Workroom 2.1 — a new terminal engine, and panels that go where you want them

2.1 replaces the engine behind your terminals. A new Rust helper, wr-agent, now owns every session, and each one comes back exactly as you left it — screen, scrollback and full-screen programs included — instead of being replayed from a byte log. Around that are pop-out panels, even splits, a persistent footer, and a long list of fixes.

Before you update, one thing to know: if you later roll back to 2.0.0, every open terminal is replaced by a fresh shell, and updating again will not bring those terminals back. The processes keep running in the background, but the app can no longer reach them. Close anything that matters before downgrading.

Terminals

  • A new session engine. Terminals are owned by wr-agent, a Rust helper bundled inside the app. Updating is seamless: terminals already open under 2.0's helper stay with it until they close, and new ones start on the agent. There's no switch to flip.
  • Reattach restores the real screen. The agent keeps a live copy of each terminal's state, so a reopened pane gets its screen, scrollback, cursor, and the modes it had negotiated (mouse, keyboard protocol, alternate screen) — even for full-screen programs such as editors and agent TUIs, which used to come back blank.
  • Sturdier sessions. A stalled or dead client can no longer stall the shell, resizes reach the running program, a program's exit code is reported back, and closing a terminal also stops everything the shell started.
  • An update can no longer leave a live terminal unreachable.

Panes, panels and windows

  • Pop detail panels out into their own window, and give every panel its own title bar.
  • Open or create a workroom as a split, straight into a new pane.
  • Even splits: adding or removing a pane resizes its siblings evenly along each axis.
  • Dragging the active tab out of the tab strip now splits it.
  • A persistent window footer, with agent usage shown as a logo and per-period bars, and running agents tracked across every window.
  • A setting to turn off dimming for unfocused panes, and the appearance toggle now sits beside the title bar's theme picker.

VCS

  • Each workroom's repository is resolved from what the workroom declares, instead of guessed by probing the disk, for reads, writes and the commit dialog.

Fixes

  • ⌘-clicking a line number now opens that line in VS Code, and terminal text that isn't a link is no longer handed to macOS to open.
  • Closing a tab focuses the tab you were last in.
  • Creating a workroom no longer blanks the window. A failed create's recovery dialog can be dismissed, and a run command can no longer take over the shell of a pane still being created.
  • Menu commands and activity indicators go to the right window.
  • Theme changes apply once rather than once per window, and a large terminal capture no longer hangs the app.
  • Agent usage is restored for persisted sessions and no longer stalls the main thread.
  • The CLI kills a setup script's entire process tree when it stops the script, and the Windows build works again.
