux: OpenPax-0.1.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, then run ./openpax.
    • macOS (Apple Silicon): OpenPax-0.1.0-osx-arm64.tar.gz. The app is not signed by a known developer, so run ./prepare_mac.sh once from the unpacked folder, then open OpenPax.app.
  2. On first start, point OpenPax at your copy of the game, either:

    • an installed copy (the folder holding Pax Imperia.exe), or
    • GOG's offline backup installer, setup_pax_imperia_2.0.0.12.exe, from your GOG library. OpenPax reads it directly; there is no need to run it.
